WARMUP Draw the Lewis dot diagram and determine the VSEPR shape for the following compounds. This is practice for the quiz. OF2 HBr SiO2

We will take a quiz over VSEPR and assemble a foldable. I will complete the VSEPR quiz and assemble a foldable. Success Criteria - Be able to draw the Lewis dot diagram for a compound. Be able to use that diagram to determine the molecular geometry. Complete assembly of foldable.

HOUSEKEEPING If you have not turned in the lab, you should turn it in now. My signature for building the molecules with the molecule kit is worth 6 points out of 30. That s 20%, the same amount that is taken off for being late. So if the only thing you have missing is my signature, then go ahead and turn it in. Remember that Thursday is the final day to take the midterm for those of you who were absent.

Agenda We will do a short review and then take the quiz. After the quiz, we will assemble and start filling in our nomenclature choose your own adventure book. For the quiz, I will write the names of the shapes on the board. The only other thing you will have is a laminated periodic table.

Please sign up for my REMIND if you have not already. If you have not already signed up for my REMIND, please do so now. The next slide shows the instructions.

OF2 HBr SiO2

NH4+ CO32- H3O+

Easy ways to figure out VSEPR from Lewis dot structure. Only 2 atoms - linear 2 atoms bonded to central atom with NO lone pairs - linear 2 atoms bonded to central atom WITH lone pairs - bent 3 atoms bonded to central atom with NO lone pairs - trigonal planar 3 atoms bonded to central atom WITH lone pairs - trigonal pyramidal 4 atoms bonded to central atom - tetrahedral

Kahoot We are going to play a kahoot on VSEPR. You will be provided with the Lewis dot structure and will need to determine the molecular geometry from that. No more than two people on each team. You must put both of your names in the team name. I cannot see the names of individual members below. Top 5 teams each get 5 points added to their quiz grade. If I can t tell who you are, then you don t get bonus points. If you don t have a phone, then find a partner who does. Go to kahoot.it

Time for the quiz! Clear off the table in front of you. If you want to move to the back to take the quiz, please raise your hand. I can move 8 people to the back of the room. One person per lab table and one person at the desk. I can also take one person at each of the side tables next to the counter. Phones should be turned off and put away. If I see your phone out at any point during the quiz, I will give you a zero on the quiz and turn your phone in to the office. You have twenty minutes for the quiz. After the quiz, we will start assembling our books. Get 4 sheets of paper, any color(s) you like.

Names for shapes: Linear Bent Trigonal planar Trigonal pyramidal Tetrahedral

Names for shapes: Linear Bent Trigonal planar Trigonal pyramidal Tetrahedral

Assembling our books Start off by making a pocket in your notebook just like the one we made for the periodic table. Do this on the first available page in your notebook. For those of you new to the class, do this with the 11th and 12th sheets of paper in your notebook.

Collect 4 sheets of paper, any color or combination of colors you would like. Fold your 4 sheets over and staple at the very top. I have only two staplers, so you will have to share. While you are waiting for everybody to catch up, write down these prefixes in your notebook.

Front cover title Nomenclature D204 First name Last name

After the cover, number the pages at the bottom right. There will be 7 pages.

This is what page 2 will look like when it is complete. We will start with the top of the page on the next slide and then do the bottom of the page.

-ide

This is what the completed page 5 will look like. We will work through the top part of the page on the next slide.

Practice! We are going to do a kahoot to practice going from formula to name. Get out your phone. Partner up with someone else if you don t have one.

Have a nice day!
