Section A: Reading Comprehension 20 marks Read the passage carefully, then answer the questions that follow. Josie Smith in the Rain On Saturday afternoon, Josie Smith knelt up on the chair at the front room window and watched the people going past in her street. Not many people went past because it was raining cats and dogs. (par. 1) They all had umbrellas, black or dark green or flowered and they walked with their heads down and the umbrellas held in front so the wind couldn t blow the rain in their faces. They all wore raincoats as well as wellingtons and gloves and headscarves and caps. Some kept their heads down and their hands in their pockets. They still got wet. (par. 2) Josie liked the smell of the rain but she liked it best when it smelled of grass. She climbed down from her chair. Josie was fed up with staying in the house. She wanted to go out. Mum? No answer. Mum! I want to play out. No answer. Josie s mum was lying on the couch and she had a book in her hand but she wasn t reading - she was fast asleep and her face was red. Josie s mum had flu. The doctor had been to see her and told her to drink a lot of liquids and rest. You ll get wet. I don t want you ill like me. Find something to do. (par. 3) Josie was good at finding something to do when it rained. She liked sitting on the rug where it was warm, with Ginger. Ginger was fat and soft and never scratched when she put her arm round him to whisper secrets near his whiskers. She liked cutting out the silver paper saved from chocolate bars to make stars, magic wands and treasure boxes for her pictures. She liked painting, drawing, reading and writing stories that she made up herself. (par. 4) But it had rained every day for days and days. Ginger had gone out early in the morning and hadn t come back in. There wasn t a single paper let in her cutting-out box because the day before she made a bouquet with tissue paper flowers.
