6. State and prove the Heine-Borel theorem. You may (and should) use the following fact. Fact: If B R is a nonempty bounded set, then B has a least upper bound. In other words there is a number L > so that L b for all b B (this just says that L is an upper bound for b) and such that if M is any other upper bound for B, then L M (this just says that L is any other upper bound). The statement is simple. If [a, b] R is a closed interval, then [a, b] is compact. We prove it as follows. Let {U i } i I be an open cover of [a, b]. We let B denote the set of elements x [a, b] such that [a, x] has a finite cover by open sets among the U i. Note that a is in at least one U j, and so there is an x > a in the same U j with [a, x] U j (since each U i is open). Thus the set B must contain that x since [a, x] has a finite subcover, namely just one open set U i. Hence B is not empty. By the fact, B has a least upper bound, call it y. By definition, for each x < y, we see that [a, x] has a finite subcover by the U i s, this uses the fact that y is the least upper bound of B. Suppose that f : R n R m is a continuous function. Prove that if W R n is a compact set, then f(w ) R m is also compact. Hint: Let {U i } be an open cover of f(w ) (presumably there are infinitely many U i ). You need to prove that there is a finite subcover of the U i s. This is quite easy, let {U i } i I be a cover of f(w ). Then we claim that {f (U i )} i I form an open cover for W. Indeed, each f (U i ) is open by a previous assignment and so we just need to show they cover W. Choose w W, then f(w) f(w ) and so f(w) U j for some j. But then w f (U j ). This shows that each w W is in at least one {f (U i )} i I which shows that those sets form an open cover of W. Since W is compact, we have a finite subcover {f (U ),..., f (U k )}. We claim that {U,..., U k } also form a finite subcover of f(w ). Indeed, choose y f(w ). Since everything in f(w ) is the image of something in W, we see that y = f(x) for some x W.
