Central Maine Community College Auburn, Maine 04210-6498 Course Syllabus: Introduction to General Biology Instructor Lloyd Crocker Life Science Bio 101-02 Lecture JAL 203 Spring 2018 Course Description: An introduction to the chemical and physical nature of biological processes intended for students who do not plan to major in biological science. Cell structure, metabolism, reproduction, inheritance, and evolution are examined in lecture and laboratory using a wide variety of plants and animals as examples and experimental models. Prerequisite: high school biology with lab. Co-requisite: BIO 102 Course Specifications: 1. Total hours scheduled for class meeting 45 2. Estimated hours required for outside work (reading Research, etc. varies according to each students needs 90 Total Estimated Hours of Student Effort 135 Credit hours assigned to this course: 3 Student Objectives: After completing this course, the student will be able to: 1. Define the organization of living organisms on Earth, including taxonomy 2. Describe the chemical basis of life with a basic understanding of the periodic table and the importance of water. 3. Define the structure and function of Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic cells. 4. Describe cellular energy use and metabolism including photosynthesis and cellular respiration. 5. List the basics of the cell cycle, mitosis and meiosis. 6. Explain patterns of inheritance using Mendelian genetic concepts, as well as incomplete dominance, multiple allele, and polygenic inheritance. 7. Describe DNA and RNA structure and function, protein synthesis, DNA technology, and genetic counseling. 8. Explain the structure and general biology of viruses, viroid, and prions. 9. Explain how populations evolve. 10. Identify the diversity of ecosystems, their composition, and relevant environmental issues. There are no make-up tests or quizzes unless you have an excused absence 2. An excused absence requires a verifiable emergency. An email (lcrocker@cmcc.edu) must be left for me within 24 hours of the quizzes or a lecture exam 3. After 2 absences from lecture class, a 1 point deduction from attendance and participation may result for every subsequent absence

4. Make-up exams must be scheduled before the next class meeting 5. Repeated missed tests will result in a grade reduction 6.
