General principles, problems, fundamental laws, and theories. Course content provides a foundation for work in advanced chemistry and related sciences. Science and engineering majors study atomic structure, chemical reactions, thermodynamics, electronic configuration, chemical bonding, molecular structure, gases, states of matter, and properties of solutions. Core Curriculum Course. Note: Only one of CHEM 1305, CHEM 1405, and/or CHEM 1411 can be used toward associate degree natural science requirements. Only one of the three will count as Natural Science core; the others may count as electives in the degree plan. One year of high school Chemistry; Must be placed into college level reading (or take GUST 0342 as a co requisite) and be placed into MATH 0312 (or higher) and be placed into college level writing (or take ENGL 0310/0349 as a co requisite). 1.To provide the student a basic and practical understanding of chemistry (formulas, reactions, and calculations) and recognize its relevance in our daily lives. 2. To prepare our students to meet with success in higher level chemistry and other science courses when they transfer to four year universities. 3. To prepare our students for professional programs requiring a mastery of General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry, such as Nursing, Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy. 4. To make learning more meaningful and application oriented hands on laboratory activities involving taking measurements, observing reactions, evaluating the results and drawing conclusions with the involvement of lab group is done. Course Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) 1. Naming and writing formulas of elements, ions, ionic and molecular compounds. 2. Categorize and write complete balanced equations. 3. Perform chemical calculations involving reaction stoichiometry and energy changes. 4. Relationship between the properties of electromagnetic radiation (frequency, wavelength, and energy) calculation energy changes associated with electronic transitions in an atom. Periodic table and trends in periodic properties of elements. 6. Properties of gases and gas laws. Stoichiometry involving gases in the reactions. Gas mixtures and total and partial pressures of gases, effusion/diffusion of gases and their relationship to molar mass. 7. Chemical bonding with dot structures and valence bond theory and the molecular shapes (geometry) of molecules based on VSEPR and valence bond theory

Power points and hands on lab exercises. Practice work will be assigned and some assignments will be for grade. Graded assignments must be turned in on specified due date in proper format, to get credit. It is strongly recommended to get a note book just for assignments. This will make a great study guide and a reference material whenever you need to look up work. Being organized is very important.

Student Assessment(s) and instructor grading criteria Instructor s Requirements There will be three semester exams. All exams all exam will be two part. Exam 1 and 2 will be part 1 on line and part 2 in class. Exam 3 and final will be in person only. A final grade is assessed at end of semester based on the following. Exam 1 + 2+ 3 + last work sheet. = 50% Home works quizzes = 10% Labs = 20% ( Labs are graded based on four categories :performance of experiment and group participation, prelab, lab report and Post lab) Comprehensive exam at end of the semester. Final = 20% For Lecture and lab : a scientific calculator NO CELL PHONE CALCULATOR OR SHARING WILL BE ALLOWED AT ANY TIME IN LECTURE OR LAB. No cell phone use will be allowed during class time. Please keep it on vibrate and use it in hall way if needed for emergency. Laboratory Policy Lab safety will be reviewed before the first lab. Each student will then sign a statement affirming his or her commitment to following safe procedures in the laboratory, and turn in the signed form. Be especially aware of the need for adequate eye protection and follow proper dress code in the laboratory. Safety goggles must be worn at all times during the laboratory period. No food or drinks are allowed in the lab. Open toed shoes and / or shorts should not be worn in the lab. Do not leave lab while doing lab for extended period of time. Be on time. You will work in lab in a group. Once your group has started the work if you show up late you may miss the quiz at the beginning of the lab and 10 points will be deducted from that lab grade. Each lab is graded on a 100 point scale. Admission to the lab may be denied for violation of any of these rules Make sure to bring your lab book and any report due on the day of lab. No copies will be accepted. Make sure to leave the station clean for next group. Each student needs to write data in their own lab manual and submit lab report. Show the work prior to leaving the lab.

Exams and Make-up Policy Examinations will consist of three non-cumulative regular exams plus a comprehensive final. Make-ups will not be given. Programmable calculators, such as the TI 83 Plus, are not allowed during exams! All exams will be given for two hours. Remember that the final exam will be comprehensive (meaning that it will cover all of the material from the whole semester, not just the last part). Please note that all students are required to take the final (no student can be exempted). Penalties can include a grade of "0" or "F" on the particular assignment, failure in the course, academic probation, or even dismissal from the college.

Scholastic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating on a test, plagiarism, and collusion. In this class, the penalty for willful cheating on exams is a grade of F in the course. This is the standard policy of the Physical Sciences department at Northwest College. Attendance Policy The HCCS attendance policy is stated as follows: Students are expected to attend classes regularly. Students are responsible for materials covered during their absences, and it is the student's responsibility to consult with instructors for make-up assignments. Class attendance is checked daily by instructors. Although it is the responsibility of the student to drop a course for nonattendance, the instructor has full authority to drop a student for excessive absences. A student may be dropped from a course for excessive absences after the student has accumulated absences in excess of 12.5% of the hours of instruction (including lecture and laboratory time). Note that 12.5% is approximately 4 classes or labs for a 4 semester hour course, such as this one, which meets two times per week in a normal 16 week semester. If circumstances significantly prevent you from attending classes, please inform me. I realize that sometimes circumstances can interfere with school, and I will try to be as accommodating as possible, but be aware of the attendance policy. Policy Regarding Multiple Repeats of a Course NOTICE: Students who repeat a course three or more times may soon face significant tuition/fee increases at HCC and other Texas public colleges and universities. If you are considering course withdrawal because you are not earning passing grades, confer with your instructor/counselor as early as possible about your study habits, reading and writing homework, test-taking skills, attendance, course participation, and opportunities for tutoring or other assistance that might be available. Last Day for Administrative and Student Withdrawals For 16-week Fall 2015 classes, this date is October 30. I urge any student who is contemplating withdrawing from the class to see me first! You may be doing better than you think. Either way, I want to be accessible and supportive. I do not believe in "weed out" classes, and I consider you to be much more than just a name or number!
