January 2008 January Meeting Pete Kron from Astronomics January 25, 2008 7:00PM TCC Metro Campus - Philips Auditorium Building 2 9th and Cincinnati PRESIDENT S MESSAGE By Tamara Green AS TR O N O M Y CL UB OF TU LS A It's a new year, Boys and Girls! I wish all of y'all a happy 2008! We have a lot to look forward to this year, beginning with our January 2008 meeting to be held at TCC Metro Campus, Phillips Building Auditorium, on Friday, January 25 at 7:00 PM. Our guest speaker will be Pete Kron from Astronomics. He will be bringing the latest in Astronomy goodies and giving a presentation on them, so whether you come with your checkbooks or just to dream and drool a little, this promises to be an exciting presentation. Astronomics is one of the leading Astronomy equipment and telescope dealers in the nation, with ads appearing monthly in publications such as Sky and Telescope Magazine. I hope all of you will come and enjoy this presentation. There will be a total lunar eclipse on Wednesday, February 20 th. First umbral contact is at 7:43 PM. Totality begins at 9:01 PM and ends at 9:55 PM. Last contact occurs at 11:08 PM. All times are given in Central Standard Time. If you get a chance to see this eclipse, DO, because there will not be another one here until December of 2010! And, there is no better place to view this exciting phenomenon that our first big public event of the year, to be held at the Tulsa Air and Space Museum on February 20. I know it's in the middle of the week, but it will be well worth it, considering the length of time until the next total lunar eclipse visible in our area will be. I call this event Dark Shadows II, since it occurs almost one year after our previous Dark Shadows event with TASM, held last March. Those who attended last year can attest to how successful and fun the event was. I am sure this one will be just as enjoyable and successful as its predecessor. Anyone who wishes to come out and set up scopes will be very much appreciated. As always, the more volunteers we have on hand to share this event with our communities, the merrier! More information on this event will be coming soon. Our annual ACT/TUVA Messier Marathon will be held again at TUVA this year, scheduled for the weekend of April 5-6. This is always a fun challenge for those who are up to it. Are you?? However, please keep in mind that this will be an ALL-NIGHT event, starting at dusk and ending at dawn, and even in Springtime the night air can become quite chilly. With this in mind, this is not an event for small children ( or wusses ). In past years, there has been a pot-luck dinner before the marathon begins, and if our always gracious and wonderful hosts, Ron and Maura agree to keep with this tradition, that will be a nice beginning to a fun-filled night! So, if this is part of the festivities, and you wish to bring a dish to share, you are certainly welcome to do so. At this time, I do not yet have any information on whether or not there will be a caravan to the site, but I should find out for sure when it gets closer to time for the event, and more info will be coming. So mark your calendars and come on out to see how many Messier objects you can find! And of course, don't forget our star parties! Our first one of 2008 will be on Friday, Jan. 11 at our observatory, with Saturday, Jan. 12 as the back-up night. For those of you who are new, especially if you have a new scope you are not used to yet, please feel welcome to set up next to any experienced club member, or on the center pad on the field. We will be more than happy to assist you in the workings of your scope and introduce you to the wonders of the night sky. Hope to see you all there! As our Secretary Teresa said to me in a recent email, Let's have fun this year! I look forward to seeing you all and clear skies! Tamara
