NCTM Annual Meeting and Eposition Denver, CO April 8, Presented by Mike Koehler Blue Valley North High School Overland Park, KS I. Approimations with Rectangles (Finding the Area Under Curves by Approimating with Rectangles The area under a curve y = f( can be approimated through the use of Riemann sums: n Area = f ( LRAM n = Sum of n rectangles using the left-hand -coordinate of each interval to find the height of the rectangle. RRAM n = Sum of n rectangles using the right-hand -coordinate of each interval to find the height of the rectangle. MRAM n = Sum of n rectangles using the midpoint -coordinate of each interval to find the height of the rectangle. k = k k Let f ( = + on[, ]. If there are intervals, what is the value of? If there are 6 intervals, what is the value of? If there are n intervals and all n intervals are the same width, what is the value of? k k For each of the following, draw the indicated rectangles and find the area of the rectangles. On the first figure, draw three rectangles using the left-hand rule. (LRAM Find the area of each rectangle, and find the sum of the areas. k

Draw si rectangles using the lefthand rule. (LRAM 6 Find the area of each rectangle, and find the sum of the areas. Draw and compute RRAM 6 Draw three rectangles using the mid-point rule. (MRAM Find the area of each rectangle, and find the sum of the areas.

Use the DRAWRECT program on the TI-84+ to complete the table on the right for the function f( = +. Use this program up to n = 5, and then use the RAM program (Rectangular Approimation Method. Discuss whether these will under estimate or overestimate the actual area. n LRAM MRAM RRAM 6 5 5 Let (,. Use the DRAWRECT and RAM programs to complete the following table. Work in groups of three, with each person taking one of the three types of approimation. f = on [ ] Discuss whether these will under estimate or overestimate the actual area. n LRAM MRAM RRAM 8 5 5 The definite integral is the limit of a Riemann sum as the number of intervals approach infinity (width of the interval approaches zero as indicated in the following formula: n b = n k k a k =. lim f( f( d The fnint ( m 9:fnInt( option on the calculator produces a numerical integral of the function. It computes an approimation of the total area from = a to = b. The TI-84+ with current operating system will show an integral unless the calculator is in Classic Mode. The synta on a TI-8+ or TI-84+ in classic mode is fnint( function, variable of integration, left endpoint, right endpoint.
