Honors Chemistry Summer Homework ***ALL DUE August 15 th, 2014*** Instructor: Amy Johnston ajohnstonon@olatheschools.org Step 1 read below Everything is made up of chemicals and your life depends upon them! Chemistry concerns the study of the nature of the substances that make up our world and the way those substances interact with each other. We will pursue this study through laboratory activities, classroom discussions, and problem solving. Unlike some subjects, each unit that we cover builds on previous units. If you get behind in one chapter, you can t just forget it and promise to do better on the next; you will need to know the material in the first chapter to succeed in the second, etc. To ensure your success, it is important that you attend class as scheduled and complete each homework/daily assignment to the best of your ability. Step 2 sign up for Honors Chemistry 14-15 -Go to http://olatheschools.edmodo.com -If you have not previously set up an account follow these instructions: b7gj65 -If you already have an account, the class code is b7gj65 Include an email that you check on a regular basis. Step 3 A little memorization! You will NEVER need to memorize the whole periodic table in this class. However you do need to know the names and symbols for the following elements by the first day of school. You must know the element name (spelled correctly) and symbol. Might I suggest flash cards??? Aluminum Argon Barium Boron Bromine Calcium Carbon Chlorine Chromium Cobalt Copper Fluorine Gold Helium Hydrogen Iodine Iron Krypton Lead Lithium Magnesium Manganese Mercury Neon Nickel Nitrogen Oxygen Phosphorus Platinum Potassium Radium Radon Silicon Silver Sodium Strontium Sulfur Tin Titanium Tungsten Uranium Vanadium Xenon Zinc Step 4 Complete Is Your Math Ready for Honors Chemistry? attached.

Step 5 Complete the SCIENTIFIC NOTATION worksheet. If you aren t sure how to finish this worksheet, I would suggest looking up scientific notation on YouTube. Stay tuned for a video posted this summer for extra help. Step 6 Metric Conversions worksheet Step 7 Complete the Video Notes. You will need to watch a video on YouTube for this. I have put the link to the video on Edmodo and there are additional instructions on that sheet. Step 8 Complete Introduction to Chemistry Step 9 Collect your REQUIRED MATERIALS for the first day of school! - A calculator (scientific - no need for a graphing calculator unless you already have one) - A lab notebook you will purchase from the school for $10.00 - A set of colored pencils 24-pack would be the best. - A 3-Ring Notebook with notebook paper. This will contain all of your materials - you will want to guard it with your life! I will provide more instructions on how to set it up. Notebooks are DUE TUESDAY August 19 th. Step 10 Watch for ADDITIONAL INFO this summer on Edmodo! Set up alerts so you remember to check the website. Questions? Send an email or message me through Edmodo. I am excited to meet you in August!
