A well-kow result, due to Dirichlet ad later geeralized by de la Vallée-Poussi, epresses a relatioship betwee the sum of fractioal parts ad the Euler-Mascheroi costat. I this paper, we prove a asymptotic relatioship betwee the summatio of the products of fractioal parts with powers of itegers o oe had, ad the values of the Riema zeta fuctio, o the other had. Dirichlet s classical result falls as a particular case of this more geeral theorem.. Backgroud I 849, Dirichlet established a relatioship betwee the Euler-Mascheroi costat γ 0.577 ad the average of fractioal parts. More specifically, writig [ for the itegral (floor part of the umber R ad { [ for its fractioal part, Dirichlet proved that [Pillichshammer, 00, Lagarias, 03: ( γ +O (. This surprisig coectio betwee γ ad the average of fractioal parts was, i tur, used by Dirichlet to prove that the umber of divisors of a iteger is of the order log. The techique itroduced by Dirichlet to prove these results is ofte called the hyperbola method, which is a coutig argumet to the umber of lattice poits that lie beeath a curve [Stopple, 003, Lagarias, 03. The error term i (. is kow to be pessimistic. Fidig the optimal epoet θ > 0 such that: ( γ O( θ+ǫ, for ay ǫ > 0 is kow as the Dirichlet divisor problem, which remais usolved to this date. A well-kow result of Hardy is that θ 4, which is cojectured to be the true aswer to this problem [Lagarias, 03.
FRACTIONAL PARTS AND THEIR RELATIONS TO THE ZETA FUNCTION I 898, de la Vallée-Poussi geeralized (.. He showed that for ay iteger w N: w w { } ( γ +O (. w+ As oted by de la Vallée-Poussi, this result is quite remarkable because the limitig average of the fractioal parts remais uchaged regardless of the arithmetic progressio that oe wishes to use [Lagarias, 03. More recetly, Pillichshammer obtaied a differet geeralizatio of Dirichlet s result. He showed that for ay β > : β β } ( γ /β β +O ( β+, (.3 whereγ /β isafamilyofcostatswhosefirsttermisγ γ [Pillichshammer, 00. I this paper, we look ito a differet lie of geeralizig (.. Specifically, we address the questio of derivig the asymptotic epressios to summatios of the form: f s ( s, (.4 for o-egative itegers s Z +. This is the summatio of the products of fractioal parts ad powers of itegers. Clearly, the case where s 0 reduces to Dirichlet s classical result. Iterestigly, we will show that the asymptotic behavior of this summatio is coected to the values of the Riema zeta fuctio ζ(s, ad we will recover Dirichlet s result i (. as a particular case. More specifically, we prove that: s+ s s ζ(s+ s+ +O ( (.5 The Riema zeta fuctio ζ(s is a fuctio of the comple variable defied i R(s > by the absolutely covergig series: ζ(s s, (.6 ad throughout the comple plae C by aalytic cotiuatio. It is a meromorphic fuctio with a simple pole at s with residue. We coclude this sectio with two classical theorems that we will rely o i our proofs. Theorem (Abel Summatio Formula. FRACTIONAL PARTS AND THEIR RELATIONS TO THE ZETA FUNCTION 3 for some costat C, where B,B 6,B 3 0,... are the Beroulli umbers. These results ca be foud i may places, such as[hardy, 949, Lampret, 00.. Notatio We will use the followig otatio: [ deotes the itegral (floor part of ad { [ deotes the fractioal part. N deotes the set of positive itegers, ofte called the atural umbers; Z + is the set of o-egative itegers; R is the set of real umbers; C is the set of comple umbers. R(s deotes the real part of s C. S deotes the size (cardiality of the set S. 3. The Fractioal Trasform 3.. Overview. The key isight we will employ to derive the asymptotic epasio of the fuctio f s ( i (.4 is that we ca solve this problem idirectly by aswerig a differet questio, first. Specifically, we will be iterested i the followig fuctio: [ Φ s ( s (3. + More geerally, whe: [ Φ( φ(, (3. + we will call Φ( is the fractioal trasform of φ(. The reaso Φ s ( allows us to aswer our origial questio is because: [ Φ s ( s + ( s ( s By epadig the right-had side usig the biomial theorem, we obtai a method of solvig our origial questio. 3.. Prelimeary Results. Net, we preset a few useful lemmas related to the fractioal trasform defied above. Before we do this, we itroduce the followig symbol: { [ ( N : +, } N (3.3 I other words, ( is the set of positive itegers that are less tha, ad for which the iterval [/( +, / cotais, at least, oe iteger. For istace, (5 because the iterval [5/3,5/ cotais the iteger two, whereas 3 / (5 because the iterval [5/3, 5/4 lies strictly betwee the iteger oe ad the iteger two. 6 FRACTIONAL PARTS AND THEIR RELATIONS TO THE ZETA FUNCTION we coclude that: w s w s s +ζ(s+o(w s Alteratively, the error term O(w s i the above epressio ca be derived from the Euler-Maclauri summatio formula i Theorem. Hece: s s s s( s +ζ(s +O( s Fially, we look ito the remaiig term: + s [ + s + + [ + [ + s ( + s s 3 + [ s s (s s s (s+ +s (ζ(s s + s +O(s, (s + s +O( (s + s s + s +O(s, for s. More specifically, we have for u : m ( s u C(u+ s u+ s u+ s u s u Bk + k k s u k+ +O( s u m s u+ s u C(u+ s u+ + s u + k m k ( s u Bk s u k+ +O( s u m, k k for some costat C(u that is idepedet of. Puttig everythig together, we coclude that for s > : [ [ s + which is the statemet of the theorem. s +ζ(s s +O ( s, Theorem 3 is illustrated i Fig. Clearly, this theorem geeralizes Dirichlet s result, as promised earlier, because: { } lim s s ζ(s γ ad the fact that: [ + ( (

Coclusio I this paper, we geeralized Dirichlet s classical result o the coectio betwee the Euler-Mascheroi costat ad the average of fractioal parts. Our theorem reveals that the fractioal parts are, i geeral, coected to the values of the Riema zeta fuctio ζ(s. Hece, all of the values of ζ(s at positive itegers ca be epressed as limitig averages of products of fractioal parts with the powers of positive itegers.
