Entry Task
Agenda Entry Task Housekeeping Section 11.3 (Other Patterns of Inheritance)
Housekeeping Chapter 11 Quiz 1 retake tomorrow, Tuesday, Mar 1. PRIDE Time on Wednesday, Mar 2 is Flex Time. Those with 4 or more incomplete/missing assignments. Running Start information night Wednesday, Mar 2 @ 1800 in the gym. Chapter 11 Quiz 2 on Thursday, Mar 3. Sections 11.3 & 11.4
Section 11.3 Other Patterns of Inheritance
Learning Objectives 11.3.1 I will be able to describe other patterns of inheritance.
Beyond Dominant & Recessive Exceptions to Mendel s work. Genetics is more complicated. Majority of genes have more than two alleles. Some traits controlled by more than one gene.
Beyond Dominant & Recessive Think, Pair, & Share Designate in your groups who is reading which sections. - Incomplete Dominance (p. 319) - Codominance (p.319) - Multiple Alleles (p. 320) - Polygenic Traits (p.320) Silent (no talking) read & make notes for 5 min. One person will share for 2 min., then the group will have 1 min to ask questions. Next person will share, etc.
Beyond Dominant & Recessive Incomplete Dominance? Some alleles are neither dominant or recessive. Not completely dominant. Heterozygous phenotype lies between homozygous phenotype.
Beyond Dominant & Recessive Codominance? Phenotype produced by both alleles clearly expressed. Colors appears separately.
Beyond Dominant & Recessive Multiple Alleles? Gene with more than two alleles. Two alleles is the exception not the rule. Ex. Humane gene for blood type.
Beyond Dominant & Recessive Polygenic Traits? Traits produced by the interaction of several genes. Polygenic = many genes. Show a wide range of phenotypes. Ex. Humane skin color controlled by 4 different genes.
BIOLOGY Tuesday 1 Mar 2016
Entry Task Explain the difference between incomplete dominance and codominance using examples.
Biology Quiz Clear off your desks. Remember No talking Keep your eyes on your own paper No electronics during the exam When you are finished Check to make sure you have filled in all bubbles. Place question and answer sheets on the front table. Or not taking the quiz, silently (no talking) read Genes and the Environment (p. 321)
Agenda Entry Task Chapter 11 Quiz 1 Retake Housekeeping Section 11.3 (Other Patterns of Inheritance) Snurfle Virtual Lab
Housekeeping PRIDE Time on Wednesday, Mar 2 is Flex Time. Those with 4 or more incomplete/missing assignments. Running Start information night Wednesday, Mar 2 @ 1800 in the gym. Chapter 11 Quiz 2 on Thursday, Mar 3. Sections 11.3 & 11.4 Chapter 11 Exam on Tuesday, Mar 8. 22 MC & 7 SA
Genes & the Environment The affects of the environment on phenotype? Affects gene expression and genetically determined traits. Phenotype is a combination and genes and the environment.

Entry Task Meiosis is similar to what other process? What are some of the similarities?

BIOLOGY Thursday 3 Mar 2016
Entry Task What are produced at the end of meiosis? Four haploid cells. Four genetically different cells. Gametes (Sperm & Egg)
Agenda Entry Task Housekeeping Section 11.4 (Meiosis)
Housekeeping Chapter 11 Quiz 2 postpone for tomorrow due to supply issues. Chapter 11 Exam on Thursday, Mar 10. 22 MC & 7 SA. Study Guide provided tomorrow.
Work of Gregor Mendel Exchange papers. If the answer is incorrect, circle the number. Write the correct answer (legibly).
Work of Gregor Mendel C 1. Genes (Factors that determine traits) B 2. Hybrids (The offspring of true-breeding parents with different traits) A 3. Traits (Specific characteristics that vary among individuals) E 4. Alleles (The different forms of a gene) D 5. Gametes (Sex cells, egg and sperm) 6. Peas are small, easy to grow, & they produce large numbers of offspring. 7. He removed the male parts from one flower & dusted their pollen (containing sperm) onto the female parts of another flower.
Work of Gregor Mendel 8. A gene is a factor that passes from parent to offspring & determines a trait. An allele is one form of a gene. 9. Some alleles are dominant & some are recessive. An organism with one dominant allele for a trait will exhibit that form of the trait. - table = Gg (Gray), Ss (Smooth), & Cc (Green) 10. The dominant shape of a pea pod is smooth. You know because the smooth trait shows up in the F1 generation. That s why its allele is a capital letter. 11. The symbol for the recessive allele for pod color is c (lowercase)
Work of Gregor Mendel 12. Segregation is the separation of alleles during formation of gametes. The result is that gamete carries one allele for each gene. 13. GG gg G G g g Gg Gg Gg Gg 14. The trait produced by a pair of recessive alleles (white fur) was not exhibited in the individuals of the F1 generation, but it reappeared in one fourth of the F2 offspring. That proves the genetic information was never lost, even though it was not expressed.
Section 11.4 Meiosis
Learning Objectives 11.4.1 I will be able to summarize the events of meiosis.
Chromosome Number Diploid vs Haploid? Diploid contains 2 complete sets of chromosome & 2 complete sets of genes. - 2N Haploid contains only a single set. - N
