Overview on Foreign Trade Statistics DNS The foreign trade statistics covers exports and imports registered at the custom s stations in Port in Mogadishu. As International standard the imports are must valued on C.I.F. basis, which represent the value of goods, insurance and freight at port of destination as well as the Exports are also valued on F.O.B basis, which exclude the value of insurance and freight.however, in our context the custom were not have any value costs but they usual record as follows: Commodity code Item name Unit measurement Quantity Taxes of each item imposed Total price of the Taxes In the light of the above, the custom department are planning to make all efforts to have imports and exports data in systematic manner, by obtaining from the business companies each and every value costs of the all commodities imported and exported. The directorate of national statistics currently have available data on export and import 1st January 2013 31st December 2016 in excel sheet. Source of Data The main source of foreign trade statistics are compiled in accordance with custom system, that are usually collecting the import and export commodities by quantity without value costs but also they are recording the taxes value imposed each commodities arrived in Mogadishu port. Timing of Recording Imported and exported goods are recorded at the time they enter or leave the country. For customs based data, the time of recording is the date of lodgement of the customs declaration. The division of economic statistics in particular the section of foreign trade statistics are collecting on regular bases from the custom department in Mogadishu and recording in our own system in excel sheet. We are planning to publish the import and export data in our Mopic website. Commodity Classification Mogadishu Custom data are classified according to their own Harmonised Commodity system by indicating the description of the items, Commodity Coding System approved by Customs. Moreover, they are 25 commodity classifications used by the custom for their import and export enters or leaves the country. Source: Custom department- Port in Mogadishu. 2

The custom will plan to obtain all value costs from the business people in order to calculate all merchandises enter and leaves from the port Mogadishu. 6

The directorate also plan to develop and adopt the international standard with harmonized commodity code and classification of the commodities as well in the near future with the help of IMF etc Challenges Lack of Both the Harmonised System and the Standard International Trade Classification (SITC) Revision 4. Limited knowledge both DNS and custom department for foreign trade statistics Recommendation To accelerate the capacity building of the Foreign trade both the staff of DNS and Custom department staff in order to improve our system of collecting, analysing and interpretation of the data on import and export as well and to be in same page of the foreign trade statistics. To develop Harmonised System the Standard International Trade Classification (SITC) Revision 4 both DNS and custom department so as to produce quality report and accurate data to our users. To provide us both the DNS and Custom department if necessary system software which entering the data of custom and analysis all data obtained.
