Earth Science: Second Quarter Grading Rubric Kindergarten of their senses Observation skills are used to note characteristics of our environment on a daily basis. The weather may be sunny one day and cloudy another day. Comparisons of daily weather observations include describing how each observation is similar to or different from a previous observation. K.E.1.1 and/or of their senses with minimal with minimal and/or with minimal of their senses only with only with and/or only with -Does not articulate observations of daily weather of their senses -Does not communicate daily weather written (using grade - Does not communicate similarities and differences in weather conditions over time orally and/or Weather changes from day to day. Weather journals are maintained to describe how the weather changes daily. K.E.1.2 - Maintains a daily weather - Maintains a daily weather with minimal Maintains a daily weather only with -Does not maintain a daily weather journal (using grade Continued 1 of 5

Change is something that happens to many things in the environment to include weather. Change can happen quickly or slowly. By observing daily weather changes, one can infer patterns that occur from season to season. Some weather patterns include sunny days, rainy days, windy or cloudy days, snowy days and stormy days. Weather patterns are associated with each season: winter, spring, summer, and fall (autumn). Seasons occur in a particular order and therefore the weather patterns associated with seasons occur in a particular order. K.E.1.3 Earth Science: Second Quarter Grading Rubric Kindergarten -Identifies weather patterns to a particular season visual - Identifies weather patterns with minimal probing from teacher to a particular season with visual with - Identifies weather patterns only with direct teacher to a particular season only with direct teacher visual only with direct teacher - Does not identify weather patterns based on observations collected in weather journals -Does not associate weather patterns with seasons by identifying weather patterns predominate to a particular season -Does not communicate the order seasons occur (calendar-based) (using grade 2 of 5

Earth Science: Second Quarter Grading Rubric Grade 1 (sun, moon, and stars) understanding Objects in the sky have patterns of movement. Students know the sun is a star that can only be seen in the daytime, but the moon can be seen sometimes at night and sometimes during the day. There are more stars in the sky than anyone can count, but they are not scattered evenly, and they are not all the same in brightness or color. The sun, moon and stars all appear to move slowly across the sky. 1.E.1.1 sky (sun, moon, stars) oral and written language (sun, moon, and stars) with sky (sun, moon, stars) with oral and written language with (sun, moon, and stars) only with sky (sun, moon, stars) only with oral and written language only with - Does not draw pictures of (sun, moon, and stars) -Does not use drawings or visual sky (sun, moon, stars) -Does not communicate observable changes in the relative position of objects in the day and night sky (sun, moon, stars) through oral and written language understanding The moon looks a little different every day but looks the same again about every four weeks. The moon s observable changes follow a pattern. 1.E.1.2 -Observes and draws pictures the appearance over time and written language -Observes and draws pictures the with minimal probing from teacher appearance over time with and written language with Observes and draws pictures the only with direct teacher appearance over time only with and written language only with -Does not draw pictures the -Does not use drawings and visual appearance over time -Does not communicate observed patterns of changes in the moon s appearance through oral and written language 3 of 5

Earth Science: Second Quarter Grading Rubric Grade 2 Light travels from the sun to the earth. Some of this light is reflected back into space, some is absorbed by the land, water, and air. 2.E.1.1 -Summarizes how energy land, air, and water independently with accuracy - Summarizes how energy land, air and water with - Summarizes how energy land, air, and water only with -Does not summarize how energy from the sun serves as a source of light that warms the land, air, and water Numbers are used to describe air temperature, wind speed, and the amount of precipitation that occurs. Wind direction is described using cardinal directions (N, S, E, W) and numbers. Air temperature is measured with a thermometer, wind direction with a windsock or vane, wind speed with an anemometer, and precipitation with a rain gauge. 2.E.1.2 -Accurately summarizes with with with with -Does not summarize weather condition accurately in direction, wind speed, and -Does not summarize weather condition accurately in direction, wind speed, and Continued 4 of 5

Earth Science: Second Quarter Grading Rubric Grade 2 of day understanding Over time, there are patterns that can be observed in the weather and these patterns are influenced by the time of day (cooler morning, warmer afternoon) and the time of year (seasonal changes). 2.E.1.3 of year of day with minimal probing from teacher of year with minimal probing from teacher of day with direct teacher of year with direct teacher -Does not compare weather of day -Does not compare weather of year understanding Manual and electronic weather instruments, sensors, and computers can produce a running record of weather changes that occur over time by collecting and recording data. This collection of data can be analyzed as a basis for predicting weather trends. 2.E.1.4 weather data weather data with minimal weather data with direct teacher -Does not recognize manual and weather data 5 of 5
