Second circular 10 th January 2018 International Conference on Ediacaran and Cambrian Sciences Joint Meeting of Ediacaran and Cambrian Subcommissions 12 th -16 th August 2018, Xi an, China Xi an, the eternal city, records the great changes of the Chinese nation just like a living history book. Called Chang'an in ancient times, Xi an is one of the birthplaces of the ancient civilization in the Yellow River Basin area of the country. During Xi an's 3,100 year development, 13 dynasties such as Western Zhou (11th century BC - 771 BC), Qin (221 BC - 206 BC), Western Han (206 BC - 24 AD)... Two and a half days topic sessions will focus on Neoproterozoic-Cambrian life and environments. Two pre-conference and two post-conference field excursions will be arranged (see maps below), and the cost is provided seperately in the introduction of each field trip. A half day mid-conference tour to Terra Cotta Warrior will be organized. Trip 1: Pre-conference, arrival on 10 th August, visiting sections 2016 during 11 th and 12 th August, coming back to Xi an around at 18:00 on 12 th August Precambrian-Cambrian transition in the southern margin of North China This pre-conference field trip will depart from and come back to Northwest University Hotel (conference site), Xi an, China, and take 5-20 participants. Two major sections, Longxian and Luonan, will be visited, which encompass the sequences from the Cryogenian through Ediacaran up to Cambrian. Specific interests include the Luoquan diamictite and Small shelly fossils of North China aspects. The field trip will be led by Xingliang Zhang, Luoyang Li, and Hao Yun. The cost will be 1600RMB/240USD (double occupancy) or 2000RMB/300USD (single occupancy), covering transportation, meals and rooms (two nights, 10 th and 11 th August 2018). Luoquan Diamictite, probably Cryogenian in age, is well exposed in the Shangzhangwan section, close to Luonan Town, ca. 120 km east to Xi an Small Shelly Fossils North China-type The Xinji bioclastic limestone, Cambrian Series 2 in age, yields diverse of small shelly fossils with primary microstructures preserved. The locality is close to Longxian Town, ca. 240 km northwestern to Xi an. 2

Trip 2: Pre-conference, arrival in Yichang on 9 th August, visiting 2016 sections during 10 th and 11 th August, travel to Xi an on 12 th August 2018 From Snowball Earth to Cambrian explosion: Rocks and fossils in the Yangtze-Gorge area This pre-conference trip will start from Yichang (Hubei Province) and end in Northwest University Hotel (conference site), Xi an, China, and take 5 to 20 participants. Examine Cryogenian, Ediacaran, and early Cambrian sections in the Yangtze Gorges area. Specific interests include the Cryogenian Nantuo diamictite and the overlying cap dolostone, stratigraphy of the Ediacaran Doushantuo and Dengying formations, the Shibantan biota fossil assemblage of the Ediacara biota, the early Cambrian strata (Yanjiahe, Shuijingtuo, Shipai and Tianheban and Shilongdong formations, in ascending order) and fossils (small shelly fossils, trilobites, brachiopods, archaeocyaths in this region). Hiemalora pleiomorpha from the late Ediacaran Shibantan biota in carbonate facies. The trip will be led by Chuanming Zhou (Nanjing Institute of Geology & Palaeontology, CAS), Shuhai Xiao (Virginia Tech), Zhifei Zhang (Northwest University), and Guoxiang Li (Nanjing Institute of Geology & Palaeontology, CAS). The cost will be 3300RMB/500USD (double occupancy) or 4300RMB/650 USD (single occupancy), covering transportation, meals, rooms (three nights, 9 th to 11 th August 2018), and travel from Yichang to Xi an on 12 th August 2018. Trip 3: Post-conference, departure from Xi an on 16 th August, 2016 visiting sections during 17 th to 19 th, coming back to Xi an on 20 th August 2018 Precambrian-Cambrian transition in the northern margin of South China This post-conference field trip will depart from and come back to Northwest University Hotel (conference site), Xi an, China, and take 5-20 participants. Six major sections will be visited, which encompass the sequences from Cryogenian through Ediacaran up to lower Cambrian. Phosphatized meiofauna from the lowest Cambrian Interesting sites are many, including localities of Weng an-type fossils, Gaojiashan biota, phosphatized meiofauna, oldest trilobite of China... The field trip will be led by Yaoping Cai, Tao Dai, Jian Han, Guoxiang Li, Zhifei Zhang, Xingliang Zhang, and Yuan Zhang. The cost will be 4000RMB/600USD (double occupancy) or 5000RMB/750USD (single occupancy), covering transportation, meals and rooms (5 nights, 16 th -20 th August 2018). Trip 4: Post-conference, departure from Xi an to Guiyang on 16 th 2016 August, visiting sections during 17 th and 18 th August, departure from Guiyang to home on 19 th August 2018 Cryogenian to Cambrian successions in slope facies of the Yangtze platform This post-conference field trip will depart from Xi an and end in Guiyang, and take 5-20 participants. Three major sections will be visited, which encompass the sequences from Cryogenian through Ediacaran up to Cambrian in slope facies of the Yangtze Platform at eastern Guizhou. Specific interests include Cryogenian diamictites, GSSP candidates of Cambrian Stage 4 and Stage 5, and Burgess Shale-type Lagerstätten such as Kaili, Jianhe and Balang biotas. The field trip will be led by Yuanlong Zhao and Yuning Yang from Guizhou University. The cost will be 3500RMB/530USD (double occupancy) or 4100RMB/620USD(single occupancy), covering transportation, meals, rooms (3 nights, 16 th -18 th August 2018), and flight from Xi an to Guiyang on 16 th August 2018. Trip 2: Arrival in Yichang (Hubei Province, China) on 9 th August; visiting sections during 10 th and 11 th August by bus; travel from Yichang to Xi an (conference site) on 12 th August 2018. Trip 3: Travel from Xi an to Hanzhong by bus in the morning of 16 th August; coming back to Xi an in the evening of 20 th August; departure to home on 21 st August 2018. Trip 4: Travel from Xi an to Guiyang by flight in the morning of 16 th August; visiting section during 17 th and 18 th August; departure from Guiyang to home on 19 th August 2018. *Note: Detailed schedule and other matters will be provided only to registered participants sebsequently. Conference registration will be 660RMB/100USD for standard attendees and 400RMB/60USD for students, covering icebreaker party, buffet lunch and dinner (13 th -15 th August), conference dinner, and conference material. City tour will be 300RMB/45USD, covering transportation and entrance ticket. The cost of field trips is provided in the introduction of each trip (maximally 20 participants). The conference will be held at the Taibai Campus of Northwest University, Taibaibeilu 229, Xi an, China, or at a larger hotel, depending on the number of attendees. Details will be provided in next circular. Travel and accommodation. Xi an is well connected by air to major cities in China and the world, and has high speed train services as well. Northwest University Hotel has 120 double rooms, 30 single rooms and 5 suits. The room rate varies between 200RMB and 500RMB. Pick-up service will be provided upon requested. Invitation and visa.
