2 QUESTION ONE: ENVIRONMENTS AND FEATURES Read the following geographic concept and refer to it, as well as Resources A D on pages 2 4 of the resource booklet, when answering (a). Geographic Concept Environments may be natural and / or cultural. They have particular characteristics and features which can be the result of natural and / or cultural processes. The particular characteristics of an environment may be similar to or different from another environment. (a) (i) Give a geographic description of the natural features of Te Araroa. (ii) Describe the cultural environment of Te Araroa. (iii) What is the name and height of the flat-topped hill immediately south of Te Araroa? (b) (i) In the box below, draw the symbol for the cultural feature, Historic Māori pā. Note: A Māori pā is a village. (ii) Fully explain the geographic location of the Historic Māori pā sites in this environment, and refer to the geographic concept of environments.

One of the students drew the cross section the wrong way round, the other drew it correctly. 5 QUESTION TWO: GEOGRAPHIC SKILLS AND CHANGE Read the following geographic concept and refer to it, as well as Resource F on page 6 of the resource booklet, when answering this question. Geographic Concept Change involves any alteration to the natural or cultural environment. Change can be spatial and/or temporal. Change is a normal process in both natural and cultural environments. It occurs at varying rates, at different times, and in different places. Some changes are predictable, recurrent or cyclic, while others are unpredictable or erratic. Change can bring about further change. Geographers use both maps and photographs when studying change in the environment. Resource F shows two photographs of the same stretch of the Karakatuwhero River (AR6920), taken 10 years apart. (a) Fully explain TWO changes that have occurred between 2004 and 2014.
