SOIL EROSION MEASUREMENTS AND CONSERVATION PRACTICES AT PLOT SCALE IN MEDITERRANEAN RANGELAND ENVIROMENTS (SOUTH OF SPAIN) J.F. Martínez-Murillo, P. Hueso-González and J.D. Ruiz-Sinoga. Physical Geography & Land Management Research Group. Institute of Geomorphology & Soils - Physical Geography & Land Management Research Group.. Some of the members: -José D. Ruiz-Sinoga, professor and leader. -Juan F. Martínez-Murillo, senior lecturer. -Paloma Hueso-González, postdoctoral researcher. -Rubén Rojas and María Pedraza, technicians. Main reseach topics: -Assessment of Soil Degradation in rangelands, cultivated lands and burned areas located in climatic gradients. -Soil erosion at different spatio-temporal scales. -Soil conservationpractices. -Landscape, eco-geomorphologic and hydrogeomorphologic mapping. -Effect of Global Change in Mediterranean Landscapes.

STUDIES TO BE PRESENTED NOW: 1) HYDROLOGICAL CONNECTIVITY AND EROSIVE RESPONSE OF HILLSLOPES LOCATED UNDER DIFFERENT CLIMATIC CONDITIONS (CLIMATIC GRADIENT APPROACH). 1) CONSERVATION PRACTICES TO ENHANCE VEGETATION GROWTH AND REDUCE SOIL DEGRADATION AND EROSION.

HYDROLOGICAL CONNECTIVITY AND EROSIVE RESPONSE OF HILLSLOPES LOCATED UNDER DIFFERENT CLIMATIC CONDITIONS (CLIMATIC GRADIENT APPROACH). (HYDROSUR-II PROJECT, FUNDED BY ANDALUSIAN REGIONAL GOVERNMENT) OVERLAND FLOW & SEDIMENTS COLLECTION AT DIFFERENT PLOT SCALE IN ABANDONED AND GRAZED LANDS.

WHAT WAS STUDIED IN THESE FIELD SITES? -Overland flow and sediment yield for 4 years. -Controlling factors: rainfall regime; topography; vegetation patterns & soil properties. -MAIN CONTROLLING FACTOR: SOIL SURFACE CONDITIONS MAIN RESULTS -At patch scale: Position of vegetation within the plot. Rock fragment cover disposition on soil surface. -At hillslope scale: Independently of climate, decreasing in OF from top to bottom-channel section / Unclear trend in case of SY. Connection of mid and bottom-channel section was the most frequent (humid and semiarid Med. climate.) Grazing activity reduces the distance between the semiarid and humid sites from what is expected.

CONSERVATION PRACTICES TO ENHANCE VEGETATION GROWTH AND REDUCE SOIL EROSION. (REME PROJECT, FUNDED BY ANDALUSIAN REGIONAL GOVERNMENT) WHAT WAS STUDIED IN THIS FIELD SITE? MONITORING OF SOIL MOISTURE, OVERLAND FLOW AND SEDIMENT FROM AFFORESTED PLOTS TREATED WITH DIFFERENT SOIL AMENDMENTS (straw and chipped branches of pine, sewage sludge & hydropolimers).

MAIN RESULTS: Effects of treatments on overland flow and sediment yield: Control and Hydropolimer plots: low macroporosity +OF & +SY Hortonian. Straw mulch & Pinus mulch High macro-porosity -OF and +SY Saturation Vegetation growth major in plots ammended with straw and pinus mulch and HP: +soil moisture.

WHAT S COMING NEXT? GLOMED-LAND PROJECT: EFFECT OF GLOBAL CHANGE Subhumid mediterranean climate IN CONTRASTED MEDITERRANEAN LANDSCAPES. FUTURE SCENARIOS. (GLOMED-LAND PROJECT, FUNDED BY THE SPANISH GOVERMENT) Dry and semiarid mediterranean climate PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE LANDSCAPE SCENARIOS: -Gauged catchments & water resources -Hydro-geomorphologic processes -Carbon sequestration and loss -Mitigation and land management.
