Overview of past procurement of Solar Direct Drive (SDD) refrigeration systems and UNICEF SD support in Cold Chain 1

UNICEF Supply Does Make a Difference The overall objectives include: Shorten procurement and production process (at least by one month) by establishing Long Term Arrangements Ensuring an uninterrupted sustainable supply of affordable quality products. UNICEF has been part of the SolarChill partnership and procured the first two SDD systems for testing in 2007. As of today, UNICEF has procured 1,841 SDD systems for 24 different countries. 2

Key Drivers of SDD adoption New vaccine introduction Innovation controlled environment, less recurrent cost implications and reduced maintenance needs Sustainability - Increased interest and demand for sustainable products move towards solar direct drive Emerging Market - Global Partner engagement 3

SD Cold Chain Support 26

Cold Chain Support offered to countries by Technical Support including Deployment Support - EVM assessments - Pre- and Post technical support - Needs assessment and guidance on equipment - Training in installation, use and preventive maintenance - Cold Chain Gap analysis targeting GAVI countries, - Solar system sizing tool enabling determination of the solar energy requirement by a refrigerator based on the insolation and ambient temperature. Post procurement follow up and monitoring - Follow up and support in installation and training in installation, use and preventive maintenance - Performance monitoring - Procurement process and establishments of Long Term Arrangements - Expediting and complaints handling 27

Sample of performance monitoring - Solar Direct Drive refrigeration systems The Tent. 1/3 Donation by the Suppliers of the complete range of PQS listed SDD system sized for Danish conditions: 7 SDD products - 3 technologies (ice banks, ice-lined and PCM) and 1 Battery power storage (BPS) system conventional solar 28

Sample of performance monitoring - Solar Direct Drive refrigeration systems. - 2/3 Purpose Monitor performance (Technical Unit) Get acquainted with new technologies (Innovation Team) Exhibit for visitors (MOHs, EPI/Supply/Program, CO and RO colleagues, Donors, Partners, Good will Ambassadors etc.) 29

Sample of performance monitoring - Solar Direct Drive refrigeration systems ytd. 3/3 Outcome - Enhanced procurement support pre- and post procurement. Hands on knowledge of equipment, installation and required maintenance with a better understanding of the systems, how they work, how they perform, and how they are set up. Strengthened and expanded technical expertise of the new technologies benefitting country programs Capacity Development Basis for system enhancement of each one of the exhibit products Individual supplier sessions on performance and observations made planned for Q4. 30

Almost 10 weeks of Remote Temperature monitoring Each unit was fitted with a cable sensor placed as near as possible to the center of the refrigeration compartment. In parallel, monitoring of the Ambient temperature in the tent. (Min/Max temperatures inside the tent +5.4ºC /37.5ºC. A drastic drop in temp. and Irradiation is expected soon, which will fall outside the working Ambient temperature for most units, (Between 5ºC and 43ºC). Monitoring will continue as long as the weather conditions allow. 31
