AP Literature and Cmpsitin Summer Reading Packet Instructins and Guidelines Accrding t the Cllege Bard Advanced Placement prgram: "The AP English curse in Literature and Cmpsitin shuld engage students in the careful reading and critical analysis f imaginative literature....reading in an AP curse shuld be bth wide and deep." Therefre, yu have tw reading assignments t cmplete by the first day f class. Please wrk diligently; yu will reap the rewards f yur labr as the semester prgresses. The fllwing must be signed and returned with yur finished wrk. PLAGIARISM invlves using r stealing ideas frm smebdy else and using thse ideas as if they were yur wn. Anytime yu use material fund n the Internet r ther media withut citing that surce, yu are plagiarizing. It is cnsidered cheating, and it is abslutely unacceptable. Plagiarizing n either f the essays, study guides, r any ther part f this prject will result in an immediate grade f zer. Cpying r sharing answers with anther student is als cnsidered plagiarizing. Fr help n citing surces r further infrmatin abut plagiarism, visit http://wl.english.purdue.edu/wl/resurce/589/01/. Pledge against Plagiarism: I, (print name), testify that I did nt plagiarize while cmpleting all written wrk assciated with these assignments. The prject that I am turning in is my wn wrk. Assignment #1 1984 by Gerge Orwell Assignment #2 Bk f Yur Chice frm AP Reading List Under n circumstance can this be a bk yu have already read at any pint in time. Fr the secnd part f the summer reading requirement, I ask that yu chse a selectin frm the AP Reading List. I knw the list is lng, but all wrks listed have appeared n the pen-respnse questin f the AP exam, which makes them relevant fr test prep. I ask that yu DO NOT chse the fllwing because they will be read in class: King Lear - Shakespeare Things Fall Apart - Chinua Achebe The Kite Runner - Khaled Hsseini Please e-mail the title f yur bk t me s that I can familiarize myself with yur chice. I m excited t d sme summer reading f my wn! Belw yu will find guidelines fr cmpleting a dialectical jurnal. I ften refer t this as a duble entry jurnal (DEJ). Yu will cmplete ne fr 1984 by Gerge Orwell as well as ne fr yur AP Reading List selectin. Specific instructins: Cmplete a dialectical jurnal fr each reading assignment. Use all labels at least nce in each jurnal. Try t select three t five passages frm each chapter f yur nvel. If yur selectin frm the AP Reading List is a play, select three t five passages per scene. I feel yu shuld have a minimum f thirty entries. I realize all wrks vary in length and number f chapters; therefre, I trust yu t pull adequate entries that are representative f yur selectin as a whle. The same instructins apply t 1984 by Gerge Orwell. This nvel is divided int three parts with each part brken int chapters f varying length. A minimum f thirty entries is required.

The fllwing dialectical jurnal infrmatin was fund at https://www.madisn.k12.al.us/schls/bhs/dcuments/2013%20summer%20reading/pre-ap%2010%20dialecti cal-jurnal DIALECTICAL JOURNALS The term dialectic means the art r practice f arriving at the truth by using cnversatin invlving questin and answer. Think f yur dialectical jurnal as a series f cnversatins with yur text. The prcess is meant t help yu develp a better understanding f the text by allwing yu t incrprate yur persnal respnses, as well as yur understanding f plt, character theme, tnes, etc. I hpe yu will find that it is a useful way t prcess what yu re reading, prepare yurself fr grup discussin, and gather textual evidence fr the AP written respnses we will cmplete when class begins. PROCEDURE: As yu read, chse passages (shrt r lng) that stand ut t yu and recrd them in the left-hand clumn f the chart (ALWAYS include page numbers and paragraph numbers). In the right clumn, write yur respnse t the text (ideas/insights, questins, reflectins, and cmments n each passage) Yu must label yur respnses using the fllwing cdes: (Q) Questin ask abut smething in the passage that is unclear (C) Cnnect make a cnnectin t yur life, the wrld, r anther text (P) Predict anticipate what will ccur based n what s in the passage (CL) Clarify answer earlier questins r cnfirm/disaffirm a predictin (R) Reflect think deeply abut what the passage means in a brad sense nt just t the characters in the stry/authr f the article. What cnclusins can yu draw abut the wrld, abut human nature, r just the way things wrk? (E) Evaluate - make a judgment abut what the authr is trying t say

Sample Dialectical Jurnal Entry: Beynd the Yellw Highlighter Passages frm the text. Yu must qute 3-5 frm each chapter. Yu shuld have a minimum f 30 entries. 1. "The yellw marks in my cllege textbks...did nt help me very much. 2. "Anntatins d make me read a lt slwer and I wish I didn't have t d them. It is s much harder t fake read if yu have t anntate like we have t d nw. S nw I actually read, because it's t hard t fake anntate" Ch. #/Pg. #/ paragraph # Ch.2/82/1 Ch. 3/87/2 Each passage yu qute must relate t ne f the fllwing cdes abve. Make sure t use a variety. Using the same cdes fr mst r all f yur entries will result in a lwer scre. (C) I can relate since I ften used t highlight what I thught was imprtant and then end up with mst f the page highlighted. (C) It is harder t fake anntate--it almst takes mre time. (R) Peple are prne t find the easy way t d smething. Since there's really n easy way t anntate--fake r real--it makes sense t really read and think abut the texts. (Q) Is it really harder t fake read if yu have t anntate? Or des it just take lnger? CHOOSING PASSAGES FROM THE TEXT: Lk fr qutes that seem significant, pwerful, thught prvking r puzzling. Fr example, yu might recrd: Effective and/r creative use f stylistic r literary devices (ex. theme and tne) Passages that remind yu f yur wn life r smething yu ve seen r read befre Structural shifts r turns in the plt A passage that makes yu realize smething yu hadn t nticed befre Examples f patterns: recurring images, ideas, clrs, symbls r mtifs Passages with cnfusing language r unfamiliar vcabulary Events yu find surprising r cnfusing Passages that illustrate a particular character r setting

RESPONDING TO THE TEXT: Yu can respnd t the text in a variety f ways. The mst imprtant thing t remember is that yur bservatins shuld be specific and detailed. Yu can write as much as yu want fr each entry. Yu can chse t type yur jurnal and print it befre turning in, r yu can write by hand. Higher Level Respnses: Analyze the text fr use f literary devices (tne, structure, style, imagery) Make cnnectins between different characters r events in the text Make cnnectins t a different text (r film, sng, etc ) Discuss the wrds, ideas, r actins f the authr r character(s) Cnsider an event r descriptin frm the perspective f a different character Analyze a passage and its relatinship t the stry as a whle
