https://www.flocabulary.com/scientific method/ BELLRINGER USE this to fill in the top paragraph of the notes sheet I just gave you! While Europeans were exploring and colonizing the world, other Europeans focused on making changes and advancements in science. This period of time is known as the Scientific Revolution. During the Scientific Revolution, people started to base their knowledge on reason (logic), experimentation, and observation, rather than on the traditional religious beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church. Many of the new discoveries will go against the ancient teachings of the Church. In this unit, we will talk about scientists and their discoveries, how people changed their way of thinking, and how the Church punished many for their beliefs. Sep 19 12:56 PM Time Period ANCIENT EARLY AGES 500 AD DARK MIDDLE AGES 1500AD MODERN TIMES Beliefs People based their scientific knowledge on 3 things: teachings of the Roman Catholic Church Tradition Common sense People still believed the world was flat. Very little learning takes place in the Dark Middle Ages. The feudal system determined how life was lived until the Renaissance! The Scientific Revolution happens!!! People changed their way of thinking and started to base their knowledge on: experimentation observation (what they can physically see) reason or logic they will use the scientific method to perform experiments. People knew the world was round! Sep 8 10:00 AM 1

Let's Compare some Ancient Scientists to some Modern Scientists!!! Ancient Modern Aristotle believed that Heavy objects fall faster Ptolemy developed the Geocentric theory he believed that the earth was the center of the universe. Galileo tested and proved that objects fall at the same speed regardless of weight Copernicus discovered the heliocentric theory that the sun is the center of the universe. He used Galileo's telescope to prove this! Sep 20 10:28 AM Early Science the First Scientists and Medieval Science: (pp. 110 122) During the Renaissance and, people became more interested in the world around them and developed new ways to learn about nature. The people of ancient civilizations developed science to and made many scientific advances. However, they did NOT conduct scientific or new ideas to find out whether they were true. Instead, they based their conclusions on, which led to many false beliefs and incorrect theories. Their ideas about science were based mostly on and ancient classical. During the Middle Ages, European scholars based their scientific ideas on two main sources: Most people believed that the Earth was and that the Earth stood at the of the universe. In the 1500s, Europeans began to think about science. They began to realize that scientists had to use mathematics and to make advances. This new way of thinking led to the. This revolution changed how Europeans understood and how they searched for. Sep 3 4:15 PM 2

Changes brought about by the Scientific Revolution During the Scientific Revolution, people start to use and to make decisions and perform tests to see if scientific theories were correct. The Scientific Revolution first affected, the area of science that studies the planets and stars of the universe. New discoveries in this field began to change European thinking about the. They the traditional idea that God made the Earth as the of the universe. (geocentric theory). The scientists disagreed with Ptolemy s geocentric theory and proposed a theory, stating that the was the center of the universe, not the Earth. Copernicus did not publish his findings until the end of his life because he feared punishment or from the Roman Catholic Church. Many scientists of this time who developed theories that disagreed with Church teachings were punished. Galileo Galilei was one scientists from the early parts of the Scientific Revolution that was punished by the Church. The was created by Francis Bacon as an orderly way to test scientific theories to determine if they are correct or incorrect. Fill in the Chart with information about Galileo and Newton as I present the information: GALILEO ISAAC NEWTON Sep 3 4:18 PM Galileo Galilei Galileo is famous for building an improved telescope. With it he was able to prove his heliocentric theory (sun centered universe). Galileo also proved that objects fall at the same speed regardless of weight. He published his findings, and the Church claimed his ideas as anti church. Church placed him under house arrest for the rest of his life an excommunicated him from the Roman Catholic Church, but he continued to work on his theories in secret. http://www.brainpop.com/science/famousscientists/galileogalilei/ http://www.brainpop.com/technology/scienceandindustry/telescopes/ Sep 10 11:07 AM 3

Sep 10 11:16 AM Isaac Newton He used reason and the scientific method to discover universal laws of motion. The most important law he introduced was the Law of Gravity. I explains planets oval orbits, why objects fall to the earth, and how all objects are attracted to other objects. He also defined the 3 laws of planetary motion, and was first scientist ever to be knighted by the king of England. http://www.brainpop.com/science/famousscientists/isaacnewton/ http://www.brainpop.com/science/motionsforcesandtime/gravity/ http://www.brainpop.com/science/motionsforcesandtime/newtonslawsofmotion/ Sep 10 11:17 AM 4

Johannes Kepler Isaac Newton Andreas Vesalius William Harvey Robert Hooke Robert Boyle planets move in ellipses, or oval paths, rather than circular paths gravity; laws of motion; calculus dissected human bodies to create a detailed account of what it looked like proved that blood flows through the human body and that the heart pumps blood discovered cells proved that all substances are made up of basic elements and that air is made of gases Antoine Lavoisier Rene Descartes Francis Bacon Louis Pasteur Albert Einstein proved that materials need oxygen to burn scientific thinker that believed mathematics to be the sources of all scientific knowledge. Used logic to find truths. created the scientific method as an orderly way to collect and analyze evidence to prove scientific theories as facts discovered bacteria and germs and proved that they cause disease. Found a way to removed harmful bacteria from milk (pasteurization) E=Mc 2 (equation used to create the atomic bomb) created the theory of relativity which stated that space and time were relative and changing Sep 20 10:33 AM 1 The Scientific Revolution was a time period from the 1500-1800s where changes were made in industry. A Scientists start to make decisions based on religion and the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. B Scientists started to question knowledge and use experimentation, observation, and reason to make scientific decisions. C Scientists start to use common sense to make decisions. D Scientists start to base their knowledge on tradition.
