A Tetra Tech Company. COMBINED BULK AND CLAY XRD ANALYSES OF FOUR WEATHERED ROCK SAMPLES RECOVERED FROM THE DIFFERENT DEPTHS AT THE BH13-04 EKATI LOCATION. Work Order A16479 August, 2013 AGAT Laboratories Ltd. 3801-21 Street N.E. Calgary, Alberta T2E 6T5
A Tetra Tech Company. Work Order No. A16479 Combined XRD Analysis August, 2013 COMBINED X-RAY DIFFRACTION ANALYSIS Four samples of weathered rock recovered from the depth of 7.10-7.15m, 4.58-4.68m, 2.45-2.50m, 0.80-0.82m and BH13-04 EKATI location were cleaned of hydrocarbons prior to analysis, and the cleaned solids were analyzed by AGAT Laboratories Ltd. for bulk and clay XRD mineralogy. The samples were examined using XRD techniques to determine mineralogical composition. In order to separate the particles less than 3 m in size (clay fraction) from the bulk fraction, the samples were treated in an ultrasonic bath using sodium metaphosphate as a deflocculating agent. The materials were then centrifuged at different speeds, which separate the clay fraction from the bulk materials. The weight fraction was measured for both bulk and clay portions of the samples. Sample# 01 (7.10-7.15m), 02(4.58-4.68m) and 04(0.80-0.82m): The combined bulk and clay XRD results (Table 1) indicate that the samples consist mainly of smectite (19% to 40%) [samples 1, 2 & 4 best fit saponite Fe-rich, calcium magnesium aluminum silicate hydroxide hydrate Ca 0.5 (MgFe) 3 (SiAl) 4 O 10 (OH) 2.nH 2 O], with lesser amounts of illite (10% to 31%) [potassium aluminum silicate hydroxide, KAl 2 (OH) 2 (AlSi 3 (O,OH) 10 )], biotite (11% to 30%) [K(Mg,Fe)3AlSi3O10(F,OH)2] and calcite (3% to 15%) [calcium carbonate, (CaCO 3 )]. In addition minor amounts of chlorite (7% to 10%) (iron, magnesium aluminum silicate, (Mg,Fe) 5 Al(AlSi 3 )O 10 (OH) 9 ), hornblende (10%, sample 2 only) [(Ca,Na) 2 3(Mg,Fe,Al) 5 (Al,Si) 8 O 22 (OH,F) 2 ], quartz (3% to 5%) [silicon dioxide, SiO 2 ], plagioclase feldspar (2% to 5%) [calcium sodium aluminum silicate, (Ca, Na)(Si,Al) 4 O 8 ], dolomite (2% to 5%) [magnesium calcium carbonate, CaMg(CO 3 ) 2 ], plus trace siderite (sample 4 only ) (iron carbonate, FeCO 3 ) were also identified.
A Tetra Tech Company. Work Order No. A16479 Combined XRD Analysis August, 2013 The clay fraction (<3μm) weight ranges from 9.29% to 27.32% of the total rock volume. The clay fraction XRD (Table 1) results indicate that the samples consist mainly of smectite (saponite) (80% to 95%). Minor amounts of illite (3% to 12%), chlorite (2% to 6%), siderite (1%, sample 4 only), dolomite (1%, sample 2 & 4 only) and calcite (1%, sample 2 only). The analyses indicate that these samples consist mainly of clays/weathered igneous or basaltic rock/silts (smectite, illite, chlorite, quartz and plagioclase feldspar). Additionally, minor carbonates (calcite, dolomite and trace siderite, sample 4 only precipitated from ground water?). Biotite (sample all) and hornblende (sample 2 only) weathered igneous our basaltic rock?. The significant amounts of freshwater sensitive smectitic clays (Fe-rich saponite) detected in these samples indicate that water sensitivity swelling of clays are significant in these weathered regolith rocks/shale. Sample# 03 (2.45-2.50m): The combined bulk and clay XRD results (Table 1) indicate that the samples consist mainly of illite (37%) [potassium aluminum silicate hydroxide, KAl 2 (OH) 2 (AlSi 3 (O,OH) 10 )], with lesser amounts of smectite (19%) [best fit sodium rich montmorillonite sodium magnesium aluminum silicate, Na 0.3 (AlMg) 2 Si 4 O 10 OH 2!6H 2 O]. Minor amounts of siderite (10%) (iron carbonate, FeCO 3 ), biotite (9%) [K(Mg,Fe)3AlSi3O10(F,OH)2], dolomite (8%) [magnesium calcium carbonate, CaMg(CO 3 ) 2 ], quartz (6%) [silicon dioxide, SiO 2 ], chlorite (6%) (iron, magnesium aluminum silicate, (Mg,Fe) 5 Al(AlSi 3 )O 10 (OH) 9 ), plagioclase feldspar (3%) [calcium sodium aluminum silicate, (Ca, Na)(Si,Al) 4 O 8 ], pyrite (2%) [iron sulfide, FeS 2 ] were also identified.
A Tetra Tech Company. Work Order No. A16479 Combined XRD Analysis August, 2013 The clay fraction (<3μm) weight is 6.77% of the total rock volume. The clay fraction XRD (Table 1) results indicate that the sample consist mainly of smectite (montmorillonite) - (77%). Minor amounts of illite (12%), chlorite (5%), pyrite (2%), dolomite (2%) and plagioclase feldspar (2%) were also detected. The analyses indicate that these samples consist mainly of clays/weathered igneous or basaltic rock/silts (smectite, illite, chlorite, quartz and plagioclase feldspar). Additionally, minor carbonates (dolomite and siderite precipitated from ground water?) and biotite (weathered igneous rock?). The montmorillonite smectite in sample 3 (2.45-2.50m) will be especially prone to swell in presence of freshwater.

APPENDIX BULK & CLAY PROCEDURES 1. Crush dry rock sample until grains disintegrate completely. 2. Weigh empty beaker and put sample in it. Weigh again total weight. ( 3g of sample). 3. Add 50 ml of distilled water, plus a few drops of Sodium Metaphosphate. 4. Put in ultrasonic bath for 2 (two) hours. 5. Stir sample and pour out top portion into test tube. 6. Centrifuge for 5 minutes at 600 rpm. 7. Pour out top portion into another test tube for the clay fraction (<3µm) sample. 8. Recombine the coarser residue in the first test tube with the residue in the beaker and weight this bulk sample (after drying completely). Subtract this weight from the total weight to get the clay fraction weight. 9. Centrifuge the clay fines in the second test tube for 20 minutes at maximum rpms. 10. Pour out most of the water then shake test tube using Vortex Mixer. 11. Pipette onto a glass slide. 12. Put the slide on the hot plate (low) until dry then run sample in XRD. 13. Then put slide in a glycol vapour bath overnight (glycolated clay); Smectite will swell and be recognized. 14. If chlorite suspected, then treat the remaining sample in the test tube with diluted HCl and leave overnight (acidized clay). If chlorite was present in the sample this test causes it to disappear. 15. Run the clay fraction slide from 2-38 degrees. 16. Grind the bulk sample and spread the powder on an aluminum holder then run from 4-58 degrees.
