Overview of past procurement of Solar Direct Drive (SDD) refrigeration systems and UNICEF SD support in Cold Chain 1
UNICEF Supply Does Make a Difference The overall objectives include: Shorten procurement and production process (at least by one month) by establishing Long Term Arrangements Ensuring an uninterrupted sustainable supply of affordable quality products. UNICEF has been part of the SolarChill partnership and procured the first two SDD systems for testing in 2007. As of today, UNICEF has procured 1,841 SDD systems for 24 different countries. 2
Key Drivers of SDD adoption New vaccine introduction Innovation controlled environment, less recurrent cost implications and reduced maintenance needs Sustainability - Increased interest and demand for sustainable products move towards solar direct drive Emerging Market - Global Partner engagement 3

Almost 10 weeks of Remote Temperature monitoring Each unit was fitted with a cable sensor placed as near as possible to the center of the refrigeration compartment. In parallel, monitoring of the Ambient temperature in the tent. (Min/Max temperatures inside the tent +5.4ºC /37.5ºC. A drastic drop in temp. and Irradiation is expected soon, which will fall outside the working Ambient temperature for most units, (Between 5ºC and 43ºC). Monitoring will continue as long as the weather conditions allow. 31
