GIS- April 2016 That s Why We Did That! A MicroStation to ArcGIS Conversion Story Michael Herrmann (mherrmann1@ncdot.gov)
NC : County Road and Bridge Maps 3 Lenoir County Bridge Map
Back In the Old Days. Beaufort County, Circa 1950 4
NC : County Road Maps New Hanover County 2000 Digitized in the early 1990 s and stylized to mimic the paper maps Digital conversion improved the capacity to increase map content, update frequency, and distribution options Institutionalized Product: Staff have grown accustomed to the look of the product and it is widely used. Incorporated into other guides and reference documents 5
WHY? 6
County Road Map Conversion: Why? Departmental Alignment Data Ownership Enhanced Content Product Demand Geospatial Analysis
County Road and Bridge Map Conversion: How? Scoping Process Product Evaluation Data Evaluation Training Needs Quality Assurance 8
County Road Map Conversion: Technical Process Develop Schema Template Creation Import Data Data Review 9
County Road Map Conversion: How? County map styled to resemble the MicroStation product MXD s organized by County. Data organized by Division Production MXDs separated from Editing MXDs. Standardized layer names and network locations were critical Cabarrus County Editing MXD 10

County Road and Bridge Map Conversion What have we created? 15
County Road Map Conversion Production MXDs to manage 377 MXDs 1243 Data Frames 96,979 GIS layers Editing Maps 115 Editing maps 32,029 GIS layers Focusing Display and Content Masking/Queries Insets and visual representation Symbols 16
County Road Map Conversion: Maintenance Quarterly updates to map layers Change detection and map maintenance aided by Python. Standardized filenames, network locations, and layouts Map Production Tools Continued effort to transition content from internal to external data layers 17
County Bridge Map Conversion Durham County Bridge 2015 Base Map MXD 18
Curb and Gutter Project: ADA Assessment Request for materials to support materials County Maps Adopted in the assessment Python used to add and symbolize data on product Production tools streamlined the printing process Existing Curb/Gutter Buncombe County 2015 ADA Base Map MXD 19
Rails and Rail Crossings Customize product to include things like rail crossings Shift our internal rail data to external sources Annotation placement is the most resource intensive aspect of the process Carteret County Bridge Map with Rail Crossings Downtown Morehead City Inset 20
Other Benefits Geographic and Attribute Data have added dimensions to digital products PDF has layers that whose visibility can be changed and attributes which can be examined. Geo-Enabled PDF allows for use of locational functions on mobile devices with 3 rd party apps (e.g., Avenza s PDF Maps) Staff has elevated expertise in GIS and their repertoire of geospatial products 21
Summary County Map Product is an institutional asset management tool Transition from MicroStation required time, technical assistance and training Programming tools necessary to work with the multitude of MXDs, geodatabases, and GIS files. GIS product has been adaptable to meeting unforeseen needs 22
