June 06 Hello, future Algebra II students: The packet attached to this letter contains a series of problems that will overview the Algebra I skills you must have mastered in order to have a good start in Algebra II. Completing this packet over the summer will help you practice and maintain these skills. I epect that you will work through these as best you can, and that your work will be neat and accurate. This assignment will be collected on the first day of classes, and after spending our first two days reviewing it, you will be tested on the material and that grade will count as your first test grade of quarter one. Therefore, I strongly suggest that you make a photocopy of your packet once it is completed so that you will have a copy of your own from which to study. Bring both copies to class with you on the first day. You must present your work in an organized and systematic way. In this course, the way you arrive at an answer is often more important than the answer that you get. Please be mindful of this when you are working through this packet. If you turn in a paper without sufficient work on problems for which work must be shown, no credit will be given on those problems. Lastly, it is essential that you purchase the appropriate materials for this course: A -ring binder with dividers: Homework, Class Notes, Assessments. A pack of filler paper for the Homework portion of your binder A graphing calculator: a Teas Instruments TI-8, TI-8 Plus, TI-8, or TI-8 Silver Edition. This can be purchased at Staples, Wal-Mart, Amazon, ebay etc. You will need it for this packet as well as for the course. It will be used frequently throughout the year as well as in subsequent math courses. I look forward to meeting you all in the fall, and I hope you look forward to an eciting and interesting learning eperience. Mr. Brown brownr@mersd.org

Prerequisite Algebra skills for Algebra II Honors Directions: All work must be done NEATLY, on separate paper. You are epected to recopy and number each problem, show work clearly, and circle your final answer. Papers will not be accepted unless all of these conditions are met. All graphs must be done on graph paper. (print some from my website if necessary) Questions with the icon indicate that a calculator may not be used. XI. Operations with Linear Systems For #0-08, solve the system of equations by any method. I have provided eamples of each method substitution and elimination to refresh your memory on this skill. Sample : Solve: y 9y I ll use substitution. Replace with y in the second equation: ( y) + 9y = - 6y + 9y = - + y = - - -_ y = -6 y = - Then, replacing y with - in the top equation, we get = (-) = + 6 = 7 Sample : Solve: y 0 y 6 I ll use elimination. Multiply the bottom equation by so that the y s will cancel when the equations are added together. (Note: you could have multiplied the bottom equation through by - to eliminate instead.) y = 0 ( + y = 6) y = 0 + + y = 7 = 7 7_ = 6 Then, replacing with 6 in the top equation (either works), we get (6) y = 0 0 y = 0-0 -0 y = 0 - -_ y = 0 Solve each system using either method: substitution or elimination. SHOW ALL WORK. 0. y 6 y 0. y y 0. y y 0. y y 0. y 0 y 06. 8 7y y 07. 8y y 08. y 80 y 8 09. For each of the problems in #0-08, prove to me that your answers are correct by substituting each into the original equations and verifying that both equations are satisfied.
