eheroes: EC-FP7 funded project, will be introduced by coordinator G.Lapenta. Kickoff at Rome, March 2012, runs for 3 years Regular workshops & meetings: see website! CHARM: BELSPO funded Intra-University Attraction Pole network (IUAP), main theme: Contemporary heliospheric and astrophysical modeling challenges 7 institutes, 5 Belgian + two international partners Kickoff at October 2012, runs for 5 years, coordinator R. Keppens 6 work packages: coupling models, observational validation, plasma turbulence, MHD to kinetic, radiation and dynamics, dissemination Regular workshops & meetings: see website!

CHARM: BELSPO funded Intra-University Attraction Pole network (IUAP), main theme: Contemporary heliospheric and astrophysical modeling challenges 6 work packages: coupling models, observational validation, plasma turbulence, MHD to kinetic, radiation and dynamics, dissemination

CHARM: BELSPO funded Intra-University Attraction Pole network (IUAP), main theme: Contemporary heliospheric and astrophysical modeling challenges 6 work packages: coupling models, observational validation, plasma turbulence, MHD to kinetic, radiation and dynamics, dissemination Current school: Introduction and overview of, plan for today: Info on organizing networks eheroes - CHARM Basic plasma physics theory for space science Additional skills: presentation tips (Dan Seaton)

CHARM: BELSPO funded Intra-University Attraction Pole network (IUAP), main theme: Contemporary heliospheric and astrophysical modeling challenges 6 work packages: coupling models, observational validation, plasma turbulence, MHD to kinetic, radiation and dynamics, dissemination CHARM: one of 47 selected IAP phase VII networks by BELSPO Phase VII selected networks at http://www.belspo.be/iap Interuniversity Attraction Pole spans years 2012-2017 our (new) IAP network officially started 1 October 2012

CHARM: one of 47 selected IAP phase VII networks by BELSPO Phase VII selected networks at http://www.belspo.be/iap Interuniversity Attraction Pole spans years 2012-2017 our (new) IAP network officially started 1 October 2012 IAP grown from 14 networks (Phase I, 1987) to 47 (Phase VII) total budget for phase VII up to 156 million euro impulse to form excellent interuniversity networks in basic research encourage interdisciplinary work, facilitate European/international network participation for Belgian research teams, stimulate collaborations between different institutions and linguistic communities,...

CHARM network: 7 teams, each partner team with spokesman P1 http://wis.kuleuven.be/cmpa Centre for mathematical Plasma Astrophysics, KU Leuven [Rony Keppens] P2 http://www.astro.ugent.be Sterrenkundig Observatorium UGent [Maarten Baes] P3 http://aqua.ulb.ac.be Fluid and plasma dynamics Research Unit ULB [Bernard Knaepen] P4 http://www.sidc.be Solar physics research department of ROB [David Berghmans] P5 http://www.aeronomie.be Solar Wind research unit of BISA [Viviane Pierrard] INT1 http://www.strw.leidenuniv.nl Computational Astrophysics at Leiden University [Simon Portegies Zwart] INT2 http://icc.dur.ac.uk Institute for Computational Cosmology at University of Durham [Tom Theuns]

CHARM objectives: 1. couple existing tools and models towards more realistic multi-physics descriptions: work package 1, leader Giovanni Lapenta, KU Leuven 2. confront model predictions with measurements: work package 2, leader David Berghmans, ROB 3. gas and plasma dynamics with turbulent fluctuations: work package 3, leader Bernard Knaepen, ULB 4. MHD to kinetic treatments in the heliosphere: work package 4, leader Viviane Pierrard, BISA 5. dynamics with radiatively controlled phenomena: work package 5, leader Maarten Baes, UGent

CHARM research themes, with relevance to this week: Address our most pressing questions in space plasmas, where the presence of charged constituents requires to recognize fully the interplay between global magnetohydrodynamic and phase-space based kinetic physics. modern high performance computing approaches confront models with observations

Plan for this week: Stefaan Poedts Giovanni Lapenta Today: Intro to theory for space weather Rony Keppens

Additional skills and hands-on parts: Monday 17.30-18.00: tips for scientific presentations 18.00-19.00: welcome reception Tuesday afternoon: Scientific proposal writing (with Caroline Greenman) Starts from home-made proposals, first feedback on language and science aspects, then time to improve selected ideas in pairs Ultimately peer-reviewed, and award ceremony at end of the school! Examples from (succesfull) proposals: eheroes & CHARM
