THE PRESIDENT Ronald Mason, Jr. THIS IS JACKSON STATE Ronald Mason Jr. assumed the presidency of Jackson State University on February 1, 2000. He is Chief Executive Officer of Mississippi s only urban university based in the largest metropolitan area and capital city of the state. Mason brought to the University a wealth of experience in higher education, community development and law. At the time of his appointment by the Board of Trustees, State Institutions of Higher Learning, Mason was serving as Executive Director of the Tulane-Xavier National Center for the Urban Community in New Orleans, La. As founder and executive director of the Tulane-Xavier Center, Mason coordinated the two universities extensive programs in public housing, economic development and public education. These initiatives grew from his 1996 appointment by former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Henry Cisneros as Executive Monitor for the Housing Authority of New Orleans. In this unique capacity, Mason was assigned the additional responsibility by Tulane to oversee the recovery of the housing authority, including the involvement of Tulane and Xavier faculty, students and staff in developing model programs to stimulate resident self-sufficiency and Affiliates Program and the Tulane Institute for Resident Initiatives. The campus affiliates program was funded through a $10 million grant obtained by Mason from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Other programs developed in the Tulane-Xavier Center included a Ford Foundation public school reform planning initiative, and Annie E. Casey neighborhood development and family strengthening initiative, and welfare-to-work initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Labor. During his 18-year tenure at Tulane, Mason served in a myriad of capacities including Senior Vice President and General Counsel, and Vice President for Finance and Operations. As chief legal officer, he was the principal legal advisor to the President, senior officers, deans, and Boards of Administrators of the Tulane Educational Fund. Mason s public service activities include membership on the following boards and committees: the National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity of the U.S. Department of Education, the President s Advisory Committee of the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, the American Council on Education Board of Directors, the First American Community Development Corporation Board and the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund Board of Directors. Mason is the recipient of the Mayors Medal of Honor from the City of New Orleans and the Martin Luther King Lifetime Achievement Award from Dillard-Loyola-Tulane and Xavier Universities. Jackson State University has enjoyed tremendous growth under Mason s leadership. The University, which has seen a 28-percent increase in enrollment, has garnered several unique national rankings among other four-year colleges and universities throughout the country. With all of its academic programs accredited regionally or nationally, JSU s academic enterprise is one of the leading producers of African-Americans earning degrees at all levels. The high research activity university leads all HBCUs in federally-generated dollars. JSU also ranks amongst the nation s top in the producers of African-American Ph.D.s in all disciplines. THIS IS JACKSON STATE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Robert Braddy THIS IS JACKSON STATE 2007 JACKSON STATE TIGERS OPPONENTS Robert Braddy is entering his second year as Jackson State s director of athletics. President Ronald Mason, Jr. named Braddy to the position on February 3, 2006. Braddy has established a long and impressive career at Jackson State University. In 1973, T.B. Ellis, JSU s director of athletics, invited Braddy to join the department as the first full-time head baseball coach. Braddy s first conference title came during his first season. His team won back-to-back titles in 1977 and 1978, and again in 1989 and 1990. He also won three consecutive SWAC titles from 1993-95. His other league championships came in 1980, 1982, 1986 and 2000. Braddy is the winningest baseball coach in SWAC history. Between 1973 and 2001, his teams won 12 SWAC championships, more than any other coach in league history. He guided the Tigers to three NCAA tournament appearances, two NCAA play-in games and four NAIA tournaments. Braddy was named SWAC Coach-of-the-Year nine times. A 1964 JSU graduate, Braddy also served as the University s interim director of athletics in 2000. In 2003, Braddy became the first African-American to be inducted into the American Baseball College Association Hall of Fame. Since Braddy s first season at JSU, 52 of his players have reached the professional ranks, including Dennis Oil Can Boyd, Marvin Freeman, Wes Chamberlain, David Clark and Curtis Ford. He produced two first round draft choices in outfielder Clark (1983) and pitcher/outfielder Earl Sanders (1986). Braddy finished his JSU coaching career with an 824-546 record. His 1978 team won 52 games while losing 12, which is a university and conference record. The 1982 Tigers baseball team was the first to represent the SWAC in the NCAA playoffs. Braddy was named NAIA District 30 Coach of the Year twice and SWAC Coach of the Year nine times. He was inducted into the JSU Hall of Fame in 1985. He also played baseball for the JSU Tigers under coach Joe Gilliam, Sr. and was named to the 1962-63 All-Conference SWAC teams. Before joining the Tiger athletics staff, Braddy coached at McLaurin High in Florence where his team compiled a 64-14 record and won the Highland Conference championship four of the six years he coached. He spent one year as Florence High s coach. Braddy and his wife, Diane, have two children: Robert, Jr. and Artimese Anita. 6 2 0 0 7-0 8 J A C K S O N S T A T E U N I V E R S I T Y M E N S B A S K E T B A L L M E D I A G U I D E

2007 jackson state tigers 2007-08 Season Preview... Coaching Staff... 2007 Roster... Players... 8 9-10 11 12-15 THIS IS JACKSON STATE 2007 JACKSON STATE TIGERS OPPONENTS

2007 JACKSON STATE TIGERS 2007-08 SEASON PREVIEW THIS IS JACKSON STATE 2007 JACKSON STATE TIGERS OPPONENTS Head coach Tevester Anderson made Jackson State University basketball fans a promise four years ago and he delivered last March. His Tigers won JSU s first Southwestern Athletic Conference championship in seven years last season, as well as making it back to the NCAA Tournament. JSU finished 2006-07 with its first 20-plus win season since the 1992-93 season. As the defending conference tournament champs Anderson and his 2007-08 Tigers have a bull s eye squarely on their backs. And everyone from the SWAC is taking aim at what seems to be a weakened JSU squad. In 2007-08 the Tigers will be without the services of Trey Johnson, the nation s second leading scorer at 27.1 points last season. JSU also lost an outstanding perimeter defender in Julius Young, who averaged 8.7 points. Despite having to find someone to fill the void left by Johnson and Young coach Anderson is optimistic about defending the SWAC title. JSU returns three starters and six lettermen from last season s championship team. We should be competitive this season despite losing super players like Trey Johnson and Julius Young, said Anderson. Last year we had young guys who came on strong at the end of the year. RETURNING PLAYERS Anderson expects Catraiva Givens (5 8, senior), Edwin Jarrow (6 6, senior), Jeremy Caldwell (6 8, junior), Grant Maxey (6 7, sophomore) and Darrion Griffin (6 3, junior) to all play important roles this season. Although Johnson got much of the glory, and deservedly so, Givens, Jarrow, Caldwell, Maxey and Griffin all made significant contributions last season. Givens served as the Tigers floor general last year, dishing out 4.1 assists/game. He also played a presence on defense as he led the team in steals with 57. Lil Trai has matured a lot on and off the court. He has worked hard and he should be a better player for us this season. Givens will be expected to be a shoulder more responsibility for the Tigers. Offensively the will be expected to help carry the scoring load left by Trey Johnson. Over the summer Givens worked as hard on his game as anyone on the team. He should be a much more reliable threat from the perimeter, as well as spreading the ball around more. Defensively he is one of the Tigers best perimeter defenders. He should be a leader in the SWAC in steals. Jarrow only averaged 1.7 points last season, but he did a lot of the dirty work. He grabbed key rebounds, hustled for lose balls and made the occasional big basket. Defensively he was one of the Tigers better defenders last season. He is also expected to provide on-the-court leadership. Caldwell should be JSU s starting post player. Despite suffering from injuries for most of the 06-07 campaign he finished as JSU s fourth leading scorer (7.0 ppg) and the teams fourth leading rebounder (5.0 rpg). Caldwell will be a real scoring option for Jackson State around the basket area. Maxey emerged as a potential star coming down the stretch last season. He finished as the second leading scorer (8.9 ppg) and the leading rebounder (5.7 rpg). He has good leaping ability and along with Caldwell should be a solid scorer for the Tigers. As a freshman Maxey shot 50 percent from the floor, making 122 of his 244 field goal attempts. Griffin made timely baskets last season and served as a good wing defender. He is one of Jackson State s better perimeter offensive players. Griffin s outside shooting should help open the painted area for JSU s inside game. Despite taking most of his shots from 15 feet and beyond Griffin led the team in field goal percentage, with a 50.9 shooting percentage. Anderson believes that this year s team will be the best shooting team he has had since coming to Jackson State. We have some young guys who can really shoot. Phillip Lockhart (5 11, senior), who played some at the point last year, will probably switch to shooting guard. Garrison Johnson (6 6, sophomore) will also get significant playing time at the forward position. Johnson showed good athleticism and some scoring ability in limited time as a freshman. He shot 42 percent from the field and led the team in free throw shooting percentage (79.2). JSU should also have more depth in the frontcourt. Stanley Turner (6 11, senior) has slimmed down and this should help him avoid the injury bug this season. Last season he played in only 18 games and averaged only 7.1 minutes. This season he should be a reliable back up for Caldwell. Marcus Jones (6 8, junior) should also see key minutes. NEWCOMERS Anderson took to the recruiting trail with specific goals in mind. He set out to find more athletic players. The JSU coaching staff found outstanding talent from both the high school and junior college ranks. Christopher Hyche (6 5, freshman), De Suan Dixon (6 3, freshman), Deshawn Ford (6 7, junior), and Brandon Baker (7 0, freshman) all should make significant contributions this season. Hyche was an outstanding talent at Provine High School (Jackson, MS). He is an explosive leaper and is a decent outside shooter. Dixon was an excellent shooter while at Leland High School (Leland, MS). Ford, another good outside shooter should also be a good defender for Anderson s Tigers. The junior from Columbus State Community College is also expected to be another team leader. Baker a raw talent from Opelika High School (Opelika, AL) will be a project offensively, at the collegiate level, but should be a defensive presence simply because of his height and wing span. SCHEDULE Jackson State s 2007-08 schedule will be just as challenging as last season s schedule. The goal, as always, is to play a tough schedule in preparation for Southwestern Athletic Conference competition. JSU has a tough pre-swac schedule, facing Baylor, BYU, Louisville and California. These non-conference games should prepare the young Tigers in their title defense. JSU will open SWAC play on Jan. 5 against Alabama A&M at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center on the JSU campus. In the final home game of the season Jackson State will face Arkansas-Pine Bluff on March 3. 8 2 0 0 7-0 8 J A C K S O N S T A T E U N I V E R S I T Y M E N S B A S K E T B A L L M E D I A G U I D E

The Tigers have shown consistent improvement during Anderson s tenure and captured the 2007 Southwestern Athletic Conference Men s Basketball Tournament Championship, the program s first since Andy Stoglin s Tigers won in 2000. Under Anderson s guidance the Tigers received the SWACs birth to the 2007 NCAA Men s Basketball Tournament and put up a good fight against the eventual back-to-back champion Florida Gators. Anderson came to Jackson State from Murray State where he spent five seasons at the helm of the Racers basketball program. During his tenure he accrued an overall record of 103-52 with two Ohio Valley Conference titles and two appearances in the NCAA Tournament. The Canton, Mississippi native graduated from Canton High School before attending Arkansas AM&N University. He received a bachelor s degree in pre-medicine from Arkansas AM&N in 1962. He earned a master of science in biological science from North Carolina A&T State University in 1971. Anderson got his start in coaching at Canton High School where he served as head basketball coach and biology teacher. At Canton from 1962-1971, he had an overall record of 416-98. He later had two stints in the Georgia Public School system before landing a job at Auburn University in 1982. While at Auburn, the program enjoyed a Sweet Sixteen finish in 1985 and an Elite Eight finish in 1986. He spent four seasons under Auburn coach Sonny Smith before moving to another institution in the Southeastern Conference, the University of Georgia. From 1987-1995 Anderson served as associate head coach and chief recruiter for the Bulldogs. During that time, Georgia earned six postseason tournament appearances, including three NCAA berths. In 1995 he was named associate head basketball coach at Murray State University. Again he served as the chief recruiter on a team that slowly became one of the more recognizable mid-major programs in the nation. The team earned two NCAA berths and one trip to the NIT postseason tournament. After three seasons as associate head coach, Anderson was named head coach of the Racer basketball program in 1998. He averaged 20 wins in five seasons at Murray State including two Ohio Valley regular season titles, two OVC championships and two appearances in the NCAA Tournament. He was named Ohio Valley Coach of the Year as he reached 100 victories faster than any other head coach in Murray State history. He has coached several players who had careers in the National Basketball Association, including Charles Barkley (Auburn) and Church Person (Auburn). Anderson is married to the former Joyce Lamb. They have nine children: Tanja, Fernandez, Tevester, Jr., Timothy, Fredric, Adonica, Tiffany, Stephan and Paul. 2007 JACKSON STATE TIGERS THIS IS JACKSON STATE 2007 JACKSON STATE TIGERS OPPONENTS ERIC STROTHERS - A s S I S T A N T C O A C H Eric Strothers enters his fifteenth season of coaching at his alma mater. Strothers is a former All-SWAC performer. He came back to Jackson State after playing two years of professional basketball overseas. Since that time, he has been a mainstay with the Tigers basketball program. As a coach, Strothers duties include recruiting, scouting, managing the student-athlete academic program, supervising study hall, directing the off-season conditioning program and various administrative duties with the team. His primary coaching responsibilities are with the post players. The Vicksburg, Mississippi native graduated from Vicksburg High School and came to Jackson State as a basketball hopeful. Strothers was an All-County football player in high school, but had less than one year of basketball experience as he saw action in only two games his senior year. He was a walk-on player when then-assistant coach Chris Giles (former Tigers associate head coach) discovered the package of tremendous potential Strothers possessed. By the time Strothers left Jackson State, he was a first-team All-SWAC forward who led Jackson State to a regular season conference title; a SWAC tournament title and a chance to play in the NCAA tournament play-in game against Coastal Carolina. He was voted the team s Most Valuable Player his junior and senior seasons and garnered a SWAC Player-of-the-Week and Black Entertainment Television (BET) Player-of-the-Week honors during his senior campaign. His 17.4 points per game average during his senior year put him in the Jackson State 1,000 point Club as he finished his collegiate career with 1,251 total points. Strothers graduated from Jackson State with a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice. He was drafted in the fourth round by the Sioux Falls franchise of the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) and played in the exhibition season for the South Dakota team before deciding to play overseas. Strothers started in the Holland Pro League for a season before playing in Hong Kong where he led his team to second place in division play, the team s best finish. Strothers has a master s degree in Physical Education from Jackson State. He has two children, Eric II and Erica. ERIC STROTHERS - A s S I S T A N T C O A C H Anthony Boone enters his fifth season with Jackson State. A former starter at Ole Miss, Boone went to Murray State after spending one season on Rod Barnes staff at his alma mater. Boone returned to Ole Miss to pursue his master s degree in mathematics, while volunteering his time to the basketball program as a graduate administrative aide. Boone graduated from Ole Miss in 1999 with a degree in chemical engineering. He also enjoyed a stellar playing career. From 1994-98 he played in 94 games, including 79 starts despite undergoing four knee surgeries. He posted career averages of 7.2 points and 4.8 rebounds. During his college career, Boone was a member of Rebel squads that posted a 62-50 record, won consecutive SEC Western Division titles and advanced to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments. As a freshman, Boone was named to the Knoxville News - Sentinel SEC All-Freshman Team. In ceremonies before the 1998 season finale, Boone had his number 41 retired, becoming only the second student-athlete in Ole Miss history to be so honored. He joined former Rebel quarterback Archie Manning with that distinction. A two-time selection to the SEC Academic Honor Roll, Boone was also named to the Academic All- America District VI Team in 1996 and was a member of the Rebel 3.0 Club. Following his senior season, Boone was one of seven finalists for the Chip Hilton Award, which is given annually by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame to a player who demonstrates personal character on and off the court. Off the court, Boone served as president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and M-Club. He was also inducted into the Ole Miss Hall Of Fame, which is the highest honor an Ole Miss student-athlete can achieve. A native of West Helena, Arkansas, and Boone was an all-state athlete and class salutatorian at Central High School. Boone is married to the former Jennifer Curry and they have a daughter named Rebecca. 10 2 0 0 7-0 8 J A C K S O N S T A T E U N I V E R S I T Y M E N S B A S K E T B A L L M E D I A G U I D E
