Inquiry Based Instruction Unit Virginia Kromhout
Unit Title: _Exploring the moon Grade level: _2 grade nd Subject Area: _Science Topic: The Universe Key Words: Moon, lunar surface Designed By: Virginia Kromhout Time Frame: 2 week(s) Day(s) Summary of Unit:
Standards (Represents the connection to content & process standards including benchmarks & grade level indicators) Subject: Science Grade: _2 nd Standard: Earth and Space Science, The universe 3: observe and describe that some weather changes occur throughout the day and some changes occur in a repeating season pattern._ Science as Inquiry: 6. recognize that explanations are generated in response to observations, events and phenomena. Scientific Ways of Knowing: 4. Demonstrate that in science it is helpful to work with a team and share findings with others. Categories of Understanding: Explanation: Students and teacher will provide explanations behind there thinking, and understanding of the phases. Interpretation: Students will be interpreting there pictures to discover that there are different phases of the moon and what to call them._ Application: Students will apply what they have learned so that they can explain to others the phases of the moon that they see and that the moon is different every night. Perspective: The students will gain understanding through there own perspective of seeing what the moon looks like every night and drawing conclusions form this knowledge. Self-Knowledge: The students will gain understanding through there own perspective of seeing what the moon looks like every night and drawing conclusions form this knowledge
Objective (A Statement of learning, dealing with content and process skills, goal of lesson) Objective: Students will be able to match the phases of the moon to the name. Essential Question to be Considered: What the moon looks like at night. Does the moon always look the same at night. What are the names to the different phases of the moon. Management Ideas: Accommodations & Modifications:
Discrepant Event (The Question posed, children s literature) Discrepant Event: Pose the question What does the moon look like at night? Does it always look the same? Materials: Pre-Assessment: The answers that are given when students are asked the question above. Accommodations & Modifications:
Information Gathering (Obtaining information to answer the posed question) Activity: _Students will be looking at the pictures, or descriptions that they made the night before, and explaining similarities and differences between the previous days pictures, and the pictures they saw on the website that they will look at the first day. Materials: _Projector _Website (http://tycho.usno.navy.mil/vphases.html) virtual reality moon phase picture _Book Phases of the Moon by Gillia Olson Way to Obtain Information: _Website and book listed above Technology: _Website with video and pictures, and digital camera_ Children Literature: Book Phases of the moon by Gillia Olson Resources: Web site, virtual reality moon phases pictures, and book Scientific Method: 1) Question discrepant event question 2) Research book Phases of the Moon 3) Hypothesis Students answers to the question asked 4) Procedure/method Student will go home and take pictures, write out information or draw pictures of the moon that night and will discuss there observations in class 5) Experiment Students will take pictures, draw or describe what the moon looks like at night 6) Data collection Taking pictures, writing, or drawing 7) Form a conclusion after last day of observations students will discuss all the different phases of the moon that they saw and explain that the moon dose not look the same as it did before Accommodations 8) & Modifications:
Assessment and Debriefing (Closure of lesson and insuring understanding is accomplished) Culminating Activity: _The students will be watching the NASA video and will then discuss that the phases of the moon are not just different sides, or different moons, but rather that the moon is a sphere and that the moons phases are caused by the light of the sun. My Students Understand When They are able to answer questions about the phase and the moon and can look at pictures, or hear descriptions about the moon and can tell what phases the moon is in. They will also be able to sort the phases of the moon into groups that match the phase. Assessment & Method: Students will be assess informally using question and answers during the culminating activity. They will formally be assessed using a worksheet where they will cut out the pictures of the phases of the moon and put them with the correct phase name. Accommodations & Modifications:_Students who need help with cutting will have moon phases pictures pre cut out. Students with speech articulation problems, will be able to show her understanding for the informal assessment through sign, and written response.
