Prouction of pions, kaons an protons in Xe Xe collisions at s =. ev arxiv:09.0v [hep-ex] Sep 0, for the ALICE Collaboration Università i Bologna an INFN (Bologna) E-mail: simone.ragoni@cern.ch In late 0, the ALICE experiment recore a ata sample of Xe Xe collisions at the unpreceente energy in A A systems of s =. ev. he p spectra at mi-rapiity ( y < 0.) of pions, kaons an protons are presente. he preliminary p spectra are obtaine by combining inepenent analyses with the Inner racking System (IS), the ime Projection Chamber (PC), an the ime-of-flight (OF) etectors. his paper focuses on the etails of the analysis performe with OF an in particular on the performance implications of the special Xe Xe run conitions. he peculiarity of this ata set comes from the experimental conitions: because of the lower magnetic fiel of the ALICE solenoi (B = 0., lower than the nominal 0. ) we expect to explore a p region unattainable before. A comparison between the yiels at ifferent centrality bins will also be provie. Prouction of pions, kaons an protons in Xe Xe at s =. ev. Introuction he ALICE Collaboration has built a eicate heavy-ion collisions etector to investigate a new state of matter, the QGP (Quark Gluon Plasma), which is expecte to be create in these collisions. One way to quantify the expansion velocity of the system prouce in heavy-ion collisions is to stuy the prouction of ientifie particles, particularly their transverse momentum istributions. he final-state istributions are governe by the temperature at which the system freezes out an the particles no longer interact. If the values of the temperature agree for ifferent particle species, e.g. pions, kaons, protons, an antiprotons, this inicates a global freeze-out temperature an flui velocity. While the low-p en of the spectrum involves particles which are more likely to be in thermal equilibrium, the high-p particles are more likely to have been prouce in har scatterings, governe by perturbative QCD. Ultimately, this stuy aresses the question whether the matter reaches kinetic equilibrium. If we suppose that the system create in heavy-ion collisions is in kinetic equilibrium, the pressure is built insie the system. he matter is surroune by vacuum, so a pressure graient in outwar irections generates collective flow an, in turn, the system expans raially. When the matter is moving at a finite velocity the momentum istribution is Lorentz booste an the magnitue of this boost is proportional to the particle mass. If this kin of effect in the momentum istribution can be observe experimentally, one can obtain some information about kinetic equilibrium. Assuming each flui element expans raially at a raial flow velocity β, the p spectra for pions an protons can be calculate by convoluting these affecte momentum istributions over the azimuthal irection, which is realize in the blast wave moel [, ].. Analysis proceure he measurement of the prouction of π ±, K ±, p an p in Xe Xe collisions at s =. ev has been performe for IS, PC an OF [] separately, but in the following we will focus on the OF analysis only. he final goal is the combination of all iniviual analyses so as to provie a single spectrum covering the wiest p interval possible with the best precision, combine results are shown in Sec.. he final spectra represent the combination of the three iniviual analyses. he p -ranges of the ifferent analyses are given in ab.. Prouction of pions, kaons an protons in Xe Xe at s =. ev. OF analysis he analysis relies on the global tracks an the extraction of the total yiel by performing particle ientification (PID) exclusively with the OF etector. he main goal of this analysis is to provie spectra as a function of p for ientifie π +, π, K+, K, p an p at intermeiate p, which are then combine with the IS an PC spectra. he strategy, as it will be better explaine in the following, is base on the comparison between the measure time of flight an the theoretical preiction for each mass hypothesis. he analysis strategy mainly relies on tracks reconstructe in the PC, which are extrapolate to the OF. he assignment of a OF cluster to the propagate track allows one to use the precise measurement of the arrival time of the particle at the OF surface. Examples of the measure particle velocity can be seen in Fig. a for Xe Xe collisions. (b) OF signal: single template components. (a) Beta vs p measure with the OF etector. Figure : Left panel: beta measure with the OF etector as a function of the track momentum in Xe Xe collisions at s =. ev. he visible bans are from e, µ, π, K, p an. he contribution from wrongly associate tracks can be seen outsie the bans. Right panel: the OF signal fit with single template components. he mismatch is epicte with a ark blue color, pions with magenta, kaons with light blue an protons with green. he ientification of ifferent particle types is performe with a statistical approach, measuring the time-of-flight as time-o f - f light = OF 0. (.) he time of flight is efine as the ifference between the time measure by the OF etector an the start time 0. For simplicity from now on we will refer to the time-o f - f light as t. he expecte time-of-flight (texp,i ) can be numerically compute for every particle species i for each track by taking into account the track length an the energy loss in the material. he PID strategy with OF takes avantage of the separation between the ifferent particles by calculating the nσ separation t texp,i nσi =, (.) σi inicating by nσi the istance in number of sigmas of the measure value from the expecte one uner a specific mass hypothesis, an by σi the uncertainty on the numerator. he uncertainty σi
Prouction of pions, kaons an protons in Xe Xe at s =. ev can be expresse as σi = σof + σ 0 + σt exp which are the intrinsic contribution ue to the OF itself, the resolution of the start time of the event, an the contribution ue to the expecte time of flight for a certain particle species, respectively. he 0 can be etermine with ifferent methos [], each with ifferent precision. he measurement of the 0 with the OF is fully efficient in Xe Xe collisions from central collisions up to centrality bin 0 90%, where the multiplicity of tracks reaching the OF is not high enough to ensure the etermination of the event time in each collision. In this case, the measurement of the start time relies mostly on the 0 etector or, in case it is not available, on the nominal bunch crossing time, which results in a worse time-of-flight resolution.. OF signal he signal in the OF etector must be correctly parametrize to perform the particle ientification. he parameterization is given by A Gaus(t, µ,σ), if t µ + τ. f (t) = [ A Gaus(µ + τ, µ,σ) exp τ (t µ τ) (.) ], otherwise. σ where A is a normalization factor. Basically the actual form of f (t) is a Gaussian istribution with an exponential tail on the right sie of the peak, see Fig. a. he parameters are tune on experimental ata an are set to µ = 0 an τ = 0.σ. hese parameters are intrinsic to the OF etector an are to be taken as asymptotic values that are measure once the particle momentum is high enough that the energy loss becomes negligible. he parameters use to escribe the OF signal are extracte with a fit to the istribution of t t exp,π t 0 in the region where the peak for π is clearly separate in OF. he raw spectra extracte in this way have to be correcte for the presence of seconary particles, for the tracking efficiency, an the matching efficiency (see Fig. b), before they can unergo combinations with spectra from IS an PC.. Results he combine spectra are shown on Fig. a, b, an c. It is evient that they show all the features expecte from raial flow: the spectra get harer with increasing mass of the particle of interest, e.g. going from pions to protons, an the spectra get harer with increasing centrality (most evient for the proton spectra). he p spectra here shown, may be then fitte with a Blast- Wave parameterization, in orer to extract the kinetic freeze-out temperature an the raial flow velocity. Subsequently, the values obtaine for Xe Xe collisions, may be compare with those obtaine for Pb Pb collisions at s =.,.0 ev. References [] P.J. Siemens an J.O. Rasmussen: Phys. Rev. Lett., 0 (99),.
