Introduction The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), as the Secretariat of the UN Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM), and the National Administration of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation (NASG) of China, are jointly organizing an International Workshop on Legal and Policy Frameworks for Geospatial Information Management - Licensing of Geospatial Information from November 7-9, 2017 in Tianjin, China, which is also supported by the Regional Committee of United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management for Asia and the Pacific (UN-GGIM-AP). UN-GGIM, at its seventh session, called for development of mechanisms for Member States to build capacity to address the legal and policy matters that have an impact on the collection, dissemination and application of geospatial information. This is the first in a series of regional training events on Legal and Policy Frameworks for Geospatial Information Management planned by UNSD, the Secretariat of UN-GGIM. It aims to raise awareness, and introduce and educate participants on the concepts and practical approaches which the participants should find helpful in their normal work. This three-day UN-GGIM training event is expected to make both providers and consumers of geospatial information at the national and local levels better aware and informed on how a country s legal and policy framework impacts geospatial information management, improve Member States capacity in addressing legal and policy considerations in geospatial information management to improve data sharing and dissemination, and increase the availability, accessibility and application of geospatial information. Participants This International Workshop is a closed event. Participation is solely by invitation. Participants are expected to be Director-Generals or senior level officials from national geospatial information or national survey and mapping agencies that are working on improving the availability, accessibility and application of geospatial information nationally, to address legal and policy considerations, including in data sharing and dissemination, and issues related to the licensing of geospatial information.
