Name: Date: Period: Dissecting and Experiment and Analyzing Data Student Practice Data Set A A student wants to see if what he eats for breakfast affects his performance in school. In order to test this, he decides to do the following: eat nothing for breakfast every day for 4 weeks (Weeks 1-4) eat an Egg Breakfast Sandwich every day for 4 weeks (Weeks 5-8), eat a vegan breakfast burrito every day for 4 weeks (Weeks 9-12), and eat a bowl of Cheerios with 2% milk every day for 4 weeks (Week 13-16). He only drank water with breakfast and always ate at 6am. The student recorded all his weekly math quiz scores throughout the time period to see if what he had for breakfast caused any changes. Below is the data he collected. 1. IV: 2. DV: 3. Control: 4. Constants: 5. Write a hypothesis predicting which breakfast will result in the best test scores. Date and Test Score Week 1 71 Week 2 72 Week 3 65 Week 4 74 Week 5 98 Week 6 94 Week 7 96 Week 8 97 Week 9 81 Week 10 79 Week 11 85 Week 12 86 Week 13 90 Week 14 89 Week 15 92 Week 16 80 Mean The mean is also called the average. To calculate the mean, add up all of the data points, then divide this total by the number of data points. Median The median is the number that occurs in the middle of the distribution of a data set. To find the median, you should create a number line. Create a number line by placing all the data points on a line, arranging them from least to greatest. Range The range is the span between your highest and lowest value. Subtract the highest valued data point and subtract by the lowest valued data point to find the range.

6. Calculate the mean of the data. You may use a calculator but you still must show all work. Mean: 7. Draw a number line for the data and locate the median. 8. Calculate the range of the data. You may use a calculator but you still must show all work. 9. Create a line graph using the data. Plot all points on one line, but use different colors for each Marking Period (you should have 4 different colors). Include a table and label your axises.

10. Was your hypothesis correct? Why or why not? 11. Write a 3-4 sentence conclusion for this experiment based on the data and graph. Data Set B A student wants to see if the birds in his yard prefer certain types of birdseed over others. He placed 4 bowls in his yard and filled it with 30 g of seed Bowl A had sunflower seeds, Bowl B had pumpkin seeds, Bowl C had millet seeds, and Bowl D had a seed mixture of all three. He counted the number of birds at each bowl every day at noon for 7 days. He refilled the bowls every day and each bowl was on a table, free from disturbances about 3 feet off the ground. 1. IV: 2. DV: 3. Control: 4. Constants: 5. Write a hypothesis predicting which seed will attract the most birds. Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6 Day 7 Bowl A 4 4 7 3 5 3 2 Bowl B 2 1 2 0 3 1 1 Bowl C 4 3 3 5 4 5 5 Bowl D 8 7 9 8 11 6 8

6. Calculate the mean of the data FOR EACH seed type. You may use a calculator but you still must show all work. Mean BOWL A: Mean BOWL B: Mean BOWL C: Mean BOWL D: 7. Draw a number line for the data and locate the median. 8. Calculate the range of the data. You may use a calculator but you still must show all work. 9. Create a bar graph using the mean data for each bowl type. Include a table and label your axises.

10. Was your hypothesis correct? Why or why not? 11. Write a 3-4 sentence conclusion for this experiment based on the data and graph. Data Set C A student wants to see if playing music to plants will affect their growth. She buys 40 tomato plants that are all about the same height and age. She waters and fertilizes all 40 plants. For Group A, she places 10 plants along a windowsill in a silent room. For Group B, she puts 10 plants along a windowsill in another room with continuously playing classical music. For Group C, she puts 10 plants along a windowsill in another room with continuously playing pop music. For Group D, she puts 10 plants along a windowsill in another room with continuously playing heavy metal music. All of these rooms are facing south and both are kept at a temperature of 32 C. Each day she waters the plants 20mL of water. She records the growth of each plant once a week for 4 weeks. 1. IV: 2. DV: 3. Control: 4. Constants: 5. Write a hypothesis predicting which music will promote the most growth.

Calculate the mean of the data for EACH day. You may use a calculator but you still must show all work. Day 0 Mean: Day 7 Mean: Day 14 Mean: Day 21 Mean: Day 28 Mean: 7. Calculate the TOTAL growth for each Group. (HINT: Subtract Day 0 from Day 28). Group A: Group B: Group C: Group D: 8. Create a number line using the total growth for each group (use data from #7). Find the median value.

9. Create a line graph using the data. Plot all points on one line, but use different colors for each Group (you should have 4 different colors). Include a table and label your axises. 10. Was your hypothesis correct? Why or why not? 11. Write a 3-4 sentence conclusion for this experiment based on the data and graph.
