But Shu Fa s village needs water, so she breaks her promise. The angry spirit orders her to live in the river. 1 Listen to Literature Build Background and Vocabulary Key Concept Sometimes we make hard choices to help others. Key Words river secret village villager water waterfall Materials The Secret Water bottle of water chart paper to make the We Need Water cluster map that shows different waterways (optional) Key Words on index cards Teach WATER Display the bottle of water and explain: We all need water. Why? Use chart paper and make a cluster with students ideas: to drink We Need Water to grow food Then ask: Where do we find water in nature? Introduce river and waterfall and have students draw them. Then discuss and draw more waterways. If possible, locate examples on a map. VILLAGE AND VILLAGER Display pages 24 25 of The Secret Water and say: A village is a small town. 2 1 SECRETS Say: When something is secret, no one knows about it. When you have a secret, you usually don t tell it to other people. Have students remember a time when they had a secret. Ask: Did you keep the secret, or did you tell the secret to someone else? Check for Understanding Distribute the Key Word cards. Ask questions such as the following and have the student with the answer hold up the card: Which word means something no one else knows? (secret) Which word names a place to find water? (river, waterfall) Which word names a place where people live? (village) Preview the Story Introduce the Folk Tale CHARACTERS Have students open their books to pages 2 3. Point to the title and say: This story is called The Secret Water. Then use the bookmark to give an overview of the characters. Have students tell one thing about each character, such as: Shu Fa has dark hair. PREDICTION Read aloud the sentences and have students predict ways that Shu Fa can help her village get water. 2 Listen to Literature Preview Script Conduct a Picture Walk Use this script to help students access the overall idea of the story. Shu Fa lives with Uncle and Auntie. They live in a village by the mountain. The land is dry and dusty. There is no water near the village. Every day, the villagers walk over the mountain to get water. They fill their buckets. Then they carry the heavy buckets home. 4 Pages 4 5 It is hot (fan yourself) and dry. Shu Fa and her family (point) work under the sun. 5 6 Pages 6 7 There is no water near the village. The people walk far to get water (trace the route over the mountain). 7 We Need Water! I carry two buckets. You carry one. We need water. We work in the sun. I carry one bucket. You carry two. We cannot rest. We have work to do! One day, Shu Fa goes to get water. Along the way, she finds a turnip. It is perfect for lunch! She pulls the thick leaves. 8 9 Pages 8 9 Shu Fa and her friend sing this song. They carry buckets of water (point). The buckets look heavy! 10 Pages 10 13 One day, Shu Fa finds a turnip (point). When she pulls it, water comes out! 11 Suddenly, a strong wind blows. It pushes the turnip back into the hole. A loud voice says, Do not touch my water! Shu Fa runs home from the mountain. She wants to tell about the secret water, but she is afraid. Many days pass. Shu Fa watches the villagers. They work so hard to get water! Shu Fa worries about the village. She worries about Auntie and Uncle. Shu Fa s long, black hair turns white. Shu Fa asks, Who are you? I am the Voice of the Mountain. This is MY water. Tell no one about it! But we need water! Shu Fa cries. No! I do not share! the Voice says. Pages 14 15 The Voice of the Mountain is angry (scowl)! He tells Shu Fa she must keep the water a secret. 15 16 Pages 16 17 Shu Fa wants to tell about the water, but she is afraid. One day, Uncle trips and hurts his head. Cry for Water Poor old Auntie! She works under the sun. She cries for water, and She s not the only one. Aiya! he cries. Shu Fa cries, too. She must help her uncle. She must bring water closer to the village! Poor old Uncle! He works under the sun. He cries for water, and He s not the only one. 18 Pages 18 19 This is a song about Auntie and Uncle. They need water. 19 20 Pages 20 23 Uncle falls (point)! Shu Fa decides to help the village and smash the turnip. Now the village has a river! 21 Now there is a river. It is big! It is near! The people can get water. They shout, and they cheer. Now there is a river. It is wide! It is long! The people are not crying. They are happy and strong. Shu Fa watches the happy villagers. Suddenly, the Voice of the Mountain shouts, Shu Fa, you told my secret! Now you must live in my river forever. Shu Fa cries, Please let me say good-bye to my family! The Voice grumbles, Go. But be back here tonight. 24 25 Pages 24 25 This is another song. The villagers are happy about the river. 26 27 Pages 26 27 Oh, no! The Voice of the Mountain is angry! He wants Shu Fa to live in the river. What will she do? Shu Fa runs down the mountain. What can I do? she thinks. I do not want to live in the river! Shu Fa finds Uncle. She tells him the problem. I have a plan, Uncle says. That night, Shu Fa goes to the mountain. Uncle is there. This statue will trick the Voice of the Mountain, he says. I just need your hair. Uncle cuts Shu Fa s long, white hair. He puts it on the statue. Uncle puts the statue in the river. Water flows over the statue. The white hair forms a waterfall. The Voice of the Mountain says to the statue, Hello, Shu Fa! The trick worked! Uncle works all day. He carves a statue out of stone. 28 29 Pages 28 29 Shu Fa runs to Uncle. He has a plan (point to head). He makes a statue (point). 30 Pages 30 32 Uncle puts the statue in the river. It looks like Shu Fa. Sheltering Strategies Vocal intonation Illustrations Use a deep, angry voice for the Voice of the Mountain. Point to items in the art as you say their names: bucket, mountain, turnip, statue, etc. Pantomime Act out actions, such as carry (page 7), pull (page 11), and cut (page 30). Explanation Point to Shu Fa s hair on page 17. Say: Some people think that if you worry too much, your hair will turn white. Restatement After reading I have a plan (page 29), say: I know how to fix the problem. Real objects Definition Display a small statue (page 29). 2 Listen and Try Out Language Conduct an interactive reading of the folk tale. Pause after you read text containing subject pronouns and involve students in using the focus language structures. For example: Page 17: Say It as an Echo Emphasize Shu Fa as you read Shu Fa worries about the village. Have students echo you with the same emphasis. Then emphasize She as you read: She worries about Auntie and Uncle. Again, have students echo you. Page 23: Say the Rest of It Read the page aloud, emphasizing the subject in each sentence.
