Culling And The Order of Nine Angles "To aspire to to gain Mastery of The Dark Arts is to experience, and to learn the lessons of self-honesty and self-control; to strive, to dream, to quest, to exceed expectations. To move easily, gracefully, from the Light to the Dark, from Dark to Light, until one exists between yet beyond both, treating them (and yourself) for the imposters they (and you) are." Anton Long, 2008 A Heretical Satanism One of the most controversial aspects of the Order of Nine Angles (O9A/ONA) is their advocacy of culling; that is, of human sacrifice. For they have since their foundation in the early 1970s maintained that not only is such culling a natural and necessary part of what they termed their 'traditional satanism' {1} but also that the victims (the opfers) are selected according to certain satanic guidelines, and which guidelines they have published {2} together with various Occult rituals - such as The Ceremony of Recalling {3} - during which a sacrifice takes place. In addition, the O9A have made undertaking a culling an integral part of their unique occult praxis, the Seven Fold Way {4}, stating that such an act is a necessary requirement and a necessary test of the commitment of the initiate to their form of satanism. That is, a necessary 'rite of passage' and a necessary learning experience. They also maintain that by advocating such things as culling, by inciting the commission of 'criminal acts' and the practical involvement of initiates with political and/or religious extremism - via such things as Insight Roles {5} - they are 'presencing', manifesting, the essence of satanism, with Anton Long, the founder of the O9A, writing {6} that the Order of Nine Angles is: "the only avowedly Satanic association which is: (a) practising or disposed to practise evil; (b) actually or potentially harmful, destructive, disastrous, pernicious; baleful; (c) malicious; mischievous, sly; (d) bad in moral character, disposition; (e) hard, difficult, misleading, deadly, amoral; (f) malevolent, offensive." In the same essay he also wrote that "in comparison to all other modern self-professed Satanist groups, and in contrast to those individuals who publicly profess or have professed (in the last sixty years or so) to being Satanists, the Order of Nine Angles is, and always have been, different and, from the viewpoint of these other Satanists, a Satanic heresy."
The Irresponsible O9A From the 1980s until fairly recently, self-professed modern satanists and modern self-professed satanist groups - such as the Church of Satan and the Temple of Set - condemned the O9A for its advocacy of culling, predictably accusing the O9A of "macho posturing" {7}, of "a misguided effort to generate controversy", and maintaining that human sacrifice is not part of satanism, with Aquino writing (in a letter to Anton Long dated October 7, XXV) that "the publication of a Satanic ritual by an avowedly Satanic institution which includes human sacrifice is thoroughly irresponsible" {8}. In other words, self-professed modern satanists and modern self-professed satanist groups repeatedly and for decades committed the logical fallacy of ignoratio elenchi, diverting attention away from the central issues illuminated by, and implicit in, the O9A's advocacy of human sacrifice. Which issues are the philosophical, ethical, and esoteric, foundations of modern satanism. Issues which the O9A made abundantly clear in texts such as (i) Concerning Culling as Art {9} where the aristocratic ethos - the basis for culling, and for the O9A - is outlined, in (ii) Satanism Plebeianized {10}, and in (iii) The Gentleman s and Noble Ladies Brief Guide to The Dark Arts {11}, and foundations made abundantly clear in the logos of the Order of Nine Angles, otherwise known as the code of kindred-honour since that code makes a distinction between (a) those with a 'satanic physis' - a satanic nature - who uphold the tribal ethic of kindred honour, and (b) 'the mundanes'. Thus, the code allows for and encourages the removal of those mundanes deemed suitable according to the O9A's guidelines for selecting opfers. However, fairly recently, some self-professed modern satanists - unaffiliated with existing satanic groups, including the O9A, but undoubtedly influenced by the O9A's consistent and long-term advocacy of culling - have begun to question the 'party line' of groups such as Church of Satan and the Temple of Set in respect of culling, with a few self-professed modern satanists affirming the necessity, and the natural justice, of removing detrimental human beings. An O9A ethos which the O9A overtly expressed in its text Concerning Culling as Art where they state that: "Ancestral cultures teach us that our well-being and our evolution, as humans, is linked to if not dependant upon individuals of noble instincts, of proven noble character, and thence to dealing with, and if necessary removing, individuals of rotten character. Hence, that a type of natural culling was desirable the rotten were removed when they proved troublesome or became a bad influence, and were seen for what they were: rotten. The rise of the plebeian of the mundanes is the development of ideas, dogma, and abstractions and using these manufactured lifeless things as guides and examples in place of
individuals of proven noble character." Which O9A ethos is naturally presenced by the O9A's tribal ethic of kindred honour, by its opposition to Magian abstractions {12}, and by its long-term aim of changing, evolving, human beings by esoteric means, including by its hermetic Seven Fold Way {4}. As Anton Long wrote in a much neglected essay: "In the esoteric sense, [the] esoteric change of individuals is the essence of the ONA, past, present and future, and this change is beyond, and irrespective of, whatever exoteric form and/or exoteric praxis is used by the individual or by one of us guiding or developing someone to become one of us. Importantly, it is from this individual change that outer exoteric supra- personal (Aeonic) change slowly (as measured by causal Time) proceeds. Not the other way around. That is, destroying and replacing The System, and the building of a New Aeon, is or can be one effect of our affective (esoteric) existence. One effect of a diversity of individuals undergoing an inner esoteric (alchemical) change and evolution whatever praxis is used, from that of a Rounwytha (Rachael in Breaking The Silence Down), to that of overt Satanism (Melanie in The Temple of Satan), to that of a primal paganism (Lianna in The Giving), to no outwardly esoteric form at all (Edmund and Fiona in The Greyling Owl). Thus, the real esoteric aim correctly understood is not some grandiose revolutionary plan or plans, not some aristocratic society, or whatever. Those are only some possibly exoteric effects of some of those individuals involved with or inspired by or changed by us. Or expressed another way they are but practical exoteric aims/modes of incitement/means of manipulation which can and which may inspire/incite some individuals to Presence The Dark (and which may thus provide them with pathei-mathos) and thus aid The Sinister Dialectic. As such, they are basic but necessary and useful causal adversarial forms. A key to understanding here are the terms useful and forms. The actual form or methods used are irrelevant what works, works; for individuals and Aeonically. They are irrelevant for basically four reasons: (1) because it is for each individual to make their own choice of methods and/or forms to use based on their understanding and on their character; (2) because we do not, being amoral, assign any ethical value to any causal form, praxis, or method; (3) because even if some method or form or praxis does not seem to causally achieve what someone desires or believes it can, it can/could provide them with pathei-mathos and thus contribute to their continuing personal esoteric change/development; and (4) because such forms, methods and praxis are useful in testing/manipulating those not of us (mundanes) and can present them with opportunities
to change and evolve themselves (and so cease to be mundanes) or be the genesis of their failure. Which leads us on to the ONA as an Order: as a causal ordering/presencing; as a society, as an esoteric association, of similar individuals pursuing, over durations of causal Time, similar interests and goals, esoteric and otherwise, and who all (whether or not they are aware of it to begin with) are part of a particular and a living esoteric tradition." {13} Conclusion That the raison d'etre of the O9A's advocacy of human culling has been mis-understood and misrepresented within the satanic community is quite understandable, given the plebeian nature of the modern satanism derived from the dehortations of LaVey, Aquino, and others. It is no surprise, therefore, that to date no self-professed modern satanists - affiliated or unaffiliated with existing satanic groups - have examined in an intellectual way the philosophical, ethical, and esoteric, basis of the O9A's advocacy, serving as that advocacy does to distinguish, and make unique, the satanism, the esoteric philosophy {14}, and the hermetic anados, of the O9A, and manifest as that anados is in their esoterically complex sinisterly-numinous Seven Fold Way with its principle of pathei-mathos and its tribe code of kindred-honour {15}. It is also no surprise that no academic has so far undertaken a detailed scholarly analysis of O9A esotericism and the place of culling in that esotericism. No surprise, given that their focus hitherto seems to have been upon the likes of Crowley and upon the modern satanism derived from the dehortations of LaVey, Aquino, with the majority of such academics apparently accepting, and seemingly without question, what latter-day satanists have said and written, in their ignorance, about the O9A. However, as Professor Monette correctly surmised: " [The Order of Nine Angles] is not a structured lodge or temple, but rather a movement, a subculture or perhaps metaculture that its adherents choose to embody or identify with." {16} In other words, the O9A is a living, evolving, unique, esoteric tradition.
