arxv:cod-mat/0006 v Dec 000 THE NTURE OF THE LON TIME DECY T SECOND ORDER TRNSITION POINT Moshe Schwartz School of Physcs ad stroomy Tel vv Uversty Tel vv, Ramat vv, Israel d S. F. Edwards Cavedsh Laboratory Maddgley Rd. CB3 OHE, Cambrdge, UK We show that at a secod order phase trasto, of 4 φ lke system, a ecessary codto for stretched expoetal decay of the tme depedet structure factor s obeyed. Usg the deas preseted ths proof a crude estmate of the decay of the structure factor s obtaed ad show to yeld stretched expoetal decay uder very reasoable codtos.
The decay of dsturbaces some physcal systems s kow to be a stretched expoetal tme. The caocal lst of those systems cludes glasses, -3 polymer solutos 4,5 ad such a form of decay s also characterstc of delectrc ad vscoelastc relaxato. 6,7 I recet work 8,9 we have show that ths form of decay s much wder spread tha expected. We clam, fact, that such a decay s preset may o-lear systems such as magets at ther crtcal pot, systems of the KPZ type etc. These systems share the property that a dsturbace of wave vector, µ decays at eulbrum wth a characterstc decay rate, ω, that s proportoal to wth µ >. Sce, the problems volved are very dffcult, the dervato has to rely o approxmatos. Therefore, t s very mportat to have some exact results that may also suggest a tutve uderstadg of the stretched expoetal decay. We start by gvg a exact proof that the codto for a slow form of decay s fulflled at the crtcal pot of a system of the φ 4 type. We cotue the, by employg the same basc deas, to argue that deed the decay s a stretched expoetal tme. The system we have md s a classcal φ 4 system at ts crtcal pot or ay geeralzato of t. We wll also assume that the classcal Hamltoa, W, that govers the statcs s eve the feld φ. It s well kow that Lagev dyamcs of the system leads to a Schroedger lke evoluto euato 0-3 ψ Hψ, () t where ψ s related to the probablty dstrbuto of obtag a gve feld cofgurato { φ } at tme t, P{ φ, t}, by P{ φ, t} exp[ W / ] ψ{ φ, t} ad where the "Hamltoa" H λ W W W { + } ( λ λ > 0) 4 () s Hermta, o egatve ad ts oly egefucto wth egevalue zero, s the groud state ψ Pe exp[ W / ]. I the followg we wll chose λ to be proportoal to θ wth θ that s ot too egatve. (The meag of the last phrase wll become clear later). Past studes of the dyamcs of the o θ 0 ad θ. 3-5 4 φ system cocetrated The persstece of a dsturbace of wave vector the ormalzed tme depedet structure factor at eulbrum s descrbed by
Φ ( < φ (0) φ( > α (, Φ (0) < φ (0) φ (0) > where the averages o the rght had sde of the above mea that φ s measured eulbrum at tme t 0 the the system s allowed to evolve freely ad φ s measured at tme t. Next, we express α (t ) terms of the egefuctos ad egevalues of the "Hamltoa" H. Sce H commutes wth the mometum operator, the egefuctos of H ca be chose also to be egefuctos of the mometum operator. Let ψ } be the set of ormalzed egefuctos of H, that {, are also egefuctos of the mometum operator wth egevalue. The correspodg set of egevalues of H s { λ }. We fd that α ( ( ψ, ( ψ, φ ψ, ), φ ψ λ t e ) (3) It s obvous that f the smallest egevalue the set { λ }, λ o, s really postve, α ( caot decay slower tha expoetal. Our frst goal s to show that to zero order Ω, the volume of the system, λo s deed zero at the crtcal pot. Cosder the set of uormalzed egefuctos of the mometum operator wth mometum, ( χ ;,..., ) Πφ ψ > ( ) (4) (To smplfy we restrct ourselves the followg to sets { } that do ot have a subset that sums up to zero. Ths restrcto ca be avoded a more detaled presetato). The expectato value of H, ( ) < χ( ;,..., ) H χ( ;,..., ) > µ (,,..., ), (5) < χ(,,..., ) χ (,,..., ) > s a exact upper boud o λ o by the varatoal theorem (appled to the sector of states wth mometum ). The expectato value µ ca be easly calculated, usg the detty ψ Λ HΛ ψ > < ψ [ Λ,[ H, Λ ]] ψ > (6) <
The result s ( ) λ ( ;,..., ) ( µ + O ) Φ (0) Ω, (7) so that the lmt of the fte system the sum o the rght had of the above yelds the exact result. Note, that although the fal result may seem to be the result of a aussa approxmato t s fact the full exact result. The o aussa correctos vash whe the volume of the system teds to fty. t the trasto (0) +η Φ s proportoal to, so that the term that s zero order Ω o the rght had sde of e.(7) has the form Γ ( ). It s straghtforward to show that K f Γ such a sum attas ts mmal value whe. The value of the sum at ( ) (+ θ ) + η + θ η the mmum s µ ( ) α. If θ s ot too egatve +θ η s postve ( ) ad µ ( ) teds to zero as teds to fty, for all. Ths mples at oce that λ s deed zero. What we have show s that the (postve) spectrum λ } s ot o boud from below by ay postve value. We have thus prove that the ecessary codto for the exstece of a stretched expoetal decay holds at the pot of trasto. We tur ow to obtag a crude estmate of α ( at log tmes, that s based o the smple deas that have already bee preseted above. We wll assume that the system has exctatos carryg mometum ad eergy ω z B ad that all the states of the system ca be approxmately descrbed as a collecto of such exctato, so that each state ca be tagged by the total umber of exctatos preset ad the "eergy" of a state carryg total mometum s gve approxmately by ( ) λ ( ;,..., ) ω (8) Ths assumpto s motvated by the form of the tral fuctos (e. 5) ad the correspodg dagoal elemets of the Hamltoa H, (e. 7). The decay fucto α ( s gve by { α ( Πd δ ( ) a (,..., ω t ) e (9),3 By the varatoal theorem t s obvous that z >, so that the mmal value of ( ) λ ( ;,..., ) s B z z ad ths value s attaed at the pot { / }. Cosder the uatty 3
t Π δ (0) (, d ( ) a (,..., ) e ω It s clear that the most domat cotrbuto to (, comes from the vcty of the pot { / }. Stadard asymptotcs yelds the large t behavour of (, t ) d z (, exp[ f ( ) ( ) ( ω ωt]. () I obtag the above we also reured that (, ( ω. The log tme behavour of α ( s ow determed by obtag the most domat ( ω from the euato ' d z f ( ) ( ω + ( z ) ω t 0 () The fucto f () s ot kow detal. We have good reaso, however, to beleve b d that exp[ f ( )] c [ ] ( wth d > 0) for large. The argumets for such a form are beyod the scope of ths paper, so we are gog to use the above form as a assumpto ad obta the resultg log tme behavour of α (. We wll the cosder how the behavour of α ( s chaged f we assume the less lkely a behavour of f (), f () for large wth a >. For the frst case we fd that to leadg order ω the domat cotrbuto comes from *, where t z * [ ωt], (up to a logarthmc factor ω (3) so that z θ α( ω [ ω t] exp[ γω t], ( θ b / z) (4) where aga we have eglected logarthmc factors that multply ω t, just for the sake of smplcty. The stretched expoetal form obtaed here s exactly the form we foud usg etrely dfferet methods. 8,9 a Now suppose f ( ) wth a >. Stll the stretched expoetal decay s recovered but wth a dfferet stretchg expoet α a θ ' a+ z ( ω [ ω t] exp[ γωt], (5) ' where θ s to be determed from fer detals of f (). We see that oly the lmt a we obta the expoetal behavour, that ca be show deed to be a exact lower boud o the decay. The cocluso s that eve f a >, as log as t s fte, the decay must be domated by a stretched expoetal fucto. 4
