Space Study Guide We will have our Space Test on Friday, February 2. Please study each night this week and be prepared! Ask me if you have any questions or concerns! Vocabulary: Axis : An imaginary line that runs through the center of Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole. Constellation : A pattern of stars that form an imaginary picture or design in the sky. Galaxy : A huge system of gases, dust, and many stars. Moon : A natural body that revolves around a planet Orbit : The closed path of one object in space around another object; or to move in such a path Planet : A large body that revolves around a star Rotate : To spin around an axis Solar System : A star and all the planets and other objects that revolve around it Star : A huge ball of superheated gases Universe : Everything that exists in space Earth: The Sun is in the center of the Solar System. The Earth s rotation causes day and night The Earth orbits the Sun. The orbit takes 365 days or 1 year. The tilt of the Earth s axis causes the seasons. If the Northern hemisphere (upper half of the Earth) is tilted closer to the sun, it is summer in the Northern hemisphere. If the Northern hemisphere is tilted further away from the sun, it is winter in the Northern hemisphere. Planets: Inner planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars Inner planets have rocky surfaces and are smaller than the outer planets Outer planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune

Outer planets are mostly made of gas and are very large. The inner and outer planets are separated by an asteroid belt. The order of the planets from the sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. From largest to smallest: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Earth, Venus, Mars, Mercury) Moon: The moon orbits the Earth. Depending on where the moon is, we can see a different amount of sunlight on it. This is called the moon phases. The moon phase pattern lasts one month. Be able to label the moon phases. Stars: Know the differences between stars and planets Size: stars are bigger in size and weight than planets Color: Stars are yellow, white, red, orange, and blue. Planets can be many different colors. Number: We have 1 star and many planets in our solar system. Patterns: We organize stars by constellations. We organize planets in our solar system by order from the sun. Be able to explain why why the pattern of stars in a constellation stays the same, but a planet can be seen in different locations at different times Stars move very slowly, and they are farther away. Planets are constantly moving in orbit.
