Southern Hancock Snow Day Lessons Parent Information Meeting LINK TO THE PRESENTATION CAN BE FOUND AT www.todaysmeet.com/newpal

Conditions for a Snow Day All decisions regarding a snow day will be made by 6:00 am School administrators will drive roads at 4:00 am to evaluate driveability Freezing rain accumulating for icy roads, extreme windchill, and accumulating snowfall making driving conditions unsafe are all reasons for school cancellation Failed utilities are also a possibility for closing school in bad weather conditions

Devices K - 1 students have access to 16GB ipad minis 2-5 students have access to 16GB ipads 6-12 students have access to MacBook Airs Only programs and apps that have been approved for educational use are available to your student Web filtering is still active on your home network It is still important for you to monitor your child s use of the device

Device Options As a parent, you can: Allow your student to bring home the school-owned device and complete their work using home wifi Have your student access the work on your own personal device or computer using home wifi Have student bring home the school-owned device even though they will have limited or no access to wifi

What to expect The day before inclement weather, Southern Hancock administration will determine whether there is a need to send the device home If devices are going home, a call will be put out over our alert system If a snow day is called, lessons for Pre-K will have been sent home or will be posted on New Palestine Elementary s website. Grades K - 12 will have their lessons posted in Canvas Students should return to school with their devices and chargers once school resumes

Canvas All snow day lessons for grades K - 12 will be accessible through Canvas All students have Canvas accounts and should know how to login Students with ipads have the Canvas App that keeps them logged in at all times Students who do not take home a school device can access Canvas at http: //newpal.instructure.com Parents can create Observation accounts that allow them to see assigned work and what work their student has completed (account set-up works best on a computer) The Canvas App can be used by parents as well on personal devices

Care of Devices Never use liquid to clean a school-owned device The best method of cleaning is to use a soft, dry cloth Cords should be wrapped carefully so as not to break the wiring where it enters the plug Never change the settings on the school-owned device - these have been chosen for your child s safety Use bags and cases to transport the schoolowned device Do not attempt to repair the device if it breaks Parents can choose to purchase extra insurance or claim it under their homeowners insurance if they wish A help desk is available if you have an issue with your student s device

Assignments Elementary students - Assignments will be focused on review of critical skills students need for their success Secondary students - Assignments will be a continuation of material the students have been working on in class Students not completing assignments for the snow days will be marked absent from school for those days Snow day lessons should not introduce new processes for completing work We welcome parents feedback on the length of the lessons

Benefits for Students and Parents Anytime, anywhere access to information and educational materials Builds a foundation for more advanced use of technology Requires application of problem-solving skills Access to digital-age learning materials that fits the needs of today s digital learners Students love taking their device home like the big kids First-hand experience with how devices are used in classrooms No more juggling family vacations due to makeup days No more pulling children out of school due to previous plans Education can continue during poor weather in the safety of your home Graduation date is less likely to change

Help Desk and Teacher Office Hours Teachers will hold office hours: 10:00 am-11:00 am and 7:00 pm-8:00 pm Help Desk Support Line Information 8:00 am-8:00 pm MacBook: 317-620-1794 ipad: 317-620-1743 General Support: 317-620-1718
