The INSPIRE Directive A framework directive to lay down general rules aimed at the establishment of the Infrastructure for Spatial Information in the European Community. Primary purpose of the directive is to provide relevant spatial information in support of Community environmental policies. The European infrastructure will be built upon National SDIs. Page 11
INSPIRE themes Annex 1 & 2 1. Coordinate reference systems 2. Geographical grid systems 3. Geographical names 4. Administrative units 5. Addresses 6. Cadastral parcels 7. Transport networks 8. Hydrography 9. Protected sites 1. Elevation 2. Land cover 3. Orthoimagery 4. Geology Page 12

INSPIRE Implementing Rules The (framework) directive will be implemented through the formal agreement of implementing rules covering: Metadata Interoperability (specifications) Network services Data sharing agreements Built on appropriate International (ISO), European (CEN) and OGC standards Page 14
Implementing rule - Metadata Conformity of the datasets to the INSPIRE specifications Conditions applying to the access to and use of the data Quality of the data Responsible authority for the data Page 15
Implementing rule Interoperability of data and services Specifications for each of the themes Adopt/adapt existing specifications supplied by SDICs/LMOs Develop new specifications Balance costs (feasibility) & benefits Page 16
Implementing rule Network services Discovery services to allow searching for spatial data View services to display, navigate, zoom or overlay Download services to download or access datasets Transformation services to transform local/national data to Europe specifications Services allowing spatial data services to be invoked Page 17
Implementing rule Data sharing Sharing of data between public authorities Provide the institutions and bodies of the Community with access to datasets and services under harmonised conditions Sustainable financing that respects different business models Page 18
