What did people in the 1300s know about the size and location of important European countries and cities? This map was created using an earlier map that was part of a popular encyclopedia published between 1320 and 1360. It includes several sites important to the Christian religion like Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and the Garden of Eden. England, its territories, and cities with English trading links are also illustrated prominently (and much larger than reality) to demonstrate England s importance in the known world. Source: This map was created for the leader of the Evesham Abbey (church) in 1390. Its creator is unknown, but additions and changes were made 20 years after its creation. The updated map was then republished in 1452 as England s first known patriotic map. 1. Who created this source? 2. When was this source created? 3. What kind of source is it? 4. Is this a primary or secondary source? How do you know?

What did people in the 1500s know about the location, shape, and size of continents? This map is the first to record the rounding of the Cape of Good Hope, the southern-most tip of Africa, by Portuguese explorers in 1488. The map was used to prove that Europeans could reach the riches of India and China by sea. Source: A German cartographer name Henricus Martellus created this map in 1490 while he was living in Florence, Italy. It reflects the latest theories about the world, including the idea that although the world is round, it could be depicted on a flat surface. 1. Who created this source? 2. When was this source created? 3. What kind of source is it? 4. Is this a primary or secondary source? How do you know?

What did people living in the early 1500s know about the location, shape, and size of continents? The map below is the first map to use the name America. On the map, the name America is placed on what is now called South America. The name was given in honor of the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci who explored the New World in 1501-1502. The map is based on a map made in the late 1400s and the new information from Vespucci. This map shows the New World as a separate continent, which until the 1500s was unknown to Europeans. It was the first map to clearly show a separate Western Hemisphere, with the Pacific as a separate ocean. Source: A German cartographer named Martin Waldseemüller created this world map in 1507 as a part of a project in France to document and update new geographic knowledge from the discoveries of the late 1400s and early 1500s. 1. Who created this source? 2. When was this source created? 3. What kind of source is it? 4. Is this a primary or secondary source? How do you know?

Is this a primary or secondary source? SECONDARY SOURCE How do you know? IT WAS CREATED USING AN EARLIER MAP THAT WAS PART OF AN ENCYCLOPEDIA THE MAP WOULD NOT BE A RELIABLE TO DETERMINE WHAT PEOPLE IN THE 1300S KNEW ABOUT THE SIZE AND LOCATION OF IMPORTANT EUROPEAN COUNTRIES AND CITIES. THE BACKGROUND INFORMATION SAYS, ENGLAND [IS] ILLUSTRATED PROMINENTLY (AND MUCH LARGER THAN REALITY) TO DEMONSTRATE ENGLAND S IMPORTANCE IN THE KNOWN WORLD. THE MAPMAKER PURPOSELY DISTORTED THE SIZE OF THE CITIES TO MAKE THEM SEEM MORE IMPORTANT.
