Text: Physics, by Cutnell and Johnson, 11th ed. (older editions are also ok, but you will need a standalone copy of WileyPlus) Chapters 1-14 will be covered Registration code for WileyPlus Lab manual: PHYS 1020 lab manual smart phone, tablet, laptop, (or i<clicker remote)

Introduction to iclicker polling Participate in iclicker polls using a smart phone (or tablet or laptop) or with an iclicker It is not necessary to purchase a remote or an app iclicker scores are integrated with UM Learn

Registering iclicker for this course Go to PHYS 1020 A01 on UM Learn Go to Content Go to module iclicker Click on iclicker Reef you will be sent to reef sign-in page Click on Sign Up

Create an account Make sure you select University of Manitoba for your institution

Create an Account Use your U of M email and 7-digit student id. Otherwise your grades won t synch with UM Learn.

Create an Account Choose password

Create an Account Your account is created. Now you need to find course Sign in You should also get a welcome email from Reef.

iclicker remotes may be still be used When creating account, register your remote

Select this course After signing in, go to courses and select your course and section Phys1020 section A01 You may have to search.

You don t have to pay! U of M is paying this year.

Join class session Every class, after the session starts Vote in multiple choice polls Example screen shot during poll.

Using remote? Change Your Frequency We are using a different frequency than the default for this class. The frequency we are using is??. At the beginning of each class: Hold your On/Off button for 2 seconds (the blue Power Light will flash) Enter the frequency Your Vote Status light will turn green after you ve entered this new frequency. Your frequency is now changed for the duration of the lecture & you may vote.

Go to IST for support: http://umanitoba.ca/ computing/ist/help/ I am not your IT person. They know more. Also go to iclicker.com Image copyright Disney

iclicker: Marking scheme Your iclicker answers will count for 4% of your final grade. Each class, if you answer 75% of the questions, you get 1 mark to indicate you are present. In addition, for every question you attempt, you get 1 mark. 1 further mark is awarded for every correct answer.

iclicker: Marking scheme Most lectures will have two or more questions. Scores may be renormalized to give all lectures the same weight, and the best 30 lectures will be used. Therefore, the score in UM Learn gradebook should be considered approximate, and waivers for missed lectures will not be granted.

Who will win the Banjo Bowl? (a) Bombers by a touchdown (b) Bombers by a field goal (c) Riders by a touchdown (d) Riders, but with Bombers in spitting distance (e) The banjo what?

Homework Read course notes and textbook. Lecture notes will be posted on-line before they are used, without clicker questions, and updated later with clicker questions. Wiley Plus on-line problems will be assigned regularly. These are graded! A problem from the text may be assigned at the end of some lectures. These will be solved in the following lecture. They are not for credit.

WileyPlus Registration instructions: Go to www.wileyplus.com/class/661150, also linked from the course web site, to log in or create an account. See Juliette Mammei if you have problems.

A practice math skills WileyPlus assignment is already available. For-credit assignments will appear soon. Watch the course web site (or the WileyPLUS web site).

Evaluation lab reports (5) 20% tutorial tests (4) 10% WileyPlus 6% i>clickers 4% midterm test 15% final exam 45% Students who have taken PHYS 1020 previously may apply for a lab exemption provided they exceeded 80% in the lab in the last 2 years. Apply to Physics Office rm. 301 Allen. Even with a lab exemption you still must write the tutorial tests!
