IUGS-UNESCO IGCP PROJECTS 546 Subduction Zones of the Caribbean and 574 Bending and Bent Orogens, and Continental Ribbons Workshop Subduction Zones and Bent Orogenic Belts of the Caribbean and Field Trip From arc growth to orocline formation: The record from the Panama Canal and East Panama February 8-11, 2010, Panamá Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute Convened by Camilo Montes (Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Ancon, Panama. Email: montesc@si.edu) Agustín Cardona (Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Ancon, Panama. Email: cardonaa@si.edu) Antonio García-Casco (Univ. Granada, Spain. Email: agcasco@ugr.es) Stephen T. Johnston (Univ. Victoria, Canada. Email: stj@uvic.ca)

IGCP 546-574 Workshop and Field Trip in Panamá Presentation During the last year, a wealth of new data has been collected in Panamá, including new radiometric ages, paleomagnetic investigations, geochemical analyses and field mapping. During this workshop and field trip, we will place all of this information in a regional context where the trailing edge of the Caribbean Plate enjoyed multiple episodes of arc magmatism and deformation. The field trip will concentrate on East Panamá (San Blas range) and the Canal basin, with stops and transects to observe the pre-tertiary basement to the Miocene cover rocks. We hope this meeting will provide an opportunity to discuss the evolution of the Isthmus and its place in the subduction zones of the Caribbean and the development of oroclinal belts. Mamoní river

IGCP 546-574 General Information Weather in Panamá during the month of February is hot and dry. Expect temperatures around 33 C (90 F), and no rain. Bring sunblock, hat and bug repellent. Most of the stops will be near highways and roads with little hiking needed, but at least one day may require either trekking along the river bed or water level permitting white-water rafting!. We will keep you posted, as river access depends on the water levels. Please let us know of any special access requirements or requests. The official hotel is the El Panama Hotel (Via España y Via Veneto), near a wide selection of international restaurants. We strongly encourage all participants to stay in this hotel to be able to meet the schedule (see attached registration form). Fossil forest Registration fee of $350 dollars includes brown-bag lunches and beverages in the field and transportation, as well as lunch, snacks and an ice-breaker during the workshop. A complete field guide with maps and stop descriptions will be printed for each participant. Currency in Panamá is the US dollar. Please check visa requirements, we will provide invitation letters if needed. For most nationalities the purchase of a Tourist Card on arrival (U$ 5) valid for 90 days is all that is needed. Panamá is free of malaria. Yellow fever vaccination is not required to enter the country. All field trip departure times will be from the El Panamá Hotel at 7:00 am, returning to the Hotel at 4 or 5 pm. Important Dates: -Registrations deadlines: January 15th (Hotel and conference registration form attached). -Workshop: February 8: Conferences will take place at the Tupper auditorium, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. Ciudad de Panamá. An ice breaker will take place at beautiful Punta Culebra, one of STRI s educational facilities overlooking the Pacific entrance to the Canal, right after the workshop. Registration forms must be sent to: Camilo Montes montesc@si.edu and Antonio García-Casco: agcasco@ugr.es). Registration fee must be paid in cash at the workshop.

From arc growth to orocline formation: The record from the Panama Canal and East Panama Field trip leaders: Camilo Montes, Agustín Cardona, Germán Bayona, David Farris. Max. number of participants: 30. February 9: Canal de Panamá exposures and the Colón highway. We will follow a southnorth geologic transect across the isthmus looking at the Oligocene-Miocene tectonicstratigraphic evolution of the Canal basin, and the magmatism assocciated. This will provide insights on the extinction of the arc and a possible remnant of slab break-off or distal transtensional tectonics link to the collision with South America. IGCP 546-574 Culebra Cut, Panamá Canal February 10: Pacora river. A day to look at the sequences in east Panamá considered as basement to the Panamá volcanic arc and its evolving volcanism, first arc plutons and the sedimentary record of exhumation and dissection. Some outcrops will requiere hiking. Return to Ciudad de Panamá. February 11: Mamoní river. A transect covering most the basement types of Panamá along a single river with spectacular exposures of mostly undeformed ocean-floor rocks and intrusive bodies. We will attempt to follow the exposures in rafts, water-level permitting. Pillow basalts, Mamoní river
