Plitical Effects Of Mngl Rule (gv t, laws, state building, cnflict) China Invasin was nt as vilent (especially in Suth) Yuan Dynasty = Direct Rule Accmmdated Chinese administrative plicies (saw China as valuable, respected) Transferred their capital Brught freigners t help them rule as gvernment fficials Laws discriminated against Chinese Used Cnfucian and many rituals Invasin was brutal Russia Cnquered but nt ccupied, n permanent administratin r Mngl settlers Thught Russia had little t ffer, nt lcated n majr trade rutes) Used lcal Russian princes t extract taxes and tribute

Ecnmic Effects Of Mngl Rule (Prductin, trade, taxes) Pax Mnglia increased trade alng Silk Rad (Glden Age) Prvided financial backing fr caravans Supprted merchants with tax breaks, much mre than under Chinese dynasties Suffered frm Black Death r Plague, decrease in ppulatin in majr cities Taxed peasants heavily Pax Mnglia increased trade alng Silk Rad (Glden Age), tk part in the increased Eurasian trade and prsperity Heavy burden placed n peasants Mngl plicies led t cllapse f city f Kiev and rise f Mscw as the cre f the new Russia state after Mngls left Suffered frm Black Death r Plague, decrease in ppulatin in majr cities Arrw Key: 1 st Arrw = Methd f Plitical Rule (P/DIFF), 2 nd Arrw = Glden Age f Trade (E/ SIM), 3 rd Arrw = Effects f Plague (E/SIM) Step 2: Lk fr Cnnectins Draw lines cnnecting tpics fr yur direct cmparisns and bdy paragraph tpics. Set ut yur categries r direct cmparisns Add analysis if pssible (Expanded cre pint) Examples f Unacceptable Thesis Statements: The Mngls affected China and Russia similarly and differently. (This merely restates the questin, and is way t vague t cunt fr anything.) The Mngls greatly affected China and the Middle East plitical and ecnmically. Acceptable thesis statement must: Answer the questin being asked (Duble check t be sure yu are discussing the crrect place, time and themes.) Address all parts f the questin (similarities AND differences) Take a stand r psitin n the questin (Are they mre similar r mre different?) Set ut yur categries r direct cmparisns Add analysis if pssible (Expanded cre pint) Thesis Paragraph/Statement Example: In the 13 th century, under the leadership f Genghis Khan, the Mngls, a pastral nmadic grup frm Central Asia, were able t cnquer and build the largest cntiguus land empire that spanned fur millin square miles frm the Mediterranean Sea in the Middle East t the edges f East Asia. Mngl cnquest and

subsequent rule had a prfund plitical and ecnmic impact n each civilizatin that came under their rule, including the civilizatins f China and Russia. While China and Russia differed in regards t the methd f Mngl plitical rule, bth scieties benefitted greatly ecnmically frm the increase in Eurasian trade alng the Silk Rad under the Pax Mnglia yet suffered tremendusly as a result f the spread f the plague r Black Death by the Mngls in the 14 th century. Several Sentences f Evidence t Supprt Yur Direct Cmparisn Supprt yur Direct Cmparisn with a substantial amunt f apprpriate, relevant and accurate histrical evidence fr bth parts f yur direct cmparisn statement Mst AP Exam rubrics call fr a minimum f 6-7 pieces f evidence Include at least 3 pieces f evidence fr each f yur direct cmparisns r bdy paragraphs = ttal f 9 pieces f evidence 3. Analysis f Yur Direct Cmparisn Yu must answer this questin, WHY are X and Y similar r different in THIS way? Cmmn ANALYTICAL cues: affected by, as a result f, came frm, because, caused by, due t, in rder t, led t A cmplete analysis must mentin bth cause and effect fr bth scieties Reminder: Yu are analyzing yur direct cmparisn statement

Example f a Bdy Paragraph: After the initial and destructive Mngl cnquest, China and Russia differed in the way in which the Mngls plitically ruled their civilizatin, with China being ruled directly by the Mngls and Russia being allwed t a measure f self-rule. In China the Mngls established the Yuan dynasty, mved their capital city t present day Beijing and brught freigners in t help them serve as gvernment fficials ver the Chinese. Hwever, in their rule, the Mngl r Yuan gvernment accmmdated many f the Chinese administrative plicies, but used laws t discriminate against the native Chinese and discntinued the civil service examinatin system. Cnversely, in Russia, the Mngls did nt set up permanent administratin r prmte Mngl settlements. Instead, the Mngls dminated Russia frm a distance and were able t retain their steppe lifestyle and relied n Russian princes t extract taxes and tribute. While these princes were mre r less left alne by the Mngls, they fund it useful t adpt Mngl weapns, diplmatic rituals, curt practices and taxatin systems. Russia was allwed t maintain self-rule because the Mngls believed that Russia had little t ffer them and their ecnmy was far less develped than China, which was lcated directly n the majr trade rutes f Eurasia, the famus Silk Rads.
