Title Place Date 24 Spring school on superstrings and related matters ASICTP, Italy Apr, 2001 25 International workshop on string Allahabad, Jan, 2002 theory 26 Refresher course in experimental physics Kalpakkam, Oct, 2002 Summary of Research Work I am interested in string theory in general and conformal, superconformal and topological field theories in general. With Kumar, Maharana and Sengupta I have studied the algebraic structure of a topological field theory on higher genus Reimann surfaces using Krichever-Novikov global operator formalism. This topological field theory was obtained by twisting a large N = 4 superconformal theory. We first otained an N = 4 superconformal theory with one additional weight one field from the large N = 4 theory. Subsequently it was topologically twisted to get above algebraic structure. The resulting theory has both N = 2superconformal and topological structures. Same proceedure was by me with Kumar and Jatkar for twisting a large N = 4 superconformal theory on a complex plane in an unpulished work. With Kumar I also found the topological nature of level zero SU(2) Kac-Moody symmetry using Wakimoto realization. With Kumar I studied the contraction of large N = 4 sulperconformal algebra using Inonu-Wigner method. We realised that we get a new N = 4 superconformal algebra which we call middle algera. It has SU(2) U(1). With Kumar I also generalized the BTZ three dimensional black hole solution of general relativity to string theory by incorporating the dilaton and anti-symmetric tensor field. It was shown that this solution transforms to a known moving black solution if we use the target space duality symmetry, that is O(d, d). I have independently studied the target space duality symmet ry from the world sheet point of view. I obtained the world sheet superstring action with target duality symmetry in case of flat as well as local world sheet supersymmetry. I also wrote a non-linear symmetric sigma model action with target space dualith symmetry when the background fields are independent of some of the target space coordinates. I have also studied the problem of free field realization of the middle N = 4 superconformal symmetry. If we begin with known free field realizations of large N = 4 superconformal symmetry to obtain free field realizations of the middle N = 4 algebra we end up with fixed central charge. This was discouraging to say the least. I realized that to get parameterized central charge for the free field realizations of the middle algebra we must first generalize the realizations of the large algebra. This step was taken by me in another publication. The generalized realization of the large N = 4 algebra leads to parameterized free field realization of the middle algebra. Thus the middle algebra can be treated on equal footings with the large algebra. In another work I demonstrated that the superconformal symmetry relevant for superstrings moving on AdS 3 S 3 T 4 as well as the D1/D5 system is the middle N = 4 algebra mentioned above. Future Plan of Research Work.............................................................................. In future I would like to extend above work in different directions. I would like to further investigate the mathematical structure of the middle N = 4 superconformal algebra. I would like to find its genuine place in the AdS/CF T correspondance. This may help in illustrating t he structure of correlation functions of string theory on AdS 3 S 3 T 4. Another problem to investigate is the N = 4 superfield formalism for large N = 4 symmetry. There seems to be some confusion regrding this aspects and I expect to clarify matters in this regard.
