C NT CT A Publication of the Wyoming Geological Association Volume V, No. 7 July 2013 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Mike Hawks Fellow WGA Members, During June, the WGA and its event-specific partners, pulled off two significant events; the Cretaceous Conference: Evolution and Revolution and the 2nd Annual Gene George Memorial Golf Tournament. Our Friday luncheon schedule has suffered a bit due to the busy schedule and a Memorial Day weekend. Some numbers regarding the field conference: 73 people attended the western Powder River Basin field trip on Saturday 91 people were registered for the Sunday tech session, 13 talks were presented 71 people registered for the Monday tech session, 12 talks presented 67 people attended the eastern PRB field trip on Tuesday People from 19 states attended with some from as far away as Alaska and Florida Again, thanks to all the volunteers and sponsors: Helis Oil & Gas, Baker Hughes, Kirkwood Oil & Gas, Gerald Forney, Goolsby, Finley & Associates, Wold Oil Properties, Old Dead Things and Anadarko Petroleum. The 2nd Annual Gene George Memorial Golf Tournament was played June 28th at the Three Crowns Golf Club in Casper. Fourteen 4-person teams competed for the coveted drill bit trophies put together by Dayton Lewis. First place was awarded to the Andy Finley team, with second place going to yours truly and my team. Multiple sponsors were gracious enough to sponsor golf holes which will help in the bottom line and maximize proceeds to scholarships. JULY 2013 LUNCHEON SPEAKER ABSTRACTS 5 July No Meeting - Independence Day Holiday! 12 July Title: Umiat, Linc Energy s Arctic Frontier Speaker: Paul Ludwig, General Manager, Shared Services, Linc Energy Operations, Inc. Biography: With more than 30 years experience in the energy industry, Paul joined Linc Energy in 2010 shortly after Linc Energy established operations in the U.S. Paul built and implemented the initial stakeholder relations and communications strategy and plan for Linc Energy s expanding North American operations including UCG, GTL and Oil and Gas operations. In his current role as General Manager, Shared Services, Paul manages Linc Energy s North American communications, stakeholder, government, HR, investor realtions and community initiatives in Alaska, Gulf Coast, and Northern Rockies business units. Originally from New York, Paul has degrees in business administration and management from the State University of New York at Cobleskill and Arizona State University. Paul s wife, Stephanie is a software engineer for Lockheed Martin global security clearance network. They have one son, Kristopher, a recent graduate from the University of Hawaii at Manoa who has made his home in Honolulu, HI 19 July Title: History of the North Platte River Speaker: Annette Hein, Student, Casper College Biography: Annette Hein is a geology student at Casper College. She has been interested in geology since high school and is excited at the chance to do research in the field. The work for this talk was done in 2012 under a grant from the Wyoming NASA Space Grant Consortium and is being continued this summer under a second grant, which has to be one of the best summer jobs ever. Outside of school, she enjoys music, gardening, and anything outdoors. 26 July Title: The Nitty Gritty of the US Western Plains: Geologic influence on Grazing Mammal Evolution Speaker: Deborah Rook, Doctoral Candidate, University of Wisconsin-Madison 2013 Love Scholarship Recipient Biography: Deborah L. Rook is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Geoscience, with a focus on paleontology. She has an undergraduate degree in Biology and Evolutionary Biology from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, and a Master's degree from Ohio State University in Evolution, Ecology and Organismal Biology focusing on mammal paleontology. Outside of her research, teaching and outreach activities are very important to her. She is currently the chair of the Outreach and Education committee for the Crow Institute for the Study of Evolution at UW, and has taught several classes at both OSU and UW. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PTTC Summer Workshops Petroleum Geology for Non-Geologists Tuesday July 9, 2013, 8:30 am 5:00 pm Colorado School of Mines, Berthoud Hall room 241 Fee: $250 (includes food at breaks, workbook, and PDH certificate) Instructor: Dr. Stephen Sonnenberg (Colorado School of Mines) Course is for petroleum industry personnel in need of basic geological training. Course participants include: engineering, geophysical, technical support, and administrative personnel. Topics covered include: plate tectonics and sedimentary basins, geologic time; the petroleum system; depositional systems; porosity and permeability; conventional reservoirs; unconventional reservoirs; well log correlation and analysis; contour maps and cross sections; source rocks and seals. The Instructor: Dr. Stephen A. Sonnenberg is a Professor and holds the Charles Boettcher Distinguished Chair in Petroleum Geology at the Colorado School of Mines. He specializes in unconventional reservoirs, sequence stratigraphy, tectonic influence on sedimentation, and petroleum geology. A native of Billings, Montana, Sonnenberg received BS and MS degrees in geology from Texas A&M University and a Ph.D. degree in geology from the Colorado School of Mines. He has over twenty-five years experience in the industry. Petroleum Engineering for Non-Engineers Wednesday July 10, 2013, 8:30 am 5:00 pm Colorado School of Mines, Berthoud Hall room 241 Fee: $250 (includes food at breaks, workbook, and PDH certificate) Instructor: Dr. Jennifer Miskimins (Colorado School of Mines) This one-day short course provides a broad, basic understanding of various petroleum engineering topics for non-engineers. The focus of the course is placed on the design, construction, stimulation, and production of wells. Specific topics discussed include the drilling of wells, rig types, wellbore integrity and design, completion types, casing and tubing definitions, downhole tools such as packers, formation damage, and stimulation including hydraulic fracturing. As the title implies, the course is designed for those who work in the oil and gas industry but do not have a technical background in subsurface topics. Previous attendees that have found the course useful include landmen, technicians, accountants, financiers, and field personnel. The Instructor: Dr. Jennifer Miskimins is an Associate Professor in the Petroleum Engineering Department at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) in Golden, Colorado, USA. Dr. Miskimins holds B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in petroleum engineering. Prior to joining CSM, she worked for Marathon Oil Company in a variety of locations. Dr. Miskimins is the founder and Director of the Fracturing, Acidizing, Stimulation Technology (FAST) Consortium at CSM. She teaches a variety of courses including completions and stimulation classes, geologic field camps, and petroleum economics courses at CSM and as industry short courses.
