measures how much space matter takes up. Volume is the resistance of an object to sink, and it depends on. The ability of a substance to dissolve into another substance is called. The amount of mass for an object is called. Buoyancy (boy - un - see) density solubility density. You could think of density as thickness. Anything that has mass and takes up space is called. matter Give some examples of compounds. Give some examples of elements. Carbon monoxide (1 carbon part and 1 oxygen part) Carbon dioxide (1 carbon part and 2 oxygen parts) Water (2 hydrogen parts and 1 oxygen part) (Note: there are many more) Gold, iron, carbon, oxygen. There are over 100 known elements. The higher the, the more soluble it becomes. temperature How could you separate a mixture of flour and rice? sifting How could you separate a sugar water solution? evaporation

How is mass different than weight? Mass is the amount of matter (solid, liquid, gas) in an object, and weight is how strongly gravity pulls on an object. Different planets have different levels of gravity so if you were to go to another planet, you would have a different weight. However, the mass stays the same no matter what planet you're on. Whatever makes up the object on one planet, will be the same on any planet. List ways that mixtures can be separated. Magnetism Sifting Filtration Flotation Evaporation Distillation A material that cannot be broken down into anything simpler is called an. element A material that does not easily transfer heat is called an. You could say this material can block heat from escaping an object. insulator A material that easily transfers heat energy is called a. conductor A mixture that has different parts that you can clearly see (such as Chex mix) is called a. In this mixture, when you mix the different parts, the parts will eventually settle out and you can see them separately. suspension A mixture that has different parts that you cannot clearly see is called a. In this mixture, when you mix the different parts, it looks like there's only one part, but under a microscope, you could see the different parts. colloid A mixture with parts that blend so well that it looks the same everywhere is called a. The physical combination of substances is called a. solution mixture The smallest unit of an element is called an. atom

Something that can be observed about an object without changing the identity of the object is a. The state of matter where particles cannot move very easily because they are very close together is a. Sugar dissolves faster in water than in water. physical property solid hot cold Sugar dissolving in water is an example of a. solution What are some chemical properties of matter? What are some examples of a colloid? What are some examples of a suspension? Flammability Corrosion Reaction with water smoke mayonnaise butter muddy water oil and water sand in water What are some examples of conductors? What are some examples of insulators? Water Metals such as gold, aluminum, stainless steel, copper, silver Wood Plastic Glass Gases Fabric such as wool and cotton Rubber What are the four processes that occur when water changes its physical form? Condensation Evaporation Freezing Melting

What are the physical properties of matter? Mass Weight Volume Density Color Hardness Odor Magnetism What are the three states of matter? What happens to water when it boils? solid liquid gas Water evaporates changing it from a liquid to a gas. What is the boiling point of water? 100 degrees celcius (212 degrees farenheit) What is the melting point of water? 0 degrees celcius (32 degrees Farenheit) What is the process called when a gas changes into a liquid? condensation What is the process called when a liquid changes to a gas? evaporation What is the process called when a liquid changes to a solid? freezing What is the process called when a solid changes to a liquid? melting What type of change is a piece of rotting fruit?

What type of change is a sharpened pencil? What type of change is burning fuel (gasoline)? What type of change is burning wood? What type of change is crushing an aluminum can? What type of change is cutting a piece of wood? What type of change is exploding fireworks? What type of change is folding or tearing a sheet of paper? What type of change is food that is digested in your body? What type of change is rusting metal? What type of change occurs when a cake is baking in the oven?

What type of change occurs when a pot of water boils and steam begins to rise? What type of change occurs when bleach stains your clothes? What type of change occurs when sugar dissolves in water? What type of change occurs when water freezes into ice, water evaporates into vapor, water condenses back into a liquid, and water melts back into a liquid? Why? When water changes, the chemical makeup of water, H2O, stays the same. What type of substance combination can you separate back into their original form? mixture What's the difference between a compound and a mixture? The parts that make a compound do not keep their properties. The parts that make a mixture do keep their properties. When an object has changed in size and shape, it is called a. When an object has changed to form a new object, it is called a. When baking soda and vinegar are combined, a reaction occurs where bubbles begin to form. What type of change is this? When metal can be hammered into thin sheets, it has. malleability

When two or more elements are combined, it is called a. Which state of matter can the particles move around the easiest because they are spread further apart? compound gas Why are frying pans made of metal? Because metal is a good conductor of electricity. The metal pan transfers the heat that comes from the burner and distributes it to the food being cooked in the pan. Why do you wear jackets and coats when it's cold outside? Wires that are used to transport electricity such as a power cord are made of copper. Why? Jackets and coats are good insulators. They keep the cold air out and trap the warm air that your body produces in. Because copper is a metal and metal is a conductor of electricity.
