SECTION: VOCABULARY SCAVENGER HUNT Five Themes of Geography Directions: Skim The Five Themes of Geography and define the following words. Geography: Absolute Location: Relative Location: Hemisphere: Equator: Prime Meridian: Latitute: Longitude:

Formal Region: Functional Region: Perceptual Region: Linear Distance: Time Distance: Psychological Distance:

SECTION: BUILDING BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE Five Themes of Geography Directions: Read the section The Geographer s Perspective and answer the following questions. What is the word origin of Geography? What does it mean? What is the purpose of the 5 themes of Geography? From what you ve just read, why does your group think geography is important?

Five Themes of Geography - LOCATION Directions: With your group, evaluate whether the following claims are true or false. If the claim is false, re-write it in the space below. If the claim is true leave it alone. Then use the section on Location to find text evidence to create a textbased warrant to support the claim. There is only one type of location. A hemisphere is half the earth. The Prime Meridian has only one name. Latitude helps you find places north to south. Longitude helps you find places east to west. When you compare the location of one place to another, you are using relative location.

Five Themes of Geography - PLACE Directions: With your group, evaluate whether the following claims are true or false. If the claim is false, re-write it in the space below. If the claim is true leave it alone. Then use the section on Place to find text evidence to create a textbased warrant to support the claim. Only the physical features define a place. Cultural characteristics help define place. Humans and animals can change the features of a place. Every place has unique features.

Five Themes of Geography - REGION Directions: With your group, evaluate whether the following claims are true or false. If the claim is false, re-write it in the space below. If the claim is true leave it alone. Then use the section on Region to find text evidence to create a textbased warrant to support the claim. Locations have to be similar to be in the same region. A formal Region is defined by an unlimited number of related characteristics. A functional region is not organized around a central area. Perceptual regions are not related.

Five Themes of Geography - HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION Directions: With your group, evaluate whether the following claims are true or false. If the claim is false, re-write it in the space below. If the claim is true leave it alone. Then use the section on Human-Environment Interaction to find text evidence to create a text-based warrant to support the claim. People respond the same way to similar environments. People learn to use the envrionment to help them. The changes that people make to the environment are good. The changes that people make to the environment are bad.

Five Themes of Geography - MOVEMENT Directions: With your group, evaluate whether the following claims are true or false. If the claim is false, re-write it in the space below. If the claim is true leave it alone. Then use the section on Movement to find text evidence to create a textbased warrant to support the claim. Geographers are not interested in the movement of people and ideas. Linear distance is the way people view distance. Time distance is how far across the earth people, ideas, or products go. Psychological distance is the amount of time it takes a person or product to travel.

A CLAIM AND THREE WARRANTS Five Themes of Geography Directions: Individually, using the information you gathered, create 3 warrants to support this claim: is the most important theme of geography for the survival of humans. 2 1 3 is the most important theme of geography for the survival of humans.
