Effects of Matter in Neutrino Oscillations and Determination of Neutrino Mass Hierarchy at Long-baseline Experiments T. Nosek Institute of Particle and Nuclear Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic arxiv:.93v3 [hep-ph 3 Jan 7 Abstract. Neutrino oscillations change when in media in comparison to vacuum oscillations due to the scattering of neutrinos on matter constituents, electrons particularly. This can be easily described by introducing new effective matter mixing angles and squared mass-splittings. Exploiting the matter effects and subsequent enhancement or suppression of oscillation probabilities can be used to determine the hierarchy of neutrino mass states. Recent long-baseline experiments NOνA and TK investigate this possibility. Together NOνA and TK combined can reject the wrong hierarchy for more than % of all possible values of yet unknown CP violating phase δ [ 8,8. Introduction Almost all of the neutrino oscillation parameters are already known with good precisions [5. Mixing angle θ =.38 ±.7 and squared mass-splitting m = 7.5 +.. ev are known from oscillations of solar neutrinos and experiment KamLAND (see e.g. [, ). The size of mixing angle θ 3.5 and the absolute value of the larger mass-splitting m = (. ±.) ev were measured in oscillations of atmospheric neutrinos and long-baseline experiments [,,. Reactor experiments Daya Bay [7, RENO [9 and Double Chooz [3 gave us the last mixing angle θ 3 =.±.. In standard 3ν-model of oscillations, there is few left to answer. Do oscillations violate CP symmetry, what is the size of δ phase? Is 3-mixing maximal, i.e. θ 3 = 5? If not, is it > or < 5? What is the mass hierarchy, i.e. what is the sign of m? Is there normal (NH; m > ) or inverted (IH; m < ) hierarchy? A simple way to resolve the last question and to determine the mass hierarchy is to take advantage of matter effects on neutrino oscillations and study their incidental modifications in comparison to vacuum oscillations. Recent long-baseline experiments NOνA and TK measure oscillation probabilities P(ν µ ν e ) and P( ν µ ν e ). The current status of oscillation parameters makes it possible for these experiments to address the problem of mass hierarchy. The text concerns itself with the basics of matter effects in 3ν-model of oscillations and the possibility of neutrino mass hierarchy determination ug ν µ ν e channel. The predicted sensitivities of NOνA and TK to determine the mass hierarchy are shown. CC Scattering of Neutrinos and Effective Neutrino Oscillation Parameters When propagating through media, neutrinos undergo weak interactions with other particles via exchange of W ± (CC) and Z gauge bosons (NC). Assuming that matter consists only of p, n and e, all neutrino flavors are treated as equal in NC interactions, while only ν e interacts with e through CC [8, 7. This intrinsic assymetry among the neutrino flavors in matter causes a distortion of vacuum oscillation patterns. The way to describe this is to introduce new effective matter oscillation parameters: θ ij Θ ij, m ij M ij [8. For the purpose of oscillations only interaction potential V corresponding to CC interactions can be added to the original vacuum Hamiltonian H to form new matter effective H. V = G F N e, with Fermi coupling constant G F and electron density N e. The potential for antineutrinos can be formally obtained as V V. Matter Hamiltonian H f in the basis
of neutrino flavors ν f (ν e,ν µ,ν τ ) T has a simple form H f = m E U a U + VE m, () where a m / m and U U 3 I δ U 3 U is standard mixing matrix for three neutrino flavors [ as a product of three matrices U ij U(θ ij ) of rotation in the space of neutrino mass eigenstates and the matrix I δ diag(,,exp(iδ)) containing CP phase δ, E is the energy of ν. Neutrino mixing is defined with respect to the eigenstates of the Hamiltonian. In vacuum, the eigenstates are standard mass eigenstates ν i connected with flavor states ν α via mixing matrix U. U is a transformation matrix between the bases of mass states ν m (ν,ν,ν 3 ) T and flavor states ν f through relation ν f = Uν m. In matter, there are new effective matter mass eigenstates N i with effective masses M i satisfying the eigenequation H N i = M i E N i. The new effective transformation matrix between bases ν f and N (N,N,N 3 ) T is U, i.e. ν f = UN and for Hamiltonian H m in basis N holds H f = UH m U. One can find U through diagonalization of H f and obtain new effective matter mixing angles Θ ij, and Mi, i.e. new effective squared-mass splittings M ij = M i Mj. One simple way is to employ the smallness of parameters a.3 and θ 3 and receive approximative matter parameters, for details see [8. Then U U 3 (θ 3 )I δ U 3 (Θ 3 )U (Θ ), where U ij are again matrices of rotation in corresponding planes by the set angles. Due to the primary approximation θ 3 can be taken as in vacuum. The other two angles are given by tanθ 3 = θ 3 cosθ 3 EV m ( a θ ) () and tanθ = aθ cos(θ 3 θ 3 ) a[cos θ θ cos (Θ 3 +θ 3 ) (Θ 3 +θ 3 ) EV m cos Θ 3. (3) Fig. shows Θ and Θ 3 with respect to VE in case of neutrinos/antineutrinos and NH/IH. Rather complicated formulae for M i are left out. Their dependence on VE is depicted in Fig.. Note, that only difference M ij has a physical meaning, the absolute value of M i has not. The oscillation probability in medium with constant and isotropic density such as in the case of long-baseline experiments has the same form as in vacuum [8. The elements of mixing matrix U αi and squared mass-splittings m ij has to be traded for new ones U αi and M ij, i.e. P(ν α ν β ;L,E) = 3 i= j= ( 3 Uαi U αj U βi U βj exp i M ij E L ), () where L is the oscillation baseline. Unlike in vacuum, the elements of effective mixing matrix in matter U αi are energy dependent and the oscillation length is changed thanks to M ij. Neutrino Mass Hierarchy Determination in ν µ ν e Channel According to Fig. neutrino mass hierarchy can be determined by locating 3-resonance, i.e. Θ 3. The promig way is to study the ν µ ν e appearance channel on the scale of L/E 5 km/gev and subsequent enhancement or suppression of oscillation probability due to the effective increase or decrease of Θ 3. This is being done by two recent longbaseline experiments NOνA and TK [ (range of their neutrino energy spectra with peaks

Unfortunately, it is difficult to reach the resonance itself in terrestrial conditions (higher energies and longer oscillation baselines are required). The relatively small matter effects provided by recent long-baseline experiments (V E values, i.e. neutrino energy spectra, for NOνA and TK can be seen in Fig. ) can be misidentified with uncertainties of some of the measured or unknown oscillation parameters, particularly θ 3, θ 3 and δ. P(ν α ν β ) depends mainly on θ 3, the octant of θ 3 (θ 3 > or < 5 ) and the (practically arbitrary) value of δ. Theθ 3 -andθ 3 -degeneracyofmasshierarchydeterminationatrecentlong-baselineexperiments are effectively eliminated with additional measurement of ν oscillations. On the contrary, δ-degeneracy is always inherent. Therefore, in order to resolve the question of mass hierarchy ug long-baseline experiments it is vital to measure both ν µ ν e and ν µ ν e oscillations. The possible arrangements allowed by the odds NH, IH, upper hyper-plane (UHP) δ [,8, lower hyper-plane (LHP) δ [ 8,, lower octant (LO) θ 3 <.5 and higher octant (HO) θ 3 >.5 are divided into two groups of favorable and unfavorable situations depending on the size of δ. Hierarchy cannot be determined by recent experiments (TK, NOνA) in unfavorable ones, i.e. NH-UHP-LO, NH-UHP-HO, IH-LHP-LO and IH-LHP- HP. Favorable ones are NH-LHP-HO, NH-LHP-LO, IH-UHP-HO and IH-UHP-LO. In extremely favorable conditions (δ 9, 9 ) and NH-LHP-HO or IH-UHP-LO hierarchy can be determined even from ν oscillations only, in case of NH-LHP-NO or IH-UHP-HO even from ν oscillations [. Neutrino Mass Hierarchy Determination at NOνA and TK NOνA and TK are both long-baseline oscillation experiments standing off-axis of their neutrino beams to tune the desired energy of ν and make their spectra much sharper with narrow width [. They study ν µ disappearance and ν e appearance in ν µ beams created in accelerator facilities of Fermilab (NOνA) and J-PARC (TK), which can be switched to ν mode to investigate ν µ ν e oscillations. Oscillation baseline is 8 km and ν energy ca GeV in case of NOνA and 95 km and ca. GeV in case of TK. NOνA is planned to run for years, 3 in each of ν, ν modes and it started taking data in early. The first analysis of ν e appearance has been already published [5. TK began in 9 with ν mode and ν run started in 5 with a plan of at least years of ν and years of ν. Fig. 3 shows the dependence of P(ν µ ν e ) on E at NOνA, δ-degeneracy region commented earlier is clearly visible.

years of ν data can be divided into.5 of ν and.5 of ν. The total sensitivity for NOνA only and combined with TK after and 8 years of running respectively is in Fig. 5. The favorable and unfavorable scenarios of hierarchy and δ can be very easily recognized. The wrong neutrino mass hierachy is rejected at 9% C.L. by recent long-baseline experiments for ca % of the possible values of δ [ 8,8. Conclusion The effects of matter in neutrino oscillations ug effective matter parameters approach were described. The way to determine neutrino mass hierarchy in ν µ ν e channel at recent long-baseline experiments was discussed. In order to resolve neutrino mass hierarchy problem both data on ν and ν oscillations are needed because of inherent parameters correlations, θ 3 and θ 3 in particular. According to the analyzed sensitivity studies NOνA and TK can reject the wrong hierarchy at 9% C.L. for more than % of the whole interval of possible δ [ 8,8. Acknowledgments.
