I did my A-Levels in the UK, like many of you I'm sure, and I got a place to study BSc Biomedical Sciences at Royal Holloway where I achieved a 2:1. After my BSc I got a place on a graduate Medicine programme in Europe, where I currently study TUITION FREE. R O U T E 1 GRADUATE ENTRY 4- YEAR COURSE IN THE UK This one's probably the most obvious route. After having studied for 3 years for your BSc degree, studying for another 5 years to become a doctor is not a particularly attractive option. Luckily, because some of the modules of your BSc overlap with those of a Medicine degree, some universities have 4-year graduate programmes available. To do this, start making your application at the end of the second year of your BSc degree. Most if not all universities will require you to do GAMSAT, and a high score will help set you apart from the rest. If you successfully gain a place, you ll graduate in Medicine in just 7 years overall, including 3 years of your BSc. This is however a very competitive route (even more so than for undergraduate Medicine admissions), and supply of graduate entry places far outstrips demand. T O P T I P S O N N E X T P A G E - - >

R O U T E 1 ( C O N T I N U E D ) TOP TIPS: Start preparing for your GAMSAT exam at least 6-12 months in advance of the exam date (it is major exam so do not take it lightly!). Additionally, make sure you have work experience spread out over several months/years. A couple of hours a week spaced out over a year or two looks much better to admissions tutors than a few weeks intensive on the eve of making your application. Since you ll have to apply through UCAS, you ll be limited in the number of applications you can make. Consider also applying to Europe to keep your options as wide as possible. We explore this option next. T H E N E X T O N E I S T H E S M A R T E S T - - >

R O U T E 2 GRADUATE ENTRY 4- YEAR COURSE IN EUROPE This is an increasingly popular route as courses are taught in English and are fully recognised globally (including in the UK by the GMC). I myself went through this route and have never looked back. Competition is less fierce and you ll gain international experience inherently (which is a great thing!). Countries that offer these courses are predominantly based in central Europe, and so you ll never be far from home. Teaching is done in English. Admissions are open twice a year and in the end, you ll graduate with an MD degree. An MD degree contains the contents of Foundation Year 1 within, which means that upon graduation, you'll be able to go straight to Foundation Year 2 if you choose to practice in the UK. And so although you ll be studying for a total of 7 years (3 years BSc and 4 years MD), you'll save a year reaching Foundation Year 2. T O P T I P S O N N E X T P A G E - - >

R O U T E 3 GERMANY This is an excellent option if you ve achieved, or are on track to achieving, a first class degree. You will need German language skills, so if you are interested, consider learning the language in your spare time starting from today. Typically, for those who have a BSc degree, you ll qualify for exemption for up to a whole semester. Admissions are usually largely based on grades alone, and it is not unusual to be offered a place without interview if your A-Level grades and degree classification are excellent. R O U T E 3 ( C O N T I N U E D ) TOP TIPS: Ensure your grades are sufficient before embarking on the journey of learning a new language. In Germany, teaching is in German and so your German will need to be to a high standard. R O U T E 4 STANDARD 5-YEAR COURSE IN THE UK As mentioned earlier, the graduate-entry programmes in the UK are extremely competitive. From my class of over a hundred Biomedical Sciences students only one person got a place. Therefore, you may fare better if you just applied for the standard 5-year undergraduate places. You should apply just as you would to a graduate programme, that is, at the end of the second year of your BSc. For this route you ll need to sit the UKCAT or BMAT exam, depending on which university you apply to. TOP TIPS: Practice makes perfect. This is especially true for UKCAT. Try to enrol on the online KAPLAN course to achieve a high score. Work experience: exactly the same goes for that I mentioned in route 1 earlier. M A N Y M O R E R O U T E S - - >

R O U T E 5 OTHER ROUTES If you are happy to do a 6-year MD programme instead of a 4-year, then many more options open up for you. There are over 50 universities across Europe in countries such as Italy, Malta, Poland, Germany, Slovakia, often where teaching is in English (and so you won t need to learn another language). Some countries will be more competitive than others such as Italy where you will be required to sit the IMAT exam. Scoring very highly in the IMAT exam will increase your chances of entry, and typically the top scoring students are those that are offered places (and so if you're not great at interviews, you're in luck). O V E R A L L T A K E - H O M E T I P S - - >

OVERALL TIPS Consider all options! I ve come across a number of students who go along this route: they apply to UCAS as an undergraduate, fail, then study BSc Biomedical Sciences or similar in the hope to get into the same universities, fail again, then apply to Europe, and succeed, having lost a number of years trying to get a place in the UK. Had they ALSO applied to Europe from the outset, they would have a concrete and viable Plan B option that would have saved a number of years of trying. The end result is the same - becoming a doctor! Spread your work experience! Admissions tutors find a student more impressive if he/she has part-time experience spread out over a number of months/years rather than, say, a few weeks over summer full-time. It shows more effort and commitment to the profession. Make your personal statement truly spectacular.
