Abstract In this note, we show that the values of integrals of the log-tangent function with respect to any square-integrable function on [, ] may be determined or approximated by an infinite or finite sum involving the Riemann Zeta-function at odd positive integers. Key Words: Riemann Zeta function, Apéry s constant, Catalan s constant, Summation formula, Log-tangent integrals, Finite Infinite series. Mathematics Subject Classification s: M6, 6D5, L3. Introduction preliminaries The Riemann Zeta-function, denoted ζ, is defined by ζs := The sum ζs is absolutely convergent for any complex number in the half-plane Rs > is analytic on this half-plane. In particular, if s is a positive integer greater than it is well-known that k s. ζs = n = n n B n n n! n N, E-mail:lahoumaths@gmail.com E-mail: guennoun@fsr.ac.ma
where B n denotes the n-th Bernoulli number. Here in the following, let R N be the sets of real numbers positive integers, respectively, let N = N {}. For the odd numbers, i.e. s = n +, no closed forms have been proven yet. However, it has been conjectured by Kohnen [4] that the ratios of the quantities ζn+ are n+ transcendental for every integer n N. Apéry s constant is defined as the number ζ3 =.5693595948539973865449997649869... It was named for the French mathematician Roger Apéry who proved in 978 [] that it is irrational; Apéry s theorem. However, it is still not known whether Apéry s constant is transcendental. Recently, T. Rivoal [6] W. Zudilin [] have shown, respectively, that infinitely many of the numbers ζn+ must be irrational, that at least one of the eight numbers ζn + n =,, 9 must be irrational. Of course, several series integrals involving the numbers ζn +, with n, have been shown; see, for example, [, 6, 8, 9,,, 8, 9, ]. As we notice, almost all these results were obtained by evaluation of log-sine integrals its related functions. In fact, the log-sine integrals were firstly introduced by Euler in 769 he showed in 77 [3] that x log sin x dx = 7 ζ3 log ; 6 8 by exploiting this integral, Euler gave the famous series representation of Apéry s constant as follows: ζ3 = 7 ζn n. n + n + Notice that there are many other classical series representation of Apéry s constant. The higher moments were studied differently by several authors see, for example, [5]. Furthermore, many families of log-sine log-cosine integrals were evaluated explicitly by Choi Srivastava; see [7] []. In this note, we shall study integrals involving the log-tangent function for a certain class of functions f defined on the interval [, ] ; namely Lf := fx log tan x dx. Moreover, we show that these integrals for some class of functions may be approximated by a series of terms involving the numbers ζn +, with n N. In fact, the integral in exists whenever the function belongs to L [, ] by Cauchy-Schwarz inequality we have where Lf f, f = [fx] dx; notice that the constant on the right-h side of inequality above follows from the quantity [3, eq. 5, p. 533] log tan x dx = 4. Lahoucine ELAISSAOUI Zine El-Abidine GUENNOUN
Also, if f is bounded on [, ] then we have where G is Catalan s constant, Lf G f, 4 G = log tan x dx = k k +, k is the supremum norm. Notice that, the table [3] contains explicit evaluations of the integral in for some trigonometric functions f see p. 533-59. However, the case when f is polynomial, which is strongly connected with the numbers ζn +, is not treated; for example, if fx = x fx = x we have the following Proposition.. Apéry s constant can be represented by x log tan x dx = 7 8 ζ3 x log tan x dx = 7 6 ζ3. Proof. Bradley showed in [4, Th.] that for x [, ] x log tan u du = n= sin n + x n + ; 3 notice that, the series in the right-h side is absolutely convergent for all x R. Then [ x ] log tan u du dx = n + n 3. We apply integration by parts for the integral in the left-h side, we obtain Since, for all s >, then [ x ] log tan u du dx = x log tan x dx. n n + s = s ζs x log tan x dx = 7 8 ζ3. Similar reasoning, using the Fourier expansion 3, yields [ x x ] log tan x dx = x log tan u du dx = 7 6 ζ3. The next section contains the evaluation of integrals LP for any given polynomial P. Thereby, we will deduce that any square-integrable function may be approximated or determined by a sum involving ζn +. We conclude, in the last section, with a brief discussion of corresponding results with some additional remarks. Lahoucine ELAISSAOUI 3 Zine El-Abidine GUENNOUN
Evaluation of the integral L for polynomial functions Let us start with the following Lemma. For any positive integer k we have coskx log tan x dx = { if k is even k if k is odd. Proof. If k = n, then cos4nx log tan x dx = Therefore, = cos 4n x log tan x dx cos4nx log tan x dx. cos4nx log tan x dx =. Now, for k = n +, using integration by parts the Fourier expansion 3, we have [ x ] coskx log tan x dx = n + sin n + x log tan u du dx which completes the proof. = n + = n + ; m= m + [cos 4m nx cos 4m + nx] dx Now, we shall generalize results of Proposition. for higher moments, namely x n log tan x dx, n N. For this fact, let us briefly recall some properties of Euler polynomials, denoted E n. It is well-known that Euler polynomials are defined on the unit interval [, ] they are Appell sequences. Moreover, Euler polynomials E n x are defined by the following generating function e tx e t + = E n x tn, t <. 4 n! n Of course, the polynomials E n have several interesting properties, the most important to us are given below: Symmetry; for all x in [, ] E n x = n E n x, n N. 5 Inversion; every monomial x n may be expressed in terms of E n x, namely x n = E n x + n n E k x. 6 k k= for every integer n > for all x [, ]. Translation; for all x [, ] a given real y we have n n E n x + y = E k xy n k. 7 k k= The Fourier series form for the Euler polynomials for a positive integer n : E n x = 4 n n! n C n x 8 E n = 4 n n! n S n x, for all x in the unit interval; the functions C n S n are defined by C n x := k cos k + x k + n S n x := k sin k + x k + n+. Now, we can easily prove the following Theorem. Let n be a positive integer, then E n x log tan x dx = E n x log tan x dx = n n! n n ζn +. 9 Proof. The first integral is immediate from the property 5. For the second integral we use formula 8, hence E n x log tan x dx = 4 n n! n = 4 n n! n k= C n x log tan x dx k + n Then Lemma completes the proof of Theorem, namely cos k + x log tan x dx. E n x log tan x dx = n n! n = n n! n k + n+ k= n+ ζn +. Notice that, we can deduce from formula 9, for any integer n, that 4 E n x log tan x dx = n n! n n+ ζn +. Moreover, the inversion formula 6 implies the following Lahoucine ELAISSAOUI 5 Zine El-Abidine GUENNOUN
Corollary. Let n be a positive integer, then we have x n log tan x dx = n n! n n+ ζn + δn where is the floor function + n! n k n k+ n n k +! δn := { if n is odd if n is even. One can also use the translation property 7 to show that Corollary. For any positive integer n a given real y, E n x + y log tan x dx = n! n E n x + y log tan x dx = n! k k n k+ ζk +, k+ ζk+ k k k+ ζk+ y n k+ n k +!, y n k n k!. Actually, we can extract more identites involving the integrals LE n by using other formulas for Euler polynomials. Moreover, similar reasoning to that used to obtain the results above is applicable for other similar polynomials such as the Bernoulli polynomials. Of course, Corollary permits us to evaluate more integrals LP for any given polynomial P; an explicit evaluation of LP for a polynomial P is given in the following Theorem. Let P be polynomial of degree m N. Then Px log tan x dx = m+ k k where P p α denotes the p-th derivative of P at the point α. Proof. It is easy to show, using integration by parts, that P x sin n + x dx = P + P n + n + Thus by induction we obtain P x sin n + x dx = Since, by formula 3, LP = = n= m+ [ ] P k + P k k+ ζk+. k k [ x P x n + P 3 x sin n + x dx. [ ] P k + P k n + k. ] log tan u du dx P x sin n + x dx; Lahoucine ELAISSAOUI 6 Zine El-Abidine GUENNOUN
then LP = m+ Thereby, the fact that completes the proof. k k n= [ ] P k + P k n + n= k+. n + k+ = k+ ζk + There are many applications of Theorem, the most interesting one is that it allows to exp the log-tangent function in a series of orthogonal polynomials corresponding to Hilbert space L, with the inner product fxgxdx, f, g L,. f, g := We define on [, ] the shifted Legendre polynomials Pn P n x := n n! n d n dx n n n ] [x n x. using Rodrigues formula Indeed, the shifting function x 4 x bijectively maps the interval [, ] to the interval [, ] in which the ordinary Legendre polynomials P n are defined see for example [7] for more details about Legendre polynomials. Therefore, the shifted Legendre polynomials form an orthogonal basis in L, we have P n, P m = { n+ if n = m, if n m. Notice that the polynomials P n satisfy two following properties For any given integer n all x [, ] we have P n x = n Pn x. An explicit representation is given by P n n x = n n n + k k x k. k k k= The last property implies that the m-th derivative of the shifted Legendre polynomials is n n n + k k P n m x = n m! k x k m ; k k m k=m thereby, for any integer m n we have m P n m = n+m n + m! m!n m!. { } Consequently, the coefficients of the log-tangent function in the orthogonal basis Pn of Hilbert space L, are given in the following n Lahoucine ELAISSAOUI 7 Zine El-Abidine GUENNOUN
Corollary 3. For any positive integer n, we have L Pn =, L Pn = n k n + k! k k!n k! k+ ζk +. Proof. The first integral follows directly, using integration by substitution, utilizing property. The second integral follows by applying Theorem the fact that P k n = k k P n = n + k! k!n k!. Notice that the first the second equalities follow respectively from. Furthermore, it is well-known that every element of Hilbert space L can be written in a unique way as a sum of multiples of these base elements. Namely, for our case, where f L, c n f = f, P n P n = n + Moreover, we have Parseval s identity f = n= f = c n f P n, n= c n f n +. fx P n xdx. The equality implies that log-tangent function belongs to Hilbert space L, ; hence, we deduce the following results Corollary 4. We have, log tan x L, = 4n L Pn Pn x, [ ] 4 4n L Pn =. We should not forget to mention that log-tangent function is also defined by the series [3,.58, eq. 3, p. 53] log tan x = log x + k x k ζk, x,. k Therefore, one can extract more series representations involving the numbers ζn + by combining the different results obtained in this paper with the series above. Moreover, one can use the log-tangent expansion showed in Corollary 4 to prove Lahoucine ELAISSAOUI 8 Zine El-Abidine GUENNOUN
several identities involving the numbers ζn + other constants. For example, a series representaion of Catalan s constant 4 G = = = log tan x dx 4n L Pn n 4n n n n n 4 L P n xdx Pn. Notice that the evaluation of the integral in the second line is due to Byerly [5, p.7], namely in particular 4 P x P n xdx = n n! n n!n! = n n n. n n On the other h, any function f L [, ] may be exped in terms of shifted Legendre polynomials it may be approximated by its partial sum f N = c n f P n, n= for a sufficiently large integer N. Hence, the integral Lf, for any square-integrable function on [, ], may be approximated by the partial sum LfN which depends on the numbers ζn +, with n. Namely we have the following Corollary 5. For any square-integrable function f on,, there exists a sequence of real numbers {c N,k f}, where N > is a sufficiently large integer k =,, N, such that Futhermore, Then Lf = lim N + c N,k f k k k+ ζk +. c N,k f = 4j f, P j + k! j k!j k!. j=k Proof. Let f be a square-integrable function, then f may be exped as fx := j + f, P j P j x. Lf = f, log tan = 4j f, P j L Pj j= = lim 4j f, P j L Pj N j= = lim N j 4j f, P j k j + k! N j= k k!j k! = lim 4j f, P j + k! j N k!j k! j=k j= k k k+ ζk + k+ ζk +. Lahoucine ELAISSAOUI 9 Zine El-Abidine GUENNOUN
Therefore Lf = lim N + c N,k f k k k+ ζk +. Notice that the convergence of the sum c N,k f k k k+ ζk + is not always uniform; however Corollary 5 provide us a good approximation. For example, the expansion of the function fx = x for N = 5 is f 5 x = P x + 3 5 P x 5 P x + 35 P 3 x 693 P 4 x + 87 P 5 x; then, after a simplification, we find Lf 5 = 4 3 58 3335 ζ3 3 ζ5 + 3 4 ζ7.68884888869488... However, using Mathematica we find that Lf := x log tan x dx.68947. Actually, L is a linear functional on L, then L is surjective onto the scalar field R. Consequently we obtain the following density result Corollary 6. For any real number α there exist a sequences of real numbers {c N,k }; where N N k =,, N, such that α = lim N + c N,k k k k+ ζk +. We should not forget to mention that a similar result above has been showed by Alkan [, Th.]. It is well-known that any continuous function f on [, ] is integrable squareintegrable. Therefore, one can use a similar manipulation to evaluate the integral Lf. Moreover, the Weierstrass approximation theorem Theorem allow us to state that: for any continuous real-valued function f on [, ] there exists a sequence of real numbers {a n,k },,n, with n, such that n Lf = lim k a n,k n k+ ζk +. 3 Concluding results remarks Exploiting the different results obtained in this note, one can evaluate further integrals involving the log-tangent function with respect to some non-polynomial functions, as the following example shows: Let z be a complex number such that z < let fx, z = e zx, then by generating function formula 4 Theorem we obtain Lahoucine ELAISSAOUI Zine El-Abidine GUENNOUN
Moreover, since e zx log tan x dx = then for all z <, = e z + = e z + e zx log tan x dx = e xz log tan x dx n z n n= n! = e z n E n x log tan x dx n+ ζn + z n. e z x log tan x dx e zx log tan x dx, sinh xz z log tan x dx = cosh z n n+ ζn+z n. Also, we have [ e izx + e ixz] log tan x dx cos xz log tan x dx = = sin z n+ ζn + z n, [ on the other h, using Lemma sine identity sina sinb = cos a b one can show that ] cos a+b, [ ] sin z + z z cos xz log tan x dx = ψ + ψ ψ, 4z where ψ is the digamma function ψ = γ log ; here γ.577... is the Euler-Mascheroni constant. We would like to mention that the partial sum S N z := n+ ζn + z n converges very quickly to the function Fz := 4z [ ψ +z ] + ψ z ψ for every complex z <. More generally, using a similar reasoning as in the proof of Theorem one can evaluate the integral L for a particular class of functions. In fact, let f be a smooth -real or complex valued- function defined on [, ] such that Then we have b k := sup x f k x = o k, as k. fx log tan x dx = k k [ ] f k + f k k ζk+. Lahoucine ELAISSAOUI Zine El-Abidine GUENNOUN
Or, alternatively, for a given z, fzx log tan x dx = k k ] [f k + f k z k ζk+z k. It should be noted that the coefficients L Pn obtained in Corollary 3 converge very quickly to as n +. Furthermore, the partial sum n 4n n n n L Pn, n converges very quickly to Catalan s constant as well; for instance, for N = n 4n n n L Pn =.946683... G.3539 3. n n Finally, we would like to note that several integrals given earlier may play an important role, in number theory, in regard to the proof or disproof of the algebraicity of numbers in the form ζn+. In addition, the constants ζn+ arise naturally in a n+ number of physical mathematical problems. For instance, in physics, they appear in correlation functions of antiferromagnetic xxx spin chain when evaluating the n-dimensional form of the Stefan-Boltzmann law.
