Solar System
Your task for each planet... Slide 1: What type of planet is it? (either rocky terrestrial world, gas giant or ice giant) What is it made of? Does it have any moons? What is its mass relative to Earth? How long is a year on your planet? How old would you be on your planet? Slide 2: 3-4 Interesting Facts A pretty picture
Mercury Type of Planet: rocky terrestrial world Composed of: mainly iron (and heavier elements) Number of moons: 0 Mass relative to Earth: 0.0553 Length of a year: 88 days Your age: 67 years old
Mercury -Mercury is the smallest/innermost planet of the solar system -a person on Mercury would weigh 38% of their weight on Earth -a Mercury day is 176 Earth days -it does not possess any moons or rings
Venus Type of Planet: Rocky Composed of: Central Iron Core and a Rocky Mantle (similar to Earth) atmosphere is 96% Carbon Dioxide 3% Nitrogen and small portion of other gases Number of moons: No moon(s) Mass relative to Earth: 82% Length of a year: 225 Days Your age: K: 27.7 R: 25.5 B: 26.2
Venus - The third brightest object in Earth s sky after the Sun and Moon - Sometimes referred to as Earth s sister planet because of the close similarity in size and since it is the closest planet to Earth - Astronomers know of more than 1,600 volcanoes on the surface of Venus - Days are longer than years on Venus - Pressure is 90x the pressure at sea level on Earth
Earth Type of Planet:terrestrial planet Composed of:the rock mantle consists of Silicon, iron, magnesium, aluminum, oxygen, calcium, sodium, potassium Number of moons:1 Mass relative to Earth: 1 Length of a year:365 day Your age:16 years old
Earth -Earth is NOT a perfect sphere. I repeat, NOT a perfect sphere, but a squashed sphere -the earth was once believed to be the center of the universe -Earth is the only planet not named after a God -The earth Is the densest planet in the solar system -At the equator, you would weigh less than if standing at one of the poles.
Mars Mars is a rocky terrestrial planet Composed of rock and metals, the reddish tint comes from iron (III) oxide. Mars has 2 moons Mars has about 11% of Earth s mass One mars year is 687 earth days I, Otto Mao would be about 8.4 years old as a Martian.
Mars Mars is named after the Roman god of War. There are signs that there was once water on Mars and where water is, life also has the possibility to be, so life on Mars may have existed at some point. One day, Mars will get a ring like Saturn. Pieces of Mars have fallen to Earth
Asteroid Belt Sometimes referred to as Minor Planets Located in the large gap between the orbit of Mars and the orbit of Jupiter, this region is known as the Asteroid belt More than 10,000 have been discovered A few asteroids have elliptical paths that bring them inside Mars orbit or even inside Earth s orbit. Some are rocky, others rich in iron or carbon Scientist hypothesis extinction of Dinosaurs may have been due to large impact of an Asteroid.
Asteroid Belt
Jupiter Type of Planet: Gas giant Composed of: primarily composed of hydrogen wuth a quarter of its mass being helium. Number of moons: at least 69 moons Mass relative to Earth: 317.8 Earths Length of a year: 11.862 earth years Your age: 1.41 years old
Jupiter The Interesting Facts 1. Jupiter is the fourth brightest object in the solar system. 2. It is two and a half times more massive than all the other planets in the solar system combined. 3. Jupiter s moon Ganymede is the largest moon in the solar system.
Saturn Type of Planet: Gas giant Composed of: a core of iron-nickel and rock. A deep layer of Metallic hydrogen, a intermediate layer of liquid hydrogen, and a gaseous outer layer Number of moons: 62moons Mass relative to Earth: 95.159 earths Length of a year: 29.4571 earth years Your age: 0.54 years old
Saturn 1. Saturn can be seen with the naked eye.( It is bright.) 2. Saturn was the Roman god of agriculture. 3. Saturn is the flattest planet.
Uranus Type of Planet: Ice Giant Composed of: A Hot, dense substance made up of water, methane and ammonia Number of moons: 27 small moons (known) Mass relative to Earth: 14.5 Length of a year: 84.01 Earth years Your age: 0.19 years and 0.18 years
Uranus It has 13 known rings The inner of which are narrow and dark The outer of which are brightly colored It rotates on its side The planet s north pole gets 21 years of night-time in winter, 21 years of daytime in summer and 42 years of day and night in the spring and fall
Neptune Type of Planet: Ice Giant Composed of: A Hot, dense substance made up of water, methane and ammonia Number of moons: 13 (known), 1 awaiting confirmation Mass relative to Earth: 17.1 Length of a year: 164.79 Earth years Your age: 0.09 years
Neptune Pluto is sometimes closer to the sun than Neptune is Not visible to the naked eye Named after the Roman god of the sea It has crazy winds that can reach up to 1,996 kph (1,240 mph)
OOrt Cloud Theorized by Jan Oort Extends from 5,000-100,000 AU s Home to long-period comets Never been observed, only a theory Contains 0.1-2 trillion comets Edge of our solar system
Comets dirty snowballs : - a compact chunk of frozen gases and dust - only a few kilometres in diameter - Long period comets in Oort cloud take over 200 years to orbit - Fly into the inner solar system - When a comet is a large distance from the Sun, it remains totally frozen and is not observable. When it gets near the Sun, it heats up. Some of its gas is vaporized by the heat and some of its dust is released. - It develops a big gas and dust cloud called a coma. It also develops two tails, a gas tail which points directly away from the Sun and a dust trail, which points away from the Sun but is swept backward along the comet s orbit.
