OBL Times October The History of Halloween By Krishna Suresh Boo! The History of Halloween is still not clear but people think this is happened hundreds of years ago. People called Celts believed that the souls of the dead people visited the Earth on the last day of October. They honored souls and had a festival and called it Samhain [Halloween]. When the Roman Empire took over the Celts, they took over their ideas of Samhain too! The idea of Samhain from the Roman times is still remembered in the Western countries, then they named it as Allhalowe en [short for the evening before Hallows Day ]. Later on they shortened the name to Halloween. Now people wear costumes on Halloween. They do that to celebrate by going to parties and go trick-or-treating with friends. The reason that the people first wore costumes on Halloween was that Halloween was on the last day of October. The history of Halloween might not be clear but that s how it was first celebrated and that is how it s still celebrated right now. That s the history of Halloween. History of Halloween Costumes By Shrey Mittal The parts we like most about Halloween are costumes and candy. Today we have many options; we can just go to a store and buy a readymade costume of our choice. Years and years ago people didn t have many options. Halloween costumes began from the Celtic festival Samhain. Normal people would disguise themselves in ghoulish costumes because of their belief. The Celts thought on October 1st spirits would roam the Earth causing lots of havoc. Not wanting to be caught in that havoc they tried to blend in with those spirits so they could not recognize them as humans. The first costumes were animal skins and heads. These customs of Halloween so far were changed from religion to religion a couple of times. Those religions basically were kept the same, except it, s names which it was eventually made Halloween. In the 1920,s and 1930,s store bought costumes were first available whereas parents had to sew them before. In those times the prevalent costumes were spooky and ghoulish. In 1960,s and 1950,s costumes were plastic aprons and masks that fit on clothes. Now get ready to pick up your costumes and have fun. October, 2 2oo9 the Walk Started! By: Morgan Mayer On October, 2 we had a wonderful walk. Kids and there parents or friends walked for along time.at the walkathon we made 10,000 dollars for people who donated money to walk. During the time we had games like country line dancing and delicious food like fish flay pizza, and homemade Brownies, cupcakes and cookies. For the whole walk music was playing, and people liked to boogie on the boogie spot.i saw even the PTA parent s and kids were dancing till it was time for everybody to go inside. The walk was really fun I hope you were there to you enjoy the fun too. If you guess you had a fun time you should thank it all to the PTA who made all that just for you,so if you see a PTA member you should know what to do. Christopher Columbus By: Sara Smiley This year Columbus Day was on Monday the 12 th of October. There were 3 ships the Pinta, the Nina, and the Santa Maria. Columbus Day all started because at night the pinta ship first saw land ahead. They started there trip at Spain. There mission was to find land which did happen. Columbus was the captain of the Santa Maria. Can you guess how many men were on all 3 ships? Well there were about 90 men on all the ships. So how many men do you think were on each ship? Well there were 30 on each ship. All of the men were scared to cross the ocean which is really big, but not Christopher. When they reached the island Columbus wanted to take 6 Indians with them on there trip back to Spain. Many sailors stayed behind. When they started sailing again the weather turned bad and now Columbus was afraid to sink also. Maybe they did sink I do not know. Finally they got home on March 15, of1493. It took them 32 weeks to get to America to go back to Spain. The kings and queens of Spain called Columbus a hero! Costume Ideas By: Kishan Patel Pa Are you ready for Halloween this year? If not, let me give you some ideas. Now let s see. All right, if you like scary stuff, you should be a ghost, vampire, witch, or a character from Star Wars. If you like music, you should be a singer. If you like magic, you should be a wizard or again a witch. If you like gardens you should be a troll or a fairy. If you like video games, you could be a video game character like Mario. If you like fairy tales you should be a princess. If you like evil you can be a devil. Well maybe. If you like action you should be a ninja, Batman, Batgirl, or a Ninja Turtle. If you like animals you should be your favorite animal. And if you want to, you could be a skeleton or a sports player from baseball or football. You can also be a goblin or a genie. Also you can be a ketchup or mustard bottle. You can also be a pumpkin if you want to. You can also be a engineer or a artist. Sorry, but this is all the help I can give you so, bye! See you on Halloween!

Fall Festival is Coming Near! By Brennan Heeney As the teachers are planning parties with sweets, children are cheering for fun! Everyone is excited that Halloween is coming near. Some kids are deciding, some kids already know what to wear or to scare on Halloween night. Now this will give you a fright. Last year was a blast of excitement because we walked through the big crowd of parents and walked. Flashes of cameras made us a bit dizzy. Customs of witches, goblins, werewolf s, ghost, devil s and more were seen! Don t worry the excitement isn t over, because the party isn t done! Cookies, treats, candy and more! Yum! Also decorations galore! Last year I was in Mrs. Rash s class she was Dorothy and the rest of the third grade team was characters from the Wizard of Oz! Also for example the first grade team is always M&M s. Now for the first graders who might be scared don t worry Mrs.Lyberger insists not wear to scare, so save it for the night of Halloween to fright! Pumpkin Shortage 09 By Alivia Scott Halloween without pumpkins is like Christmas without trees, Easter without eggs, and the 4 th of July without fireworks. This year it will be hard to find that perfect pumpkin. It s because it rained so much this spring and summer that most pumpkins have rotted on the inside. But you can still find pretty nice pumpkins at the pumpkin patch this fall. When you get a pumpkin you can actually use it in many ways other than just making Jack-o-lanterns. You can use the insides for pumpkin pie, the seeds for growing or you can cook the seeds and eat them. Once you re done with the outside take the stem off and you can put it in the ground, over time it will decompose and that helps the earth. But you don t always have to do that you can put the pumpkin in the recycler. DSTP Advice By: Jasmine Minhas Here is some great advice that the 4th grade teachers gave their students for getting ready for DSTP. First study for the test. The teachers worked extremely hard with their students to prepare them for this test. Also, they said get a good night sleep. Next eat a nutritious breakfast. Then try your best on the test. Don t get nervous it is just a test that wants to see what you know. Also keep your eyes on your own paper or else they will take your test away. Good luck on the DSTP! Page 3

Sports Page The Baseball Playoffs By: Nikhil Mehta People all around the world are excited because the baseball playoffs have started! The playoffs are where some of the best teams play each other to find out the two best teams. Then they play in the World Series to find out the best team. The Philadelphia Phillies won the World Series last year over the Tampa Bay Rays. Right now the Phillies are going to play the Los Angeles Dodgers in the N.L. (National League) Championship Series. Whoever wins will win the National League Pennant. The two teams playing in the A.L. (American League) Championship Series are the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Angels will be playing. That s your playoffs! The Football Season By: Nikhil Mehta Well, the football season has started and the Steelers are back! The Pittsburg Steelers are the defending Super Bowl Champions. They have some competition this year, though. There are a couple of other amazing teams, the Colts and Broncos. They are both undefeated with a record of 6-0. Maybe you re hearing one of the names of the next Super Bowl Champion. There s also a team that s not doing so well-the Titans. They re 0-6, just the opposite of the Colts and Broncos. The Titans had the best record last year, too. They were 13-3. Let s just wait and see who comes out on top this year!

Sarah s First Halloween By: Jourdan Lobban Many years ago in a small town in New Jersey there were a lot of people.they were nice to each other, they helped each other and shared. They also celebrate the holidays (Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc ).But the one holiday they didn t celebrate was Halloween. You want to know why? They say if we celebrate it the creatures of Halloween will rise and destroy human kind. People thought that law would stay. But then two brave girls showed the true meaning of Halloween(me and Sarah). It all started on October 21 st a few days just before Halloween. I was in Sarah s room searching on the web about the history of Halloween(we were getting a lot of info about it). I don t know about this Sarah. What if we get caught? I said shivering. Relax Nicole. Nobody will find out. I have it all covered. She said Oh that reminds me. My name is Nicole Andrews. Ever since me and Sarah met we loved Halloween. But we can t celebrate it (you know why).we can t even research it! I know it s crazy. But that s how the town works. Can t we just do Halloween secretly? Sarah asked for the 1,000,000,000 th time. No we can t. You know I can t keep a party secret. I responded. But that did get me thinking. I always wanted to celebrate this holiday, but nobody will listen to us. Finally after two hours of researching and thinking I got an idea. Sarah I have an idea. Why don t we write a letter to the governor saying we want to do Halloween. I said. But what if he says no? Sarah said. Don t worry. I have it all covered. I replied. So we got paper, a pencil and wrote our letter to Governor Smith. After that my mom took us to the Post office to mail the letter in.then we went back and waited. When it was the day of Halloween (at school) my mom gave me a letter. It said that Governor Smith says that he thought hard and canceled the No Halloween law and will approve Halloween always. I showed it to my parents then called Sarah to tell the good news. That s great. I ll tell the school tomorrow. She said. Okay. I replied. The next day at me and Sarah told the news we got. That s great. But what do we do for decorations and treats? Mrs. Zane said. Don t worry we have them right here. I said. Then we showed them. So we decorated and put the treats in the class. After that we started the party. When it was 3:00 p.m. we cleaned up and went home. That was a ood party. Then Ally said she ll band Halloween again but that s a different story. THE END
