Forces and Motion
What s in the bag? One person, WITHOUT LOOKING see if you can describe what s inside.
What sticks and why? Does all metal stick to a magnet? What does? What doesn t?
Polarity Magnets have poles. There is a north pole and a south pole (kinda like the earth!) In this case a magnet has two sides. The north only attracts the south, and the south only attracts the north.two south sides or two north sides repel each other!
We know force now what about motion? If force is the push or pull on an object can you make an object, maybe a magnet, move using another magnet? What would that look like?
Breaking the Force - Ask If you put a plastic spacer in between the magnets, would they still stick to each other? (remember what you learned about a force field.)
Breaking the Force - Imagine How can the strength of the force between two objects be measured? From earlier observation, we thought that the force of attraction didn t work if the magnets were too far apart. How could we be sure that observation is correct?
Breaking the Force - Plan If they do stick, you think the space between them would affect the strength of the force? Time to find out! Let s set up a graph to record data as you measure force.
Breaking the Force - Create Time to test it out! Measure the force (in how many tiles it takes to break the force field) with no spacers, 1 spacer, 2 spacers,
Activities Here are some links to practice what you know about magnets! Spin the pieces so north and south touch to connect them. Try to match three of the same color. http://www.coolmath-games.com/0-magnets Here s a whole bunch of activities on one page! http://interactivesites.weebly.com/magnets-and-compass.html Be a magnet detective! http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/gamesactivities/detectivescience/magnets.html Magnet Hunt https://www.brainpop.com/games/magnethunt/
Breaking the Force - Improve What did you find out? What could you change next time to get better results?
A Sticky Situation 1. Stuck-Up Balloon Blow up a balloon and tie the end so that the balloon stays inflated. Hold the balloon against the wall and see if it will stick. What happens? Briskly rub the balloon across a piece of fur or wool or (Mr. Lurie will put up a cloth). For wool, you can use a sweater, sock, scarf, or rug. Does the balloon stay? Can you explain what happened?
A Sticky Situation 2. Dancing Paper Tear a sheet of paper into small pieces about the size of the fingernail on your pinky. Place the pieces of paper on the table. Charge a balloon as in part 1. Bring the charged balloon near the pieces of paper. What happens?
A Sticky Situation Why happened to the balloon and the paper? Did it attract because of magnetism? If it wasn t magnetism, was it still a force? What kind of force? https://www.brainpop.com/science/energy/staticelectricity/
Build a Circuit Build a Circuit 9/22 Give your page a title and date Draw a diagram of what you come up with
Build a Circuit Build a Circuit 9/26 Today I d like you to use a circuit board, and a battery, to make a motor run.
Build a Circuit Build a Circuit 9/26 Now think about when you made a circuit at the carpet by holding hands. You were able to open and close the circuit. Can you do that with the extra materials (a wire and a switch) added to your circuit board? Draw a diagram of what you come up with
Two Kinds of Circuits Two Kinds of Circuits 9/27 There are two kinds of circuits: A Series Circuit A Parallel Circuit
Two Kinds of Circuits There are two kinds of circuits: A Series Circuit is arranged in a chain, so the current has only one path to take. A Parallel Circuit has two or more paths for current to flow through. Two Kinds of Circuits 9/27 A Series Circuit is arranged in a chain, so the current has only one path to take. A Parallel Circuit has two or more paths for current to flow through. What are the advantages of one or the other?
Making a Magnet Turn On or Off Here s a picture of an magnet on a crane at a junkyard that can be turned on and off. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbw y9gzggd4 Can you make your own magnet that turns on and off?
Making a Magnet Turn On or Off When opposites attract in a magnet it creates a magnetic field. When opposites attract in an electric current...
Making a Magnet Turn On or Off When you run an electric current through a wire it creates a magnetic field around the wire. Can you use this knowledge to create a magnet that you can turn on and off.
