TRAINING SYLLABUS NON-LICENSED WORK WITH ASBESTOS Non-licensed Work with Asbestos Training This unit has eleven learning outcomes. 1. Recognise why asbestos is dangerous a) Identify the properties of asbestos and its effects on health, including the increased risk of lung cancer for asbestos workers who smoke b) Identify those who are at the most risk from asbestos disease, including secondary exposure c) State how asbestos is produced d) Identify the fatal types of asbestos disease e) Identify that the main risk of asbestos is from inhalation of airborne asbestos fibres f) Identify the part/s of the body affected by Mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer. g) State the latency (delay period) period for asbestos disease 2. Know the different types of asbestos and their properties a) Identify the common types of asbestos by colour, nature and name [Chrysotile (white), Amosite (brown), Crocidolite (blue)] b) State when Crocidolite, Amosite and other amphibole fibres were banned in the UK c) State when Chrysotile was banned in the UK d) State how many different types of asbestos minerals there are and their risks to health.

Outline of Course Content This course provides the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to persons who will knowingly disturb asbestos containing materials during the course of their work activities, including building maintenance workers and supervisory personnel, and building maintenance managers. Successful completion of the course will allow candidates to undertake asbestos non licensed works in accordance with the Control of Asbestos regulations 2012 and all associated Codes of practice Training is in accordance with Regulation 10 of Work with materials containing asbestos, Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, Approved Code of Practice and guidance (L143) and Equipment and Methods Sheet EM2 of Asbestos essentials: A task manual for building, maintenance and allied trades on non-licensed asbestos work (Second edition) (HSG210) Outline of Proposed Learning Activities / Approach to Delivery The training will cover the topics in appropriate detail, by means of both written and oral presentation, and by demonstration as necessary. Assessment Methods / Tasks A question and answer session will be held at the end of each module to ensure each learner has reached the necessary level of understanding. Tutor assessment of learner performance during practical sessions with continual oral feedback. A timed, invigilated, closed-book written examination will be individually completed by each learner at the end of the course, with 80% being the pass mark. Assessment Evidence Written Assessment covering LO1-LO11 Grade Descriptors 80% pass mark (pass / fail) The end of course written paper will draw at least 20 short answer and multiplechoice questions from a module-based question bank, to include no less than three questions from each module. Completed exam papers are retained by the course provider. Page 9 of 9
