Tomelleri S.r.l. Copyright 2007 ADVANCED SYSTEMS
s.r.l.started its activities back in 1984, developing projects (feasibility studies and designs) in astronomy and other sectors (such as machine tools, measuring machines, robotics, etc). Since 1995 has also made supplies in the field of Subsystems of Telescopes and Instruments, and other products as a result of the research in different fields with many patents filed. Tomelleri s facility in Villafranca (VR) - Italy 2
FEASIBILITY STUDY AND EXECUTIVE DESIGN At present, provides research, feasibility studies, design and workshop drawings using CAD systems (Pro-E, AutoCad 2009, Inventor), programs for structural calculations (ANSYS Design Space, Solidworks), as well as dynamic system simulation tools (MATLAB & SimuLink). Design and supply of the electrical and electronic parts, hardware and software, are also carried out. High precision X-Y Stage FEA of hydrostatic pad 3

3D CALIBRATION SYSTEMS FOR MACHINE TOOLS Calibration system for Machine Tools and Accessories for increasing of certified accuracy in all the working field and in all directions with optimization of the accuracy index chosen by the costumer. The Mathematical Model, that includes Automatic Heads and Rotating Tables, compensates also errors due to temperature and combined movements of all axes. Laser Tracker 6
IN ASTRONOMY s.r.l. has been and still is involved in major telescope projects in relation to Bearing, Drive and Measurement Systems, as well as Instruments and special devices, conceived in cooperation with the main Italian Astronomical and Astrophysical Observatories (e.g. Arcetri, Padua, Rome, Bologna, Merate, Capodimonte), the European Southern Observatory, the Max Planck Institute, as well as some Observatories in the USA, namely the Stewart Observatory in Tucson and the TMT Observatory Corporation. Most of the projects are then realized including: manufacturing, accuracy test by CMM or by Articulated Arm Measuring Machines, assembly, performance verification, that can be performed with appropriate Test Benches if required. The company has the management of all activities, but in its facilities only assembling, adjusting and testing activities are performed, while the workpieces are machined by other companies. 7
cooperates with FORMENTI company, based in Verona, for the machining of most pieces of our production, equipped with horizontal and vertical lathes, boring and milling machines, machines for drilling, grinding, as well as measuring machines for testing the pieces. Formenti s workshop 8

Design of the Drive units for the Positioning of the De-rotator for the VLT (Very Large Telescope). Design and productionof the mechanics of the LBT Test Camera. 9
Feasibility study, design and productionof the mechanical parts of the NIRVANA instrument (GLWFS) for LBT. Feasibility study, design and productionof the mechanics of the GIANO instrument for the TNG. Feasibility study of the Hydrostatic Bearing System, Driving System, Measuring System and Auxiliary Units of the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). Feasibility study, design and productionof the mechanical parts of the MAD@VLT. Feasibility study, design and productionof the mechanical parts of the GROUND LAYER@LBT. Feasibility study, design and production of the IQUEyE for NTT. Feasibility study, design and production of the whole main mirror support system for VST. Feasibility study and design of the Hydrostatic Bearing System of the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT). 10
HYDROSTATIC BEARING SYSTEMS In relation to the Hydrostatic Bearing Systems provides research, feasibility studies, design and workshop drawings using CAD systems, programs for structural and thermal calculations, as well as dynamic system simulation tools. Thanks to our experience in the astronomy field, the hydrostatic supports and the related HBS have been developed for specific telescope requirements, which led to new solutions and patents. The most part of the pieces are manufactured at FORMENTI s facilities, that has expertise in the accurate working of the pads with suitable machines and tools, while assembly and testing are performed in our facility including performance verification. Accuracy tests are carried out by third party with CMM. Design and supply of the Oil Control System, piping, electrical and electronic parts, hardware and software, are also carried out. Delivery and on site assistance can be provided when requested. 11
