30 Śrī Rāma Sahāyam Pañchāñga (Almanac) Calendar 2019 Panchāngam: Panchāngam provides five basic elements of astrology, Tithi (lunar day or ;me taken by moon to move 12 degrees), vaara (a day from sunrise to sunrise), Nakshtra (the Zodiac constella;on in which the moon is found on par;cular day), yoga (half-day) and karana (angle between sun & moon). These are the main aspects calculated according to the Solar, Lunar and the Earth posi;ons. These five elements play an important role in calcula;ng the muhurthas (auspicious days) for any Hindu rituals. There are three prevalent methods of calcula;on for Panchāngam used in different parts of India. Souramanam (Solar calendar - prevalent in Kerala and Tamilnadu), Chandramanam (lunar Calendar - prevalent in Andhra, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and other states of North India), Baarhaspatyamaana (Jupiterian calendar -which is said to be prevalent in North India). Panchāngam in India and US: The lunar movements calculate Tithi and Nakshtra, the main angas of Panchāngam. When one Tithi or Nakshatram begins and ends, it happens at the same instance all over the world, which is called the Universal 9me. Based on the ;me zones, the Tithi and Nakshatram will begin/end at different local ;mings in different parts of the world. Since India has a livle varia;on in terms of sunrise/sunset, Panchāngam computed for one area of the country is generally applicable to the other parts of the country as well. But when it comes to other parts of the world, same universal ;me should be translated into the corresponding local ;me in terms of the longitude and la;tude. As North America s PST is 13 ½ hours past Indian Standard Time, it is not appropriate to use the calendar, prepared for Indian local ;me. Keeping these aspects in mind, our astrologers and scholars prepared Panchāngam calculated for our local ;me, i.e. PST & PDT. In the current Calendar we have put all efforts to provide as many details as possible. For further details like Muhurthas, please consult our scholars, personally or through . Daily use of this calendar helps everyone to understand and monitor the prevailing planetary forces of the day. Accuracy of the above men;oned Panchāngam avributes depending upon Moon's mo;on are more crucial for the reliability of Panchāngam. Because Moon is the fastest among all the heavenly en;;es shown in tradi;onal Panchāngas, Tithi, Nakshatra, Rasi, Yoga, and Karana depend on Moon's mo;on. There are three popular meanings of the term Panchāngam. Vedic astrology meaning is "five avributes" of the day. The five avributes are: Tithi: Ending Moment (EM) of elonga;on of the Moon, the lunar day, the angular rela;onship between Sun and Moon (True Moon minus True Sun). One Tithi equals 12 degree difference between Moon and Sun. Nakshatra: EM of asterism of the day, that is, the stellar mansion in which Moon is located for an observer on Earth. One Nakshatra equals 13 degrees: 20 minutes. There are 27 Nakshatra in 360 degrees. Rasi: The zodiac signs or rasi - EM of the sidereal sign of the zodiac for the Moon. Tithi: The ;thi is the longitude of the Moon minus that of the Sun. First ;thi (Prathama) begins when ;thi is 0 and ends when it is 12 ; 12 to 24 is dvi;ya, 24 to 36 is Tri;ya etc. 168 to 180 is Poornima, 180 to 192 is Dark fortnight Prathama 192 to 204 is Dvi;ya.etc. 348 to 360 is Amãvãsya. So, there are 30 ;this -15 are called Suddha (Shukla) Paksha (Bright fortnight or waxing phase) the other 15 Bahula (Krishna) Paksha (Dark fortnight or waning phase). The ;thi of a day is usually taken to be the ;thi current at sunrise on that day. Since the moment of the sunrise is not the same at all places it is to be noted that occasionally a ;thi current at sunrise at one place may not be current at sunrise at another place. It is also possible for a par;cular ;thi to be current at sunrise on two successive days. So when two successive days have the same ;thi associated with them, the 1st day is called Tridina. It is also likely that a ;thi may begin aoer sunrise and end before the next sunrise. In such a case a ;thi is skipped over and that day is called AVAMA. The concept of good ;ming is provided by this calendar and one can take advantage of auspicious moments by avoiding when the crea;ve forces of this planetary system are on the wane. Note on the Tithi and Nakshatra ending 9mes: If a ;thi or a nakshatram ends before sunrise on a par;cular day, then it is shown in the calendar with 24 hour format with previous day s ;me. For example, if a ;thi ending ;me is 6:15am and the sunrise on that day is at 6:45am, then it is shown as 30:15 in the calendar. VEDA Temple Commi.ee

36 Śrī Rāma Sahāyam A Message from the Founder, Chairman and Chief Priest of VEDA I am very happy to wish a healthy, prosperous and happy New Year 2019 to all my dear and near devotees of VEDA, in the bay area and rest of the country, with the grace of Almighty Lord Sri Satyanarayana Swamy and blessings from deities at the VEDA temple in Melpeetha Nagaram, which became a Punya Kshetram for entire community in Milpitas, CA. We saw year 2018 was a great year with devotees from nationwide and overseas coming forward to participate in temple activities with great devotion. The VEDA General membership program that we introduced two years ago was very successful with several active members. I request more devotees to register with the VEDA membership program. The details of this program and members roles and benefits can be enquired at temple. Current VEDA priests Jagadish Sharma, Nagendra Sharma, Sivarama Sharma, Mruthyunjaya Sharma, Phani Raja Kumar, Subrahmanya Sarma, Manoj Kumar Sarma, Garimella Avadhani Garu, Pavan Kumar Sharma and Chalapathy Sarma are instrumental to temple s success and growth, who made all important festivals at the temple successful with their team work and meticulous job. This year s Devi Navatri program was fantastic with great alankarams and activities, under the guidance of alankara shikhara Jagadish Sharma Kodamanchili. To fulfill additional demand for services at temple and outdoor priestly services, we added a new Priest in 2018 and plan to add more as necessary based on increasing need for the temple activities. VEDA Community support and Lord Sri Satyanarayana Swamy s blessings will always be there with the local artists and cultural organizations, as the temple became a key platform for local programs like Indian dance performances, singing, language learning, instrumental, spiritual classes, yoga classes, meditation classes, and Veda classes for several years successfully. VEDA Annual calendar provides vital and important details like Tithi, Varam, Nakshatram, Varjyam, Rahukalam, Durmuhurtam, Eclipse timings and star predictions required for us in our day to day personal needs, in a concise manner and for observing our daily rituals. In addition, calendar also provided auspicious days and timings like excellent and average. It is always advised to consult your family priest or astrologer for muhu rthas for important samska ras like weddings, upanayanam, si mantam, gruha pravesam, etc. My vision is always to provide such priest services to the devotees and community through VEDA, with the unique combination of Vedic chants and puja to make devotees happy, prosperous and successful in life. I convey my heartfelt blessings to Dr. Srinivas Vadrevu and family, who helped me with the yearly calendar preparation with dedication. The elections for this year s VEDA Board of directors will be conducted between November and December The new board changes will be effective from Jan 1, 2020 for two years term. We wish to update we secured all the required permits for Maha Shikharam construction from the city. The construction is already going on at the temple now. We plan to conduct Maha Kumbhabhishekam tentatively in April or May this year. Our puranas say!शखरदश&न )च+तन शनम - watching the shikharam to get piece of mind and relieves the devotees of worries. It is not common to witness Mahashikharam construction everyday everywhere. I request all devotees to take this opportunity and participate in the Maha Shikaram construction for this excellent cause. While thanking the devotees for their unwavering effort and support extended so far for this noble cause, we request all devotees to provide similar support in future by donating based on your affordability, so that we can take the temple to this Maha Shikharam construction and Maha Kumbhabhishekam. I express my humble gratitude to the current president Sri Tadepalli Padmanabham garu, office bearers and current VEDA board. I also my humble gratitude to all of the previous members who helped towards VEDA temple to run smoothly and grow. Under his leadership, major works were successfully completed. Also, hard work, commitment and dedication shown by Executive Committee and several new and existing volunteer members are instrumental in tremendous growth of the temple. I pray to Lord Sri Satyanarayana Swamy to give blessings to all the VEDA Community. SHUBHAM BHAVATU ॐ ॐ ॐ SARVE JANĀH SUKHINO BHAVANTU Brahmasri Naga Venkata Sastri Marepalli Founder, Chairman and Chief Priest of VEDA vedapandit@gmail.com, Phone: VEDA Temple Commi.ee

37 Śrī Rāma Sahāyam A Humble Note from the VEDA President Sri Gurubhyo Namah. Dear all, wishing you all a very happy new year. The first year of taking responsibility of the presidency is filled with interesting tasks and a new terrain to walk. With the help and continued support of venkata manadi garu this transition was made as easy as possible. A new Executive team was formed to work with me to execute the administrative operational tasks of the temple, conducting of events and also to improve many processes. Starting with education, this year we saw more classes being conducted including new dance classes in the temple building. We also started providing a platform for music students to come and perform at the temple. This is well supported both by students and their parents too. In this year many of our priests have enrolled to study the entire Yajur vedam under the guidance of Brahamsri Marepalli Naga Venkata sastri garu (our founder and chief priest). The temple vibrates with the sound of the vedic chants and brings peace to anyone entering it. The temple is visited by many scholars, swamijis and Avadhanis who have discourses on various religious text at the temple. In the month of April, additional energy was bestowed to the temple with the consecration of Shanaiswara and Jagadguru Adi Shankara and Sri Ramanujacharya. Both the acharyas were installed on the same platform. This concept of having both the Acharyas was conceived by our Sastri garu. This was well received not only by devotees, but by every visiting scholar and swamijis. They were happy to seem them together. The devotees are now able to offer exclusive tailabhishekam to Shani bhagawan and get their blessings from him. As ever, this year too the festivals of Maha shivaratri, Ugadi, SriRama navami etc., were conducted with support of our priests and volunteers to the satisfaction of the devotees. The Ganesh navaratri celebrations ended with the immersion of Sri Nritya ganapathi in the waters of Pacific Ocean near Richmond bay. All the participants had an ecstatic time. The Devi Navaratri celebrations in October provided a visual and spiritual feast to all devotees with different daily alankarams for the Devi. The increased number of devotees visiting every year speaks for itself. Moreover, devotees came in large numbers during all the days of devi navaratri irrespective of weekday or weekend. The karthika masam which is usually the busiest month of the entire year, has an increased number of participants doing group satyanarayana vratams. Due to extreme demand, additional batches were conducted on karthika ekadasi. With the increased number of devotees, the additional challenge of providing timely prasadam to all is done by our dedicated pachakas and a team of volunteers, which we call 'satya sena'. These volunteers provide timely help to the pachakas and make every best effort to make sure everyone gets mahaprasadam. Similar to the food volunteers, we have a dedicated flower volunteer team who procure flowers and very meticulously make beautiful garlands which the deities are adorned. On the construction front, the temple board has initiated the construction of mahashikaram for Sri Ramaa Satyanarayana Swamy. A diligent process of inviting multiple contractors and choosing one among them took place. The challenging task of coordinating the contractor, structural engineer, architect, city inspectors etc., is taken up by a dedicated volunteer team led by our board member baleshwar garu. The roof's been cut and the shikaram's super structure is being completed. The next steps of getting the art work done by the shilpis is work in progress. Many devotees have generously donated to construct the mahashikaram to make sure it is completed. During the karthika masam, we have also upgraded the flooring on the 479 building by laying wooden floor. This opens up the floor for additional dance classes, comfortable seating for performing private ceremonies or gatherings. On the administration side, the revenue of the temple is very steadily growing. There is a 12% increase in the number of registered devotees within the last 11 months. We have launched VEDA temple App to meet devotees' day to day requirement of information. we got permission from the opposite building to use their additional parking space during nonoffice hours. We have also streamlined many processes behind the scenes which are making operations faster.thanks to the EC team and the Officers bearers team to make this happen. Our objective is to make sure the devotee has a peaceful experience whenever he/she visits the temple. All progress is made possible by the blessings of Sastri garu, the dedicated work by our priests and all volunteers. My final thanks go to my family, who have let me serve the temple and also joined me in many occasions in this seva. Wishing you a happy new year once again.
